It is fully functional and very sturdy! I noticed that one of the screws is missing from the top portion of the writing desk so the top is a tiny bit loose with a slight wiggle. There are some pen marks and paint marks on the desk- you know how kids are! There is a 4 in split in the wood on the top writing desk. There are scuffs and scratches from use/storage. This special lap desk was made of a wood with veneer over and a mother of pearl inlay. The interior writing surfice has a blue velvet fabric glued on and a black velvet ribbon acrossed the top where the hings are. There are six compartments on the inside for paper. Writing tools, and whatnots. The top lid has some cracking and veneer is missing on the side and it has damage where the hinges go(on top and bottom) See photos. The lock is present and there is no key. Locking top plate needs to be reattached. Its hinges need to be reworked. The hinges are included. But the location on the box needs to be repaired. Antique small Captain's or Davenport desk. Mom and Dad collected antiques for decades. Starting in the 1950's, this is from their estate. Dad often would provide cards on some of their antiques. The following is his writeup: Captain's desk. 32" high by 21" wide by 20" deep. Height to writing surface is 27" at front, 29" at back, has 18" wide by 5 1/4" deep raised compartment with hinged lid. Has four drawers, each with two pulls that open on the RH side, false fronts and pulls on LH side, each drawer 11" wide by 4 1/4" high by 16" deep. Has two inside drawers under writing surface. All surfaces except turnings have pecan burled veneer, narrow inlay on top and front, porcelain casters" This desk is in very good to excellent condition for it's age-see pictures. New lowered reserve- This Secretary Desk was purchased in New York@ the end of the 19th Century and was passed down from my great great Grandmother finally to me. I couldn’t find any specific maker or label anywhere. But I just might not know where to look. It’s in pretty good overall condition considering its age. My Grandmother said it was from 1897( 115 years old) She died in 1982 and I have had it since. There is one portion near the top edge( 3rd from last pic) which must have come off when I moved last year, but it seems nominal and the repair should be straight forward. I was able to simply hide this in a right side corner configuration and it was not really noticeable looking at it from the left side or straight on, only unless you were looking from the right. This desk set is richly decorated with hand painted Oriental scenes; in addition there are two inkwells made of glass on each side. The box had a key that is missing; the top unfolds and has a red velvet cover allowing the user to write easily. The cover unfolds and there an inner compartment to keep paper or hand writing utensils. On the top. There is a small box, most likely for envelops or short pads. There is a small drawer which has a note dated July 15, 1915! This would be a perfect addition to any serious collector of handwriting ... morehardware from the past. It comes with its own antique skeleton key stamped Germany on it to use to open all brass locking drawers and cabinet door. All drawers are connected and interlocked with dovetails and feature protruding wood dowels to stick out of the back interior of the drawers to catch the drawers from pulling all the way out. Please read what I stated below about this gorgeous European cabinet's condition: Overall stable intact cabinet that is heavy strong and sturdy. I believe this lap desk original came from SPAIN. This travel lap desk has been used through the years so there are expected signs of wear from normal use. The wood on the bottom has a split. I am sure not too difficult of a repair. The red cloth writing surface is worn and a bit soiled. The wood is overall nice but there are some minor scratches and scuffs from age and use. Nice looking original primitive antique desk topper. Unknown origin, maker, age. As you see it is stenciled 1766 in the same color dark stain as the rest of the piece. Nice size at 30" wide, 9 1/2" tall, and 6" deep. The wood construction is all 1/4" except for the supports. I added extra pictures to show the condition, surface wear, scratching, marks, ect. It is a solid piece in overall good useable condition, no wood cracking, breaks or chips, just the minor condition issues from age and use. The cast iron legs have a neat Victorian Scroll design and are marked Buffalo New York and with the number 3 and three patent dates from 1881. 