Antique English Creamware Ceramic enamel floral decorated pottery plate c1790
English Creamware purple monochrome enamel decorated feather-edge pottery square shaped serving dish. The enameling on the molded shell-edge is feathered carefully into the grooves. This dish is decorated in the manner of James Bakewell. An enameler who worked for Wedgwood from 1769-1777. Bakewell's signature decoration was of flowers painted in a very relaxed and flowing style in either the rose-purple monochrome or yellow and black enamel colors. He did sign some of his work with either a"JB" or a"B" painted in overglaze purple on the bottom. This dish is unmarked and we date it to c1790. It measures 10 inches long and is 7 1/2 inches wide. You can see a very similar dish on page 33 of Robin Reilly's book, Wedgwood The New Illustrated Dictionary. That one, however, is signed with a"JB. CONDITION: Restoration ... moreto glaze wear on the rim A LITTLE BACKGROUND: While cream-colored earthenware first appeared in Staffordshire sometime between 1730-1740. Production later spread to Derbyshire and Yorkshire and then to Europe. In the 1760s Josiah Wedgwood proved his genius for developing a superior material from a standard formula. After much experimentation with the addition of cornish Clay and China Stone, he is credited for literally"inventing" a new ceramic body. At first the Wedgwood version was known as Queens Ware but as other competitors joined the hunt the material became known generically as Creamware. Dishes similar to the one pictured here were also made at the Leeds Pottery in Yorkshire and also at that the Melbourne Pottery in Derbyshire. Please let us know if you have any questions. And. Antique English Creamware Lobbed & Pierced floral decorated pottery Plate c1770
Antique English Creamware Ceramic Lobbed and Pierced Purple enamel floral decorated Pottery plate. Melbourne Pottery. Derbyshire, c1770 CONDITION: Restoration to glaze on rim and two minor hairlines secured. Some staining on the back and to one side due to wear. Measurements: 11" long x 9 1/4" wide A little background on English Creamware: Cream-colored earthenware first appeared in Staffordshire sometime between 1730-1740. Production later spread to Derbyshire and Yorkshire and then to Europe. In the 1760s Josiah Wedgwood proved his genius for developing a superior material from a standard formula. After much experimentation with the addition of cornish Clay and china Stone, he literally"invented" a new ceramic body. At first the Wedgwood version was known as Queens Ware but as other competitors joined the hunt the material ... morebecame known generically as Creamware. c1820 Opaque China Creamware Plate, Iron Red & Cobalt Blue Water Lilies, 10"
This is a 10" very old English plate with"Opaque China" in a cartouche on the back. I don't know who make it but it is reminiscent of many Mason's patterns. It is 10" across and in very good condition. There is a glaze pop on the front and several little factory flaws on the back. It has a nice old shape with a circle of blue glaze inside the foot rim that might date it back to creamware.

Early Toy Creamware Transfer Print Cup Plate SCHOOL BOYS GYMNASTICS c1820
800x600 Rare Miniature Pearlware Childs Toy Creamware Transfer Print Cup Plate JUVENILE AMUSEMENTS ~ SCHOOL MATES Staffordshire England 1820 This is a rare miniature creamware transfer printed cup plate or child’s toy plate. It was part of a series of miniature plates that depicted childrens games and garden amusements. The little plate measures 3 1/2” in diameter with a hand cut scalloped rim. The border of the plate is outlined in red and the center is transfer printed in forest green. The plate is finished with pearlware glaze. The plate was crudely potted. Typical of these early ceramic child's toy. The central image shows school boys wearing hats and leaning on each other in a gymnastic formation. A desirable decoration. Naive and folky charm and hard to come by in this miniature size. As would be expected. The plate is unmarked ... moreexcept for a tiny tally mark. It was probably made in the Staffordshire region of England though it may hail from Leeds or another northern potting region in the early part of the 19th century. The plate is in very good condition. With 3 teensy fleabites on the rim. No other chips cracks or repairs. The workmanship is haphazard, which is one of the reasons many people love these wares.not fine china, and not meant to be; it was made for children and dolls and probably considered disposable. There are little gouges and bumps and transfer wrinkles and glazed over edge crizzling original to the making. The naïve and hasty style adds to the folksy charm. Stilt marks and other typical manufacturing imperfections original to the making. Offered as is, this rare plate in a beautiful color combination makes an exceptional addition to any folk art or early ceramics collection. A perfect pocket size work of art! We have listed a companion plate showing the school boys playing leap frog. Along with other whimsical variety of early Staffordshire transferware and children's wares this week, and are happy to combined shipping of multiple purchases. Please send us an email with any que
