The desk is in amazing condition, overall, but does have some light surface ... morescratches and wear from general use, particularly at the edge of the chair opening, most likely from the chair bumping into it in this area. I am unsure of the exact age of the desk. It is most likely a 1970's reproduction of an 18th Century Georgian Design. It has beautifully carved ball and claw feet, and chunky cabiole legs that are also carved at the knees. This desk has five (5) substantial drawers with the original brass bail pull handles, and five (5) faux drawer fronts on the back side also with brass bail pull handles. The drawers have dove tail joints. The desk was in front of a window for years, and therefore the finish on the back side is a bit faded.

The desk retains the original photograph from when it was retailed by Jacques Bodart, Inc. during the first quarter of the 20th Century, noting this as#1681. It is a gorgeous piece, the original gilt highlighted tooled green leather preserved in remarkable condition, framed in well patinated molded mahogany over five drawers. The desk rests over four tapered and stop-fluted legs with square brass caps over each leg and terminating in plain brass capped feet. Jacques Bodart. Made in two parts from perfectly matched mahogany and inlaid with boxwood. Spade feet. The top section is 33 inches high to the finial and the bottom section is 40.5 inches high. The total height is 73.5 inches. It is 29.75 inches wide. 16 inches deep, and 30 inches high to the writing surface, which is 21.75 inches deep when open. The lid measures 12 inches when closed. There are eight interior drawers, one door and several ledger compartments. The bottom has three serpentine drawers over three smaller serpentine drawers. This solid wood lap desk was made to hold up to heavy use. Probably for a Military Officer. A Traveling Official, or a Businessman that required a durable portable desk. Closed it measured 15 in. by 10 in. and 6 in. high. When opened it had a 13 ½ in. 5 ¾ in. writing surface and with another flip of the top would become a 13 ½ in. by 13 ½ in. surface. Circa Fourth Quarter of the 19th Century Item# 1408AWV10S This is a wonderful find. Crafted entirely with period techniques, tools and fasteners during the Centennial era of the late 19th Century. It is one of the truest representations of the Boston Kneehole Desk we've seen from this era, the craftsmanship positively impeccable. The dense mahogany planks for the top and sides of the case present a marvelous display of swirling grains and symmetry. Likewise, the boards used for the drawers have a fine swirling that augments the bow of each drawer to create a sense of greater bend and depth than actually present in the wood. The top is crafted of two planks of mahogany thumb molded of the solid, conforming to the ... morecase and projecting softly over all three sides- it affixes to the case by sliding onto dovetails along the sides, allowing the top to expand and contract over time without threat of splitting. The front of the desk features a broad single drawer over three graduated drawers on either side, flanking a single hidden drawer over the tombstone kneehole door. All drawers are crafted with great skill, the dovetails precise and perfect at each joint, the bottoms set perpendicular to the frame and affixed with tacks around all edges beneath applied runners on the sides. They retain their original hardware and working locks. The drawer bottoms, like much of the desk, are sawn by hand and lightly planed by hand- the kerf marks of the uneven saw are evident throughout these secondary surfaces. The feet are untouched and entirely original, the blocking still intact and in place other than a single missing corner block. An original Boston Kneehole desk would be beyond prohibitive in pricing- this fine object is as close to the original as is otherwise possible. Offered here is an excellent antique 19th century English secretary desk. This desk is in very good antique condition. It stands 87" high. Is 44" wide at the widest point and 22" deep. Each side of the base is built with a single 22" mahogany board. The desk features an interior fitted with 6 small drawers, a locking(key included) door interior compartment, and flanking that, 2"hidden" vertical pull out cash and document compartments which are disguised as books.
