There are a few small areas on the ornately carved back where there have been some small repairs to the ornately carved areas. There are a few light surface scratches to the finish from general use, but it has been very well cared for, and is in amazing condition. I am unsure of the exact age or manufacture of the piece. It most likely dates to the middle to last part of the 19th Century. It does have some cracking in the front writing surface of the desk, but these areas are superficial thus far. The desk is made of what I believe is mahogany, and has ornately carved accecents on the vitrine shelf supports which are done in reverse scrolls.

Beautiful old paw foot desk with elaborate articulate feet. The best feet I've seen.the carving is amazing from all angles.toes. Tufts, fur, nails. The desk is in lovely condition. Cherished and not abused, from a non-smoking home. My parents bought it in Charlottesville, VA in the early 1970s. Beautiful striped veneer vertically across the slanted top. In exceptional condition for the age. Some small losses and light cracks in veneer, very small, I'm happy to send photos. Slant top desk that has tight brass hinges and longer elaborate hinge guides on each size of the slant plank Lovely inside. With drawers, and scalloped/scrolled cubbies. Four horizontal drawers. Measures approximately 53-1/4" ... morewide. 29"tall at bottom of slant/40" tall, and 19" deep at fold of slanted area, top is 8-1/2" I was just researching the dovetail joints on the 4 large drawers to see if I could better date this desk. The dovetails are not hand cut and irregular. But are consistent. Online I found this description: A close inspection shows no irregular saw cuts or variation from a skilled craftsman, but rather a precise and identical manufactured machined joint. These machine-cut dovetails are as strong and long lasting as the hand-made joints, and became the standard of better American furniture ever since the late 1890's. So this desk may be very late 1800s or early 1900s. Another indication is that the back is not multiple boards. But appears to be an early plywood? There is a tiny hole drilled in the back where I think my dad had our phone(land line) cord come in so the phone could be in the desk. Regardless, it is a beautiful old desk. The drawer fronts are solid wood and not veneers. It measures 47 inches long by 30 inches tall 18.75 inches deepest depth. Here's what I stated about this gorgeous desk's condition: Some chips and wood splits in area but overall strikingly beautiful condition very strong. Sturdy, and stable and nothing broken. Some minor scratch marks on surface areas. Looks like possibly a repair or replacement wood on one side because of the two slabs of wood evident. Here is an terrific mid-late 19th century flame mahogany column step back secretary with fold out desk. Turned legs and glass door bookcase or storage& display cabinet above and three large functional bureau drawers below. I've detailed the restoration work this lovely piece will need to bring it back to it's former full value in my detailed description of condition above and in my multiple photographs included to accurately represent the design, quality, condition and construction as well as the overall beauty and potential of this marvelous old piece of mahogany furniture bargain priced as a restoration project. It has had a few small professional repairs to the veneer previously. This wonderful cabinet travels easily in two pieces and stands 68 1/2 inches tall by 42 1/2 inches wide and 20 inches deep front to back. The top ... morebookcase section measures 33 1/2 inches tall by 42 1/2 inches wide at the bonnet by 12 3/4 inches deep front to back. It has 12 panes of glass in it's upper cabinet doors and three small drawers run across the bottom within the top cabinet just below the two display shelves. The bottom bureau section measures 36 inches tall with a 35 inch tall flat surface height when the desk is closed and a 3/4 inch recessed space along the back for the upper bookcase to rest in. The base is 42 1/2 inches wide and 20 inches deep front to back and had three drawers. Inside the top bookcase the cabinet measures 25 1/2 inches wide by 8 1/2 inches deep and 28 inches tall. Divided by a shelf with 12 inches clarance below the shelf and 15 inches clearance above the shelf. Below the shelves but inside the cabinet doors are three small beautifully hand dovetailed drawers, 11 1/4 wide by 5 3/4 inch front to back by 2 3/4 inch deep with the center drawer of the three actually being only 11 inches wide. The flaws in the top only add character and experience to the rich feel of this solid mahogany, handcrafted beauty. The wonderful handcarved cabriole legs with such an ornate fineal structure under the desktop are outstanding and capped with very ornate bronze eagle talons gripping it's ball feet present this piece of history with style, grace and strength. The side corners are reinforced with nice Brass staples. There is a Brass Fleur De Lei on the top that is Non monogrammed and a Fleur De Lei for the key hole cover. Gilt& blind tool leather. Below. There are three working moulded drawers to each side of the table(six in total) All drawers feature working locks and keys and the original brass key escutcheons. The drawers are hand dovetailed and constructed with mahogany(a further sign of good quality) Below the drawers sits a lovely moulded lip edge. The table sits on four lovely baluster shaped mahogany legs. The legs feature the original brass castor tip collars and original brass castors. Sometime around 1890. This antique butlers desk is a beautiful piece of furniture that will provide beauty, display, and function to whatever room you decide to display it in. Stunning mahogany wood was used to construct this lovely piece. It is worth noting before we continue the description that we believe this to be a“marriage” The bookcase ... moretop most likely did not originally go with the bottom section. However, they were made roughly around the same time and really look good together today. Marrying a top and bottom is not an uncommon practice. The top section has two adjustable shelves behind two old wavy glass doors. These shelves adjust by sliding in and out of grooves. This section also locks and a key is provided. Below the bookcase top is the actual antique butlers desk section. Closed it appears to be a chest of drawers. But the top drawer opens, the front flips down, and it reveals a wonderful desk interior. Various drawers and nooks are present for storage and the fall has a black leather insert which has recently been replaced. When open, the desk area measures 36.5″ wide x 18″ deep x 30.25″ from the floor. The drawers below were obviously used as some kind of filing system as each drawer has letters of the alphabet inlaid on them. This is an unusual thing to see and gives the piece some character and history. Another unusual trait are the very subtle satinwood string inlays just above the top drawer.
