Oyster plates and shooters are special to me. Why? They are not only lovely and in some cases unique in themselves. But no other pottery conjures up so rapidly the magic of the sea. They call to mind sunshine, seawater, glistening oysters, lemons and heaven. Offered here is a beautiful antique Austrian Victoria Carlsbad oyster plate. Old fashioned in it's charm. It features 6 wells plus a well. Hand painted draped rose pattern and gilded, it is 8 3/4" in diameter. On the back is a faint blue mark that reads Victoria Carlsbad, Austria. The mark was used between 1891 and 1918 by the Victoria Porcelain Factory. Antique 19th Century Limoges Hand Painted Porcelain Shell Oyster Plate
My antique dealer tells me this is a rare early Limoges porcelain oyster plate. He loves the opalescent painting and raised shapes that make the shells look real. It measures 7 7/8" in diameter and sits 1/2" above the table at the edge and 3/4" to the top of the shells. The pattern has oyster shells trimmed in gold with sea shells and seaweed as a background. The bottom has"something) G.L. impressed and a painted red triangle Limoges mark.The plate weighs 1 pound 2.2 ounces. This plate is in excellent condition for it's age and use. There is very minor wear on the gold paint around the shells(pictured) There is a small chip on the bottom of the plate(pictured) I can find no other flaws of any kind. Common oyster preparations include smoking, frying, roasting, or steaming. One of the most distinctive oyster recipes, Oysters Rockefeller, was conceived in 1899 at the famed New Orleans restaurant, Antoine’s. The original recipe remains a family secret, but a typical version calls for oysters on the half-shell covered with some combination of greens, sauce, and bread crumbs, then baked. This plate was designed over a hundred and thirty years ago by an artist at the Porcelain de Paris factories. It is a simply elegant and beautiful plate decorated like a colorful hand painted seashell with a watery swirl. It has the smaller 5 oyster wells motif and the central Lemon well is a soft pearly grey. Antique Hand Painted Oyster Plate c1850-1891, op228
Offered for your collecting enjoyment is this lovely antique oyster plate. I have had many of these over the years that were marked with the Haviland and Co. mark. This one was made between 1855 and 1891 before they had to start marking each item with the country of manufacture. This one is marked with incompleat numbers on the back in a redish color. It is hand painted and features 6 wells for oysters. Three depict red coral on the bottom of the sea, the other 3 are oyster"scars" on the shell with a pink and light blue background. The center well is a lovely lemonny color for lemon wedges or vinegrette. It is in excellent condition for its great age with no chips or cracks on the front! It does have some wear to the high points from stacking which is normal for a plate this old and a small chip on the back that is not seen from ... morethe front. It measures 9.25 inches in diameter. Hand painted in brown with gold paint around its rim. The plate has five wells. The only marking is the number 2, which appears on the underside of the plate. This type of numerical marking, from my experience, appears to be typical of either Austrian or German manufacture, but I can't be absolutely sure. The plate measures 9 in diameter and weighs 1 lb and 1 oz. This is one of a pair of truly beautiful fish plates shaped like large oyster shells. Each has a hand painted design of shells in the center in muted tans. Pinks and pale blue. It has a sister plate that I am also listing today. They were made by Wedgwood and have the trademark on the back. Each plate is 10& 5/8" long by 7& 1/8" wide and 1& 3/8" deep.
