Demilune bas d' armoire in ... morethe French Louis XVI style has a warm, reddish brown patina, and is crafted from mahogany with rosewood or kingwood. Its clean lines will compliment a wide variety of decors, including neoclassical, English Georgian and French empire. It features a rouge marble top, crosshatch parquetry inlay, and neoclassical gilt bronze mounts including lion and goddess masks, rosettes, reed-and-tie molding, and shell and scrolling foliate motifs. It measures 46" wide, 50.25" tall and 18" deep. Interior measures 40.5" wide and 30" high, and is fitted with notched sides to accomodate two, original adjustable shelves. This cabinet dates from circa 1900. The rear panel is pierced with a handful of holes created to accomodate television and stereo cords. Each panel has a handful or more noticeable scuffs and chips to the parquetry, and the side panels appear to have been relacquered because these damages are not noticeable by touch. Each center door has a single stress crack. There are other minor chips here and there, and the gilt bronze molding on the left corner has separated from the frame. Dimensions: 75 3/8 inches high(34 3/8 inches high to marble top) 47.25 inches wide/ long and 23 1/8 inches deep. Condition: This piece is an antique and has the usual wear associated with its age. There are areas of missing and damaged veneer on the base. The drawer pulls are not original. And the drawer locks have been removed. One of the pads(back left) the base rests on is missing. The spindle detail on the left side of the base under the marble is missing. There is some silver loss to the mirrors. A related example attributed to Phyfe is illustrated in Duncan Phyfe: Master Cabinetmaker in New York. Peter Kenny. Another example with wooden backplash, which is much larger and not half the example this is, is illustrated in 19th Century America: Furniture and Other Decorative Arts, Berry B. Tracey. This piece is in impeccable condition with all original marble, ... moreand no breaks. Of special desirability is its small size(59 in. Of interest is that it has raised panels on all sides. Back included. We have wondered about this, and it is clear from a comparison of the central veneer of each panel that this was the way it was originally built, as 6 out of 8 of the panels are similar enough in figure to show that they are all cross sections of the same tree, and the other two panels(used on the fronts of both cabinets) are somewhat more vibrant selections that also match each other perfectly, suggesting that they were chosen from the most desirable area of the same original board. Basically, each of the side cabinets was benchmade by a craftsman who most likely had a regular custom of constructing raised panels on all sides, exhibiting a statement of great cabinetwork. Therefore, although the back is unlikely to be seen while in use, paneling it was a point of pride for the maker. There are no repairs or alterations. We have French polished the entire piece and it is a standout. The veneers are the best of figured mahogany with glowing, contrasting amber tones. This is in every way a museum piece.
