This is avery rare carlton desk as it is made of Mahogany with 5 legs and has the letter holder slots. This piece was appraised at over $125.000.00 4 years ago. C. 1860, ADJUSTABLE LETTER INLAID CENTER& SIDE COMPARTMENTS This is a handsome early Victorian English mahogany reading and writing table dating to approximately 1860. The rectangular top has rounded corners and an adjustable center section inlaid with a brown leather panel decorated with gilt tooling. Flanking the center section are two hinged panels which open outward to reveal compartments. One open and the other with dividers. The front of the piece has a frieze center drawer with its original brass lock. Flanking this center drawer are two keyholes and locks which secure the compartments above. The side opposite the drawer has a slide which pulls out to provide a second writing surface. The table stands on beautiful leaf carved trestle feet with concealed brass ... morecasters. Partners' Desk- Antique English Mahogany -London- circa 1850
This over-sized partner's desk was made in England circa 1850. I found it in an antique store in 1974 and restored it. It served as my desk in my 40 years practicing law. And it never failed to draw compliments. It is the ingenious"pedestal" style, meaning that it consists of three pieces: 2 side pedestals(on concealed rollers) which contain locking drawers on one side and cabinets on the other, and the top which is inlaid leather. The top is grooved so as to fit perfectly atop the pedestals for a solid connection,yet easy moving. The tops of these desks were made of one solid piece of mahogany. As such, they are prone to crack along one line across the desktop. This was the case when I bought it. We repaired it and recovered the top using an ENTIRE cowhide. English Mahogany Schoolmaster's Antique Desk w/ Slanted Leather Top Late 19th Century w/ Ebonized Reeded Legs in the George III Style Item# 130009FPX20 This is a just lovely English Antique Schoolmaster's desk. Crafted in the late 19th Century of solid mahogany, mahogany veneers and pine secondaries. The slanted top provides a fine writing surface, covered in a warm-khaki tone tooled leather; lifting over original brass hinges, the interior retains what is probably an original blue paper liner and reveals a large storage space. Every aspect of the top is crafted with dovetails, from the tiny inkwells to the joinery of the entire slant front portion of the desk. Two small hand dovetailed drawers retain their original stamped brass hardware, framed in ebonized stringer inlays and retaining the same light blue papered liner. The desk ... morerests over boldly reeded and ebonized legs that terminate simply in stumped toes. Simply gorgeous for anyone decorating their home and looking for a great form in the hallway or entry way. A highly unique side table for a living room or a small writing desk to actually use for work and storage, this is a wonderful selection. With a warm patina and mellowing of the mahogany surfaces, remaining in quite wonderful condition throughout, this is a piece you will cherish for a lifetime. It is possible the piece was originally crafted mostly during the early 19th Century and was re-fashioned slightly or at least restored during the late 19th Century- there is some curious work with the dowel restorations around the drawer blades. The lack of matching between the screw wells in the frame to the underside of the slant front desk(though we have not attempted to remove the slant front to truly examine this) As such, it should be assumed as a late 19th Century work of simply gorgeous form, but should not be collected as pure or without alteration. Antique English-Made Late George III Three-Piece Inlaid Drop Front Secretary/ Bookcase Flame Mahogany. C. 1800 41”L x 21”D x 80.5”H This beautiful secretary bookcase is space-saving. Handsome and commanding. It comprises three independent parts- 1) Moulded cornice with graceful profile accentuated by faux inlaid dentils 2) Two-door book cabinet with intersecting mullions defining nine glass panes each 39”L x 11.25”D x 44.5”H 3) Drop-front desk has 8 letter pidgeonholes and 4 drawers laid out side-by-side. Drawers have beautiful brass pulls. Original leather desktop has embossed border around. The drop front has swan neck brass pulls and plates. Although the righthand pull is missing. The cabinet below has two doors with frame and panel construction. Bracket feet support the whole at bottom. The desk is made of mahogany intricately inlaid ... moreacross cornice. Desk front and lower cabinet doors with ribbons& garlands together with fine trim lines and geometrics. These inlays may be period or may have been added in the later Edwardian(1890-1920) The top of the drop front is trimmed all the way around its perimeter in satin wood. Both right and left sides of the three components display a rectangular accent trim inlay. Desk drop front. And upper and lower cabinet doors have large keyed case locks, which date the desk to the late George III period. Original keys are included. This is a superb example of English cabinet-making art at the highest level. The desk is in very good condition. With few dents. There is a horizontal crack running from the lower right side to about the middle of the desk front(see photo) The brass pull on left side is missing. The wood trim at the top of the lefthand letter pidgeonhole needs re-glueing. Small piece from left foot on side needs re-glueing. Interior desktop leather is original and could stand to be replaced. Offered here is an excellent antique 19th century English secretary desk. This desk is in very good antique condition. It stands 87" high. Is 44" wide at the widest point and 22" deep. Each side of the base is built with a single 22" mahogany board. The desk features an interior fitted with 6 small drawers, a locking(key included) door interior compartment, and flanking that, 2"hidden" vertical pull out cash and document compartments which are disguised as books. These have actual leather bindings labeled in gold ROWE'S WORKS 1 and ROWE'S WORKS 2. Please see photos. The base houses 4 graduated drawers and the pull outs to support the desk writing surface. This desk is solid and stable. This desk. As is the case with all truly old furniture, does have some condition issues. These are the following: One ... morepane of the multi paned glass doors has been replaced on one door. There is a split on one side of the desk base. Please see photos. There is a repair to the lower exterior right corner of the fall front. One leg was repaired. I believe that the hardware was replaced many years ago. Some of the drawer locks are frozen, but all original locks are present, as well as the 2 keys. Otherwise. This desk is in remarkably good condition. The drawers work well and the doors close and lock. The elegant interior slide lock for the doors is present. I am sorry that I was limited to only 12 photos by eBay, as there are so many beautiful elements of this desk which cannot be illustrated because of those limitations. SMALL EARLY 1800'S ENGLISH MAHOGANY TABLETOP WRITERS DESK
Please see all of the photographs and read the complete description. Both the images and text are considered a full disclosure of condition. This writing desk came from a Massachusetts collection and is attributed to Modan and Company in London. England, in the early 1800's. It was created out of mahogany with mahogany secondary wood. The desk has the original cut crystal inkwells. In the center of the desk surface is a mother of pearl inset marked HNH to J.P.D. The key for the lower locking drawer is present and working. The separate key used for the upper document file has long since gone missing. It measures 14 3/4" wide x 12 1/4" deep x 10 7/8" high. The desk rests on four small bun feet, and the entire piece weighs 15.8 pounds. CONDTION: The desk is in remarkable condition considering it is perhaps over 180 years old. ... moreIt does have some use marks and tiny bumps and bruises as would be expected. It appears to have had some minor repairs over the years. Specifically to the hinges of the lift top covering the upper document storage area. Please note in photograph# 7 the left facing hinge has six screws{two of which are smaller than the others} This has resulted in the hinge being loose, as the two small screws move about in the larger holes of the hinge hardware. The lift top is still perfectly serviceable as it is, and the looseness of the hinge can easily be rectified by replacing the two screws with new brass screws. The right facing hinge{photograph# 8} has provision for only four screws because it is smaller in size than the original and the cut out to recess the hinge into the wood is larger. The lower drawer sides where they attach to the drawer front may have been repaired at some point. The cut crystal inkwells are in relatively good shape although there are some chips at the bases.
