Vintage INLAID WOOD Japanese Puzzle Box, Mt. Fuji & Scotties - Secret Drawer
This is a Vintage Japanese Puzzle Box that my Uncle gave to me in the early 1970s. It is hand crafted with Inlaid Wood and painted with a pretty Mt. Fuji scene. On the reverse are two Scotty Dogs. The inlaid strips of wood are of various shades and in an interesting geometric pattern. These designs successfully hide the openings of the box revealing a secret compartment. It m easures 6" by 4" by 3" It is a bit frail and some of the pieces may need re-glued. But it can still be gently opened. I have tried to photograph the method of opening. It's a matter of sliding one piece. Then another, then another, in a specific order. There is damage to the back corner of the box. It has a nice, aged patina and the colors are still visible. Victorian era vanity case probably used when travelling. It is constructed of rare rosewood with silk material lining and glass jars and bottles with silver plated tops. One glass bottle has a small chip out of the neck not affecting it's operation. The strip that once held tools such as nail files is a bit loose could be repaired but I have tried to leave it as original as possible. There is a secret jewelry drawer under that can be released once you open the box top and pull up a button. It is spring loaded and pops out. There is a more recent black velvet lining to the base of this drawer. There are stop hinges that support the lid when open. Recently acquired it at an estate sale. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself. The lap desk is probably English made. But that is just a guess, you be the judge. F or your consideration is this beautiful antique lap desk in very nice condition. The wood is most likely walnut and it has a great luster to it. What makes this piece really unique is the secret slide drawer compartment at the bottom of the case. It can be opened by opening the case and then taking the brass rod out of the left side of the box that"locks" it in place. My guess is this piece dates to the mid to late 1800s. You be the judge before buying. This lap desk is beautiful with ... moreonly small surface scratches. The corners are seamed togethers. A slice of veneer below the secret drawer is missing. Very nice wood and graining. The inside folding pieces are still all there as well. The hinges are all there. The top panel of the desk has come unglued and I have left it that way. I took the pics of the case with what I think was the inside of the case, but I think it looks better that way. So leaving top unglued, so that the next owner can decide which side they want showing. The lock and latch and the bone piece around the key hole are there, the case did not come with a key. The top of the inside of the desk has a green felt fabric on it which shows wear. The bone pull is on the secret drawer to pull it out. The desk has two brass handles to carry it by. Both sides of the lap desk open for storage. Has open areas for two ink bottles in the well areas. One on the left and one on the right. The bottom of the lap desk has felt that is coming off. The bottom of the case needs some re-gluing as well. Interesting small Japanese or Chinese bronze. One side of the base slides out as it is a drawer. The other pieces fit together perfectly but each in only one position. 19th C Wood Travel Desk, "John C. Gile, Philadelphia" - 3 Secret Drawer
This auction is for a wonderful old 19th century travel or lap desk. It measures 21" wide by 12 1/2" deep by 9 1/4" high and weighs 28 1/2 pounds. There is a crack in the top. But the hinges are good and it has all its brass fixtures, including a handle on each end that lies flat and pulls up for use. The name plate on the top has"John C. Gile, Philadelphia" in script. I don't know if this is the same man or not, but there is a John C Gile, age 23, on the 1860 Philadelphia Census. Also, during the Civil War, there was a John Gile who enlisted as a Private in Co. C, 68th Infantry Regiment, PA, on Aug. 4, 1862 and deserted from the same on Oct. 7, 1862, and I don't know if this is the same man or not as the owner of the desk, but it's fun to think they're the same person! Vintage Antique Steamer Trunk Chest with False Bottom & Secret Drawer
Up for bid is this antique Steamer Trunk. It has a false bottom& a secret drawer. The secret drawer opens by turning a screw that releases a latch. I'll let you figure out which screw to turn. The interior is cedar& it has a removable tray. The latch has come loose& it says on it Eagle Lock Company Terryville. Conn. There was a couple pieces in it but I don't think they go to the trunk. I will include them in the auction. The latch looks like it was glued on. The trunk has a removable tray which is made of cedar as is the interior& the secret drawer. The exterior is steel or tin or sheet steel or what ever you want to call it. It's magnetic, with wood accents. The raised strips areas riveted on the trunk on the exterior are wood with the rest being metal. The secret drawer opens& closes smoothly. I guess people ... moreback in the day had problems with their relatives stealing stuff too or were into smuggling. It is