This plate features alternating floral& sprigs with pierced work in between. The border and embellished with hand painted gold highlights and has the artist's# in gold on the back This beautiful plate combines fruit transfers on the center of the bowl and the floral medallions. This would appear to have been originally created to serve fruit. This large plate is 11 7/8" in diameter and 1 3/4" in height. Excellent condition with no chips. Cracks, or breaks. Antique English Creamware Ceramic enamel floral decorated pottery plate c1790
English Creamware purple monochrome enamel decorated feather-edge pottery square shaped serving dish. The enameling on the molded shell-edge is feathered carefully into the grooves. This dish is decorated in the manner of James Bakewell. An enameler who worked for Wedgwood from 1769-1777. Bakewell's signature decoration was of flowers painted in a very relaxed and flowing style in either the rose-purple monochrome or yellow and black enamel colors. He did sign some of his work with either a"JB" or a"B" painted in overglaze purple on the bottom. This dish is unmarked and we date it to c1790. It measures 10 inches long and is 7 1/2 inches wide. You can see a very similar dish on page 33 of Robin Reilly's book, Wedgwood The New Illustrated Dictionary. That one, however, is signed with a"JB. CONDITION: Restoration ... moreto glaze wear on the rim A LITTLE BACKGROUND: While cream-colored earthenware first appeared in Staffordshire sometime between 1730-1740. Production later spread to Derbyshire and Yorkshire and then to Europe. In the 1760s Josiah Wedgwood proved his genius for developing a superior material from a standard formula. After much experimentation with the addition of cornish Clay and China Stone, he is credited for literally"inventing" a new ceramic body. At first the Wedgwood version was known as Queens Ware but as other competitors joined the hunt the material became known generically as Creamware. This auction is for a Lovely Antique Ironstone Polychrome Plate. It is beautifully decorated in a floral design with hand applied underglaze coloring. It is in very good condition especially for its age. There are no chips or cracks. There is fine even crazing as expected from Ironstone of this era. It only adds to the character and authenticity of the plate. There are no markings but by the form and feel and design it likely dates to the mid 1800s and was manufactured by one of the potters in the Staffordshire region of England such as Alcock. GOLD EDGE Up for auction is this Antique Porcelain Plate which is glazed with orange poppies and purple flowers and a gold edge. This plate appears to be very old. The glaze on the bottom appears“crackly” under a magnifying glass. There are numbers on the bottom which can be seen in the pictures. It is 9 1/4” in diameter, 5 1/8” across the bottom and 1 1/8” tall. It is in excellent condition with no nicks, chips or cracks. I do not know who made this plate, there is some kind of marking on the base which shows what I think says AP and then something else, but as you can see in the pictures it is really lovely. This marking can be seen in the eighth picture about an inch below the hand written marking. It would make a beautiful decorator piece. Antique Soft Paste Leeds Feather Edge Transfer Decorated Peafowl 5.5" Plate
Up for auction is an antique bird decorated bird decorated blue feather edge. With brown transferware design rose decorated soft paste porcelain plate recently found at auction in the suburban Philadelphia, PA area. It is offered in as found used condition. There are two large cracks and a few rim chips. It is quite an uncommon pattern, fettering two peafowl in a trasferware design in the center of this plate. The edges are in a blue feathery edge design, much in the manner of a leeds plate. It is approximately 5 1/2" in diameter. A nice plate for display and certainly worthy of restoration. Primary colors are brown and blue on a white background. There is a nice raised border. A wonderful quality piece.
