ANTIQUE 1884-1917 RUSSIAN KORNILOFF BROTHERS PORCELAIN PLATE-NOT MADE FOR EXPORT
This Korniloff plate in great condition. The porcelain is very white and has a lovely"ring" to it when pinged. It measures 9 1/2" 24.2 cm) in diameter and 1 3/4" 4.5 cm) high(or deep) This plate is thicker than most European porcelain plates and is quite heavy. The marks on the back dates a plate to some time between 1884 and 1917. The mark in Russian translates: St. Petersburg. Korniloff Brothers" In 1886 they began exporting to Paris, London and America. They always marked their export wares with"Made in Russia" underneath their mark. The importer in the United States was Tiffany's, New York and the plates were marked as such. This plate was not made for export, as I know of its provenance. In the 1980s a close friend mine gave this plate to me. It had belonged to her grandmother who was Russian and ... moreimmigrated to America in the very early 1900s. She was a young woman then and left Russia with very few possessions, one of them was this plate. I have only seen this pattern once and it was on a pitcher with the famous Russian soldiers portrait. The Korniloff factory was also the purveyors For the Imperial Court in 1842. The factory closed in 1918, I assume as a result of the Russian Revolution, with the"state" taking over all private factories. My friend confided in me that her grandmother was very proud of this plate and never used it for anything other than decoration. This explains the plates great condition. Listed for your consideration is an exquisite little Russian Gardner porcelain cabinet plate or bowl. The plate is 4-1/4" 11 cm) in diameter. It stands 1-1/4 inches(3 cm) high. It depicts a scene of aristocratic. If not royal, 18th century courtship, or courtly love. The wide, rainbow-hued rims of the plates have a delicate lustre glaze, irridescent, or pearlescent, imitating mother-of-pearl. The pictures don't do it justice at all, difficult to photograph. Here's a handsome and very rare late 19th century French porcelain Russian Imperial plate by Escalier de Cristal. Part of a service commissioned by the Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich(1857-1905) and Grand Duchess Elisabeth(1864-1918) Measuring 9 1/8" across, the white porcelain plate features a heavy richly worked 3/4" gilt border with the gilt cipher of the Grand Duke& Duchess beneath an Imperial crown. Cinnabar red Escalier de Cristal mark on the underside. There is an in-the-making 1/2" bruise on the inside food of the plate(not a chip.see photograph) but everything else is fine. The Plate is finely Enamelled with a unique Russian Abstract design and has the Artist's cipher with the Date 1922. I have been told the artist is highly sought after and his paintings from this period can sell well into the millions of dollars. I am told few plates like this were produced in the imperial porcelain works in the 1920s period. I have not seen another plate like this offered so I believe this is a rare find. The Plate is in excellent all original condition with some minor signs of surface wear but certainly no chips. Cracks or repairs. The Plate also displays very nicely measuring 9-1/2" across and sitting 1-1/4" tall at the raised edge.