spring loaded so when you turn the latch the drawer pops out. Some idiot has painted the trunk white. It should be fairly easy to strip off. It looks like it is already peeling off& shouldn't be too much trouble to get off. The red interior has one are that has a spot in it as seen in the picture& a small damaged area where the lock goes as seen in the picture. The trunk is heavy weighing approximately 39 pounds. The trunk measures approximately 24" tall by 14.25" front to back& 18" to the top most part of the curved top lid. This trunk will look cool restored sitting by the foot of the bed& with the cedar wood it will keep all the bed bugs out of what ever you like to store in it. You know this will be a cool restoration project for you during the long winter months. In the last picture I show the latch& the 3 extra pieces I found in the trunk. Recently acquired it at an estate sale. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself! The lap desk is probably English made. But that is just a guess, you be the judge. F or your consideration is this beautiful antique lap desk in very nice condition. The wood is most likely walnut and it has a great luster to it. What makes this piece really unique is the secret slide drawer compartment at the bottom of the case. It can be opened by opening the case and then taking the brass rod out of the left side of the box that"locks" it in place(rod with it needs to have end taken off) My guess is this piece dates to the mid to late 1800s. You be the judge before ... morebuying. This lap desk is beautiful with only small surface scratches. The corners are seamed together. A slice of veneer alongside the secret drawer is missing. There are a number of veneer pieces that are loose and come with the case to be put back in to place. Very nice wood and graining. The inside folding pieces are still all there as well. The hinges are all there. The lock and latch are not with the case. The top of the inside of the desk has a green felt fabric on one side that is pretty worn and is missing on the other side. The desk has two brass handles to carry it by on the sides that are still in place. Top of the case shows some splitting of the wood from drying out on the right side. Rest of case looks pretty good. There was a knot in the wood in the back where the knot fell out sometime after the case was made. Chip out of the wood on the front right side just before the brass support piece. There was probably an insert of bone or brass on top of case where a piece of wood is now set in that place. The brass corner and support pieces on this case are all in place. Vintage Japanese Musical Puzzle Box with Secret Drawer
This box takes 4 moves to open the lid and then another move at the opposite end to reveal a drawer with a bird on it. Originally it would have made a bird song as it was removed, the metal strings are still there but the stricker is missing. Slight water stain to top and what appears to be a small burn on the bottom side, the rest of the box is in very good aged condition. JAPANESE VINTAGE LIDDED SECRET SECTION 7 DRAWER TANSU HARIBAKO ZELKOVA WOOD
This is an early Showa vintage(c. 1930's) haribako(sewing box) with a unique arrangement of five drawers with an additional accessible section(6th drawer) under the lid. When this 6th drawer is removed it reveals a secret 7th drawer. There is a finger hole used to access this secret section(see pictures 8 and 9) This type of tansu chest was used to store valuables as well as equipment for the person of the house to do repairs on Kimono and bedding as well as money and valuables. Exceptional skill is shown in the construction of this chest with dovetailed sides as well as all wooden pin construction(see last picture) The lidded top section divides into three areas. One area has a lift out pin cushion tray. And the far right has a pop up"third hand" see picture 10) which was used hold a piece of cloth so as to make use of both ... morehands.Very unusual and convenient! This haribako has a fine-grained keyaki(zelkova) wood exterior with interior made of Japanese kiri(paulownia wood) This chest has been well used yet well loved and with the exception of very minor wear as seen in my enlarged pictures. This chest remains in very fine condition throughout. There are a few scuffs on the backside(seen in picture 5) There is some minor(about 1/16" separation in the wood on the back corner(seen in enlarged picture 5) It does not. However affect the function or use of this fine piece. All drawers run smoothly and the top lidded section swings open and closed with ease. Offered here is an impressive antique walnut veneered multi compartment jewel or work box with lift out tray. Mirrored lid and'secret' drawer. The box measures 12" x 9" x 7" and is in nice condition as per photos below with a few minor issues. The beading which retains the mirror is missing from the lower edge of the lid but could easily be reinstated. The brass escutcheon is missing from the keyhole surround. Key is present but lock does not appear to work. These issues aside this is a very attractive functional box which is offered here with a low price start and no reserve.

