New York. They were one of the earliest manufacturers of fine quality porcelain in the United States. Today they are highly sought after. This oyster plate is beautifully done in the form of a large clam shell with four oyster-shaped places for the oysters. Little sea plants and creatures are done in relief on the plates, and many of them are outlined with fine gilding. A deep sand-dollar functions as a place for your cocktail sauce. The colors on this plate are a little more unusual than most. The plate is marked with company's yellow stamp over the glaze and the company's ... moregreen stamp under the glaze. Rare UPW Union Porcelain Works Oyster 6 Well Plate American USA Porzellan Teller
For sale is the rarest of the oyster plates made by the Union Porcelain Works around 1881. It is nicely shaped and modeled with seaweed and shells in relief as well as a gold trim. Nice pink and a little light blue color on this one! This size and shape is the hardest to find and the most valuable. These are highly collectible and really quite nice. American porcelain after all is much less common than its European counterparts. The plate has six wells for oysters as well as one shell for the sauce. It has some fun items painted or in relief like a red crab. A blue frog, a pink crab claw and a few shells. Hard to see it all in the pictures. The plate is in perfect condition with a tiny bit of wear and a small firing crack on the front one side that does not go to the backside so it is very shallow and glazed over. This is from the making! ... moreThe plate is about 1.5 inches tall, 10.25 inches wide and 7.75 inches deep. It is marked as shown on the underside with the U.P.W. over the eagle's head in black with PAT. JAN. 4-1881 over it. Features a design of pink flowers. Look to me like they're probably chrysanthemums. The only markings I can see are a few numbers very lightly impressed on the bottom surface. There is a stylized plant, leaves& a bloom, tied together at the stem, draped over a cream colored ground. The cream glazed shells have a hint of green, ending in brown at the scalloped tips. WOW! Stunning Cobalt and Gold 6" Meissen Style Oyster Plate Up for auction is one Oyster Plates/Bowls measuring 6" in diameter. It is marked Thuringia from Germany. In the 18th century there were so many porcelain manufacturers they merely marked their wares with the region. It is very similar to oyster plates by the well known Meissen manufacturer from Germay. Most oyster plates of this style measure 9" This measures 6" and is normally referred to as a ladies plate. It is in very good condition. Free of cracks, chips or repairs. It shows some minor wear to the glaze from stacking which I have photographed. You don't notice them unless you are looking for them. It is impressed with a hand written"X" on the bottom. I estimate this plate dates to the late 19th. Early 20th century. This is one of two that we are listing this month. This plate was part of a set of 8 owned by his great-grandmother, Anna Mueller. When she died, the set was split between her two daughters who had lived with her in Boston. Anna moved to Denver in the twenties with her daughter Bertha(Greg's grandmother) who had one child, Greg's father) Louis. When Bertha died in 1967, her 4 plates went to him. Finally, when Greg's father died in 1979, the plates were split between Greg, his sister and two brothers. Greg is the only one of the 4 great grandchildren still to have his plate. But we are liquidating in our older years, and chose to pass it along to someone who will love it as much as his family has over these ... moremany years. U.P.W. Oyster Plates are not only fun but highly collectible. A merican porcelain. After all is much less common that its European counterparts which makes each American piece all the more valuable. If you are looking at this plate, you might already know the history of oyster plates in America, but if you don't, I offer my limited knowledge. The Union Porcelain Works company was based in Greenpoint. New York. They were one of the early manufacturers of fine quality porcelain in the United States Through my research, I have learned that this is one of the rarer of the oyster plates made by the Union Porcelain Works circa 1881. This larger size with 6 oyster shaped wells and 2 scallop shells for sauce are generally harder to find, and as I understand are more valuable than the smaller 4 oyster shell plates made by UPW. Each UPW oyster plate was hand painted and is very unique in its own right. This plate is in very good condition and shows no obvious wear to the paint, or the gilding which enhances both scallop shells and the outer bottom of the clam shell. This antique and rare majolica oyster plate is a production ot the famous factory of WASMUEL in Belgium. The colors and the pattern with shells and lily of the valley are really splendid. The plate is in excellent condition fom above with no cracks. No chips, no discoloration. The circular sauce well mimics the outer area with ribs and waves. A dainty coloring of pink washes against a white ground is accented with light dry-brushed gold. The wavy rim is gold gilt accented as well. The plate has an impressed mark Resis trirt. The term registrirt is not a typographical ... moreerror. But the older form of the German word registriert which means"registered" This early form of copyright showed the item was registered under a local authority and generally used in the late 1800s.