1890 and 1897. This is one gorgeous piece of wood. It is burled walnut and is from the early 1800s. It is a lap desk or maybe used as a bed tray. It is 32" long and 14" tall. It is in really nice condition. You can obviously tell it is a true antique but I don't see any chips on the edges, etc. Please ask if you have questions. The drawers are all dove tailed joined indicating earlier era construction and show aged wood inside. Here's what I stated about this gorgeous cabinet's condition: One wood split crack and chip of inlaid veneer marquetry on front middle of bottom drawer. The drawers have some resistance when pulling out. I have up for sale a very nice vintage/ antique circa 1870s- 1890s smaller size Hand Carved Wood Traveling Secretary Lap Writing Desk. It measures approx 13-5/8" long. 9-1/2" deep,and 3" high on the back section. The top lid folds down to reveal a writing surface, still has the old velvet, the ribbon is a recent replacement of course. Under this is a storage area for papers or documents. The top section folds up, for a storage area for pens, inkwells and accessories. I am not sure if this is Black Forest but it does have very nice hand carved designs- the top panel has leaves.Vines,and either berries or grapes. The back portion is hinged and lifts up to reveal an area for pens and possibly for inkwells or whatever. This is a Beautiful 19 th Century Traveling Lap Desk. The box is covered in a wood veneer and has an inlay circle on the lid and around the key hole. The writing surface is covered in green velvet and is original to the piece. The hinges are original and in good repair. In addition to storage under the writing surfaces. There are four compartments, one of which is covered. The bottom of the desk is covered in green felt. The box is in very good aged condition. There are few places were the veneer has broken and there are some age or shrinkage cracks to the wood(see pictures) The box is 14” across. 9” wide, and 5” tall. It was procured at an Antique Estate Auction in Central Kentucky.

An unusual find at an estate sale is this 1800s Victorian travel writing desk with inkwell. Stuffed full of copperplate handwritten letters. There are over 100 letters, some with envelopes, in the storage compartment under the blotter. The beautiful wood box needs restoration, however, as it is in damaged condition. The front lock is missing, there is a brass curved corner piece missing, and the lid does not sit square- looks like a problem with a hinge adjustment. The felt on the underside is missing, and the blue velvet blotter on the writing surface is stained. A cut glass inkwell is missing its lid. There is a crack in the veneer on the front, and a chip on the back. The inlaid brass straps are present with original patina. The brass oval disc on the lid is loose, and has not been monogrammed. Antique Wood Roll Top Lap Desk, Travel Writing Slope Box w Drawer, Nice Patina
Beautiful Antique Roll Top Lap Desk. Writing Slope Up for your consideration is this truly beautiful antique lap desk. Made of wood. I am uncertain of the actual type of wood but has nice graining. This is just great in every way, it is intact and very secure when completely shut and when you pull out the drawer at the front, it will open the roll top portion in the back to expose a three section area inside. Once the roll top is open, you can unfold the desk portion which flips open from back to front and leans securely on the open drawer for stability, the desk has a purple or a worn blue felt top with brass hinges. Again, the wood is very nice inside and out, the drawer opens nicely as does the roll top portion. There is a large transfer decoration on the wood desk top, there is also the very slight remains of one on the top of the roll ... moretop framed area. There are only two areas with minor problems, first is the lower right corner which is missing a small corner wood piece, and the upper left corner of the framing of the roll top where there is also a small piece of wood missing; otherwise, working very well and looking very good. There is a brass lock in place for the drawer but no key and the hinges are brass as well and seem to be original. It measures 12 1/8" wide, 9 1/4" deep, 5 1/2" tall. It is very clean, no major breaks, cracks, or discoloration. Nice patina, nice scroll design in wood at the top roll top framing, transfer decoration is wearing and almost gone on the top portion, and of course, the two missing pieces mentioned earlier. Antique Victorian 1852 Wood Travel Lap Desk, Brass Hardware, w/ Key
This is an antique Victorian 1800s solid wood sloped travel lap desk with working brass lock and key. Featuring. Brass hinges and lock, blue felt writing surface with two storage compartments underneath. It has two inkwell compartments and the center section for pens lifts out. Found inside the center compartment was six nice quill pen ends and what appears to be some sort of pencil. The lapdesk wood looks beautiful and is undamaged. There is an inscription inside the box it is pictured and says that" This box was presented on December 25th 1852" So obvioulsy a Christmas gift. The lock and key work properly and the hinges are undamaged. The box is in very nice condition. The quill ends and pencil are included in this sell. The box appears to be solid walnut.