This is a Japanese sewing box from the early 1900's(1910- 1935) The outside body. The front, top, back and sides is a lightly lacquered mulberry veneer on chestnut The insides(drawers) are made of paulownia(Kiri) a very light weight Asian wood. The drawer pulls are patinated brass. It comes with an older style Japanese bamboo ruler. It's in a slot in the upper right corner of the right side. See photos# 3& 4. This was from when Japan was going metric so this ruler metric on one side and"sun" pronounced"soon" on the other side. 1 sun is just over an inch at 1.193 inches. Thank you Wikipedia) The ruler can be seen in the photos# 4& 5. The body is held together by means of Japanese joinery and wood pegs. This can be especially seen in the corners. see Photo# 4) This sewing box is 10 1/2 inches high(26 cm) ... more12 3/4 inches wide(32 cm) and 7 7/8 inches deep(20 cm) It weighs 6 1/4 pounds(2.8 kilo) One thing very cool about this box is it has a secret drawer. Just to the left of the slot for the ruler on the right side of the sewing box is a Japanese fan shaped hole. photos# 3& 4) When you push into this hole with your finger. A drawer will pop out on the other side. Photos# 6. 7& 10) When you look at the left side with the drawer shut, notice that even the grain of the wood continues across the drawer front with the rest of the body. While you're admiring the wood grain on the side, notice that the wood grain on the front drawers also continue across the drawers and body. It's very easy to admire the carpentry in this. In this era a women would often make the kimonos for the house hold. Repair the ones they had as well as futons and anything else that needed repairing material wise. This was a woman's tool box. And because they were so necessary and so often used, like many of the everyday but necessary items in Japan, they were made beautifully. Antique English Wood Tantalus. Brass Decoration,Crystal Decanters,Secret Drawer Another Bygone Antiques great find! Circa 1880. These wooden boxes. Decorated with brass, were designed to hold decanters of liquors and spirits. They were meant to"tantalize" the servants and children because the bottles could not be removed unless the box was opened with the key. The key is muissing. The top of the box opens to reveal 3 interior compartments. When the top is open, there is a button which opens a drawer in the bottom of the box. Inside are compartments for storing playing cards. This tantalus is in good condition with a few issues. One decanter has a rim chip and one stopper is broken off. The broken stopper when installed on any of the decanters is too tall to fit in the space. There is some damage to the finish on the top right by ... morethe brass decoration and a screw is loose causing a tab to lift a little. There is also a screw missing on the left top decoration. This is an early Showa vintage(1930) haribako(sewing box) with a unique arrangement of five drawers with an additional accessible section(6th drawer) under the lid. When this 6th drawer is removed it reveals a secret 7th drawer. There is a finger hole used to access this secret section(see picture 9) This type of tansu chest was used to store money and valuables as well as equipment for the person of the house to do repairs on kimono and bedding. The lidded top section divides into three areas. One area has a lift out pin cushion tray. And the far right has a pop up"third hand" which was used hold a piece of cloth so as to make use of both hands(see picture 11)Very unusual and convenient! UP FOR AUCTION: antique ca.1890-1910. Wooden puzzle box with a secret drawer made in Japan This ornate box measures 4 5/8" long x 3 1/4" wide x 2 1/8" tall. The box is decorated with hand inlaid marquetry consisting of various types of wood. The top lid is depicting a traditional lake front home and sailboats with a snow capped Mt. Fuji in the distant background. The bottom of the box is decorated with a stylized floral Rose and Leaf motif. The sides of the box are decorated in a classic marquetry design of offset squares in various shades of wood. The box has 4 functions: slide one side down. You’ll see the tray with many figured wood lidded compartments, each having a tiny carved bone knob, but in order to lift it out you must remove a little curved tray between he front 2 compartments and slid the lock to release, but that’s not all. You must then lift out the front board which has ribbon tabs in order to lift out the tray. Under the tray is a large area for storing valuables. There is also a secret drawer in the bottom of the box that can only be slid forward from the bottom of the box. Someone tried to pry it out and chip the front lower corners, not bad& probably an easy fix. Both of the large compartments are lined in hand marbled paper and the sewing tools velvet tray is a later addition. The mirror ... moreshows just a little aging and the moulding around the mirror matches the exterior moulding. The keyhole has an bone escutcheon and the lock is in place. I haven’t found a key as yet to work the lock but if I do, I’ll certainly include it. I know shipping cost will be high due to the size& weight of 8.5 pounds before packing materials. Here is a bit of a mystery. I bought this at auction. It is clearly a sewing box with 8 rods on the top to take cotton reels.
