The flame mahogany looks incredible. With a rich complexion and a pronounced grain that are sure to complement any setting. Each drawer is adorned with elegant solid brass pulls and features dovetailed joints. The writing surface is inlaid with rich brown leather bordered by gold tooling-which was replaced during a recent restoration that also included a new coat of hand-rubbed wax. In total, this desk features three drawers and two cabinets on one side, with seven standard drawers and a file drawer on the other. Conveniently this desk disassembles quite easily: like all pedestal desks, the top simply rests securely on the two pedestals. Some of the surfaces show some minor wear marks, particularly on the feet, but they are very minor indeed, so overall condition is excellent, especially for a desk from this period. The desk features ... morea gorgeous original finish and period hardware. There are four graduated drawers over flared french feet and shaped skirt. The drawer fronts have book-matched crotch mahogany veneers and cockbeading. The fitted interior(sorry for the dust) has burl walnut veneers, ebonized pulls and boxwood stringing. The interior cupboard door opens to reveal a drawer with a secret drawer behind. See photo) The desk measures 44" high by 39 1/2" wide by 20" deep. In overall very good condition. There is some minor loss to the veneer on the feet which we will restore for you. The desk lid is cupped which makes the desk impossible to lock properly though we do have a key. Made of rosewood, c. 1830- 1850. The canterbury is larger than most, measuring 24" tall, 26.5" wide, and 17" deep. It retains its original brass wheels. The form is quite unique and ornate, especially compared to the usual Georgian and Regency styles of the 1830s. The piece in excellent condition. With a fine rich rosewood finish. There is one old repair where a circular dowel was added, and another small square area where the wood was repaired. Both of these are insignificant and hard to detect. The old finish is very well preserved with lots of antique character- mars. Wear and shrinkage separations from age- see photos. Mahogany wood has delicate inlaid banding and warm patina. The top two drawers are false. They drop to form a desk top. This style of desk was often called a"butler's desk" in a large household, the butler was the head of staff and kept records in a desk like this. Inside is a natural saddle leather writing surface and contrasting golden drawers. All drawers have tiny hand cut dovetail joints. Partners' Desk- Antique English Mahogany -London- circa 1850
This over-sized partner's desk was made in England circa 1850. I found it in an antique store in 1974 and restored it. It served as my desk in my 40 years practicing law. And it never failed to draw compliments. It is the ingenious"pedestal" style, meaning that it consists of three pieces: 2 side pedestals(on concealed rollers) which contain locking drawers on one side and cabinets on the other, and the top which is inlaid leather. The top is grooved so as to fit perfectly atop the pedestals for a solid connection,yet easy moving. The tops of these desks were made of one solid piece of mahogany. As such, they are prone to crack along one line across the desktop. This was the case when I bought it. We repaired it and recovered the top using an ENTIRE cowhide. Just removed from local estate is this Rare 19th century English Architect Desk. On 4 legs with castor wheels. The top is covered with a beautiful gold tooled leather. There is one large drawer which features a desk interior. Fitted with a pair of removable ink jars with Sterling silver lids. There is one more narrow but long drawer on the other side. English Mahogany Schoolmaster's Antique Desk w/ Slanted Leather Top Late 19th Century w/ Ebonized Reeded Legs in the George III Style Item# 130009FPX20 This is a just lovely English Antique Schoolmaster's desk. Crafted in the late 19th Century of solid mahogany, mahogany veneers and pine secondaries. The slanted top provides a fine writing surface, covered in a warm-khaki tone tooled leather; lifting over original brass hinges, the interior retains what is probably an original blue paper liner and reveals a large storage space. Every aspect of the top is crafted with dovetails, from the tiny inkwells to the joinery of the entire slant front portion of the desk. Two small hand dovetailed drawers retain their original stamped brass hardware, framed in ebonized stringer inlays and retaining the same light blue papered liner. The desk ... morerests over boldly reeded and ebonized legs that terminate simply in stumped toes. Simply gorgeous for anyone decorating their home and looking for a great form in the hallway or entry way. A highly unique side table for a living room or a small writing desk to actually use for work and storage, this is a wonderful selection. The desk, 36" wide and 20 1/2" deep, is probably cherry with secondary woods of pine and oak. The substantial desk has a false top drawer over two small drawers over two graduated drawers.the fitted interior has two drawers on each side with a door middle and carved dividers.there is a hidden drawer for valuables. The top is dovetailed and a ledge is attached to the slant lid, probably for writing purposes. The brasses appear to be original, as are the locks. There is a possibility that the top drawer has been modified to create the hidden space in the interior.I'm pretty sure that the pull-outs to hold the lid have been replaced. At least one of the boards ... moreon the back has been replaced. The desk is quite dark and may be the original finish that needs a good cleaning and polish. Several of the drawer bottoms have been repaired due to wear.the drawers work well. There is a fairly deep mark on the lower part of the lid and some cracks on the top. This is an estate piece that has come down through the family(important, American descendants)the name of the family will be revealed to the buyer with provenance going back to the grandmother. I am selling the desk for the family and took photos on the present site in"as is" condition with no cleaning or polishing. It is petite and it is made with SOLID OAK. It has its original finish. The HUTCH and DESK DOORS have simple leaded glass fronts. It is accented with large nail head accents inside and outside down near the bottom of the desk. All the hardware is original. The approximate age of this desk is early late 1800- 1900's. It is in EXCELLENT CONDITION with the exception of the leather across the top has a small burn mark and the arch at the top of the hutch is missing one wood peg. Both of these imperfections can be fixed easily if you choose to do so. Please see pictures for a better visual descriptions. Made from a lovely dark walnut wood and covered with a red leather writing surface. This desk is quite the find! Two easily opening drawers provide some storage in this desk. They are constructed with hand cut dovetails which are a sign of authenticity and quality. Each drawer ... morefeatures a unique brass handle. Locks are present but there is no key. Four turned legs are connected via a lovely turned stretcher which adds beauty and stability to this antique writing desk. Four brass casters at the bottom provide the ability to roll the desk short distances. One of the more unusual and attractive feature of the desk are the quarter round accents on the sides of the desk. Just under the top. Fluted lines can be found on these accents, the drawers, and all over the legs and stretcher. This fluted line style was one of may used in the Victorian period. This desk was originally made in England around 1890 and is rated in good condition. It is sturdy and stable. There are numerous dings and dents throughout the top and drawer fronts of varying sizes. None of these are more than cosmetic and to most people they serve to add character to the antique writing desk. We have tried to include pictures that give a good sampling of these marks. Beautifully carved top crown on bookcase with old"wavy" glass doors in excellent condition(no chips, cracks or breaks) Original key included.
