Staffordshire Tea Bowl & Saucer Rags to Riches Child Lessons Ridgway 1840 Maroon
Rare Maroon Staffordshire Pearlware Tea Bowl& Saucer SOUVENIR ~ LEARNING LESSONS William Ridgway ~ Staffordshire England c. 1835 This elegant transfer printed handleless cup or tea bowl and saucer dates to circa 1835-1840. The deep bowl stands 2 3/8” in diameter across the top rim. Standing on a pedestal base. The saucer measures 6” in diameter. Extremely well potted, bordered with rose and floral sprays encircling a Romantic genre scene depicting two pairs of children sitting on a plinth beneath a big urn of flowers. One little girl is reading from a book and the boy sitting beside her is studying a world globe. The other children are dressed in rags; the boy is resting his head on his hand while the girl clutches his arm. The metaphorical design is a fantastic illustration of the Rags to Riches story, capturing the moral importance ... moreof learning lessons and education to avoid poverty and ignorance. Transfer printed in a deep maroon or burgundy wine(sometimes called mulberry purple maron or red) finished with pearlware glaze. The saucer is marked with the pattern name SOUVENIR in the backstamp of William Ridgway in the Staffordshire region of England. The cup and saucer are both in very good condition with old chipping of the foot rim of the cup. A fleabite on the foot of the saucer and no other chips, cracks, or repairs. Typical minor transfer imperfections ponding of pearlware glaze and stilt marks from the making process. Slight mellowing of color consistent with age and prior use. Offered as is, a nice example of an early sipping cup and bowl, and a nice companion or backdrop for childrens wares. We have also listed other early colorful transferware this week to mix and match. Early Pearlware Child Miniature Tea Set Sugar COUNTRY LIFE Staffordshire 1830
English Pearlware Childs Miniature Sugar Pot COUNTRY LIFE Staffordshire or Swansea England c. 1830 This miniature sucrier or sugar was originally part of an early English child's or doll’s toy tea set. The little doll house pitcher measures 4" long and stands 2 1/4" tall on four raised bun feet with moulded handles. The lid has gone missing. The little pot is finely potted. Transfer printed in black on earthenware finished with pearlware glaze and hand painted outlining along the rims. Decorated with two'genre' scenes of country life: one pictures a boy tending his sheep while relaxing beneath a tree with his god. The other shows a girl carrying a flower basket. A beautiful English village is seen in the background. Exquisite naive folk art imagery in a beautiful example of early 19th century miniature transferware. ... moreTypically this sugar is unmarked. Based on form and handle. The maker was possibly Godwin or Hackwood in Staffordshire. Wares from Swansea used similar transfers but with a different form. One of the earliest wares intended for children to play with, used to instruct them in proper table manners or for a playtime tea party or simply to decorate a dollhouse table. The sugar in very good condition with no chips cracks or repairs. The sugar has no lid. Discoloration on base consistent with prior use. Offered as is. A striking example of early miniature antique ceramics. Child Teapot PUNCH & JUDY Ragbaby Wizard Allerton Staffordshire 1890 Blue Green
800x600 Staffordshire Childs Teapot PUNCH& JUDY Charles Allerton& Sons Staffordshire England c 1890 This is an early child's transferware toy teapot. Circa 1890. Originally part of a complete children's miniature tea set, the teapot is round, melon shaped and stands about 5 1/2" tall to the top of the fancy finial with a scalloped rim and applied handle. The color is a brilliant marine blue green. The teapot features the fabulous characters from the Punchinella puppet show(dating back to Italy in the early 17th century) of Punch. Judy and baby, along with a fanciful pipe-smoking frog. The images is repeated on each side of the pot. These fanciful characters are surrounded by an aesthetic display of flowers and geometrical whimsies. The handles and lid have geometric-floral border trims. The pattern name is"Punch" ... moreIt was made by Charles Allerton& Sons. A pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire region of England who was well known for his whimsical children's tea sets. The teapot is fainly marked with Allerton registration mark. This teapot is in overall very good condition. Flea bite nibbles on edge. Firing separation inside spout, interior line inside bottom, no other chips cracks or repairs. The workmanship is haphazard. Which is one of the reasons many people collect it.not fine china, and not meant to be; it was made for children and probably considered disposable. The transfers are not all aligned neatly, and there is runny glaze and little bumps and dips and transfer wrinkles and glazed over edge crizzling original to the making. The naïve and hasty style adds to the folksy charm. Sold as is. Antique English transferware in the Punch and Judy pattern is quite scarce and highly sought after. And is getting harder to find, particularly in this great shade of blue green. This amusing teapot will make a wonderful addition to your collection of children's dishes or any collection of Punch and Judy, jester, puppetry or magical memorabilia. Please send us a note wit
