This is most likely late 18th, early 19th century, but possibly Civil War era. These first started to appear in the last decades of the 18th Century. This particular Desk isn't as ornate as many of the writing desks that I have seen here on ebay. Or online. This one seems to have been made purely for it's practical purpose. It shows it's age. But is still in good solid shape. It does have a few stains though. But. I guess it could possibly be refinished. French Louis XVI Style Bonheur Du Jour 19th Century Antique Cylinder Top Desk
French Louis XVI Style Bonheur Du Jour Antique Writing Desk France c. 1890-1910. Mahogany Veneers with Brass Stringer Inlay Cylindrical Top Desk with Mechanical Movement Item# 120012OWP03 This is a simply gorgeous French Louis XVI style Bonheur Du Jour Cylinder Top Antique Desk. A wonderful visual accomplishment. This desk revives the Napoleonic tastes of the late 18th Century, in every way capturing the Neoclassical taste for clean lines and stoic structure juxtaposed with lavish ornamentation. Mounted with precisely executed brass and bronze hardware and embellishments, the desk is mutually reserved and royal. Crafted almost entirely by hand, this is a stunning and highly complex work, using gorgeous mahogany veneers to cover all visible surfaces of the desk. The cylinder top has an interesting mechanism whereby the opening of the lower ... moredrawer opens the roll top. Once the cylinder top is opened. The desk lid is accessible, now easily opened to lay supported on the open drawer- this reveals an original tooled black and gilt leather writing surface, three small hand dovetailed drawers, a pen rest flanked by inkwell cubbies and a storage space inside. Resting over that are three larger drawers. Again each hand dovetailed with solid mahogany secondary woods, the bottom of each drawer chamfered along the sides to rabbet into the frame and nailed at the back with tiny nails. A curious inscription on the pine beneath the middle top drawer is a possible attribution to it's maker, an upside-down V with an S scrolled inside- the same inscription appears in very large proportions on the backboard as viewed by removing the top drawers and peering back into the antique french desk. The interior is inscrutable unfortunately. Much of it being locked up with the dust boards, roll top and lower drawer that is not removable. Each drawer is framed in brass tubular molding around the gilt bronze drawer hardware. The top is a piece of mottled red and cream marble. This is a great antique 19th century French slant front desk with excellent craftsmanship shown in the carving work and the lid where you can see the hand planing that was done to the piece. The hardware is all original on this piece but the leather has been replaced. This is a late 18 th or early 19 th century desk that has wonderful fruitwood inlay. It is European. The central theme of the inlay is fruit baskets with flowers around them. The drop front has a couple of birds on the flowers. The piece is 46” across. 45 ¼” high and 24” deep. There are 3 drawers on the inside and under the drawers are removable pieces that hide hidden compartments. There are 3 large drawers on the front. The piece has bracket feet. We have 3 keys to the piece that may be original. There are a couple of repairs to the top of the drop front which we have pictured. There is a crack on the drop front that is about 9 inches long. Antique Late 19th Century Walnut Secretary Desk Original Hardware England
This antique secretary in solid walnut and burled walnut veneers came to us from England c1880. It is in beautiful condition and boasts three adjustable shelves(spaced at 2 ½” apart) in the upper unit along with the original glass front doors. There is a key for the upper cabinet and it works in the lock. But the locking mechanism does not work(missing the catch) There are some surface scratches to the bottom of the upper cabinet and also to the writing surface. Solid brass teardrop knobs complete the drawers which vary in depth(top at 4 ¾” middle at 6 ½” and the bottom drawer at 8 ½” Drawer fronts are a burled walnut veneer in excellent condition. Overall height is 85 ½” and the bottom section is 36”w x 19 ¾”d with the pull down substantial writing surface at 35 ½”w x 23”d(there are narrow panels on either ... moreside of the lower unit that pull out and support the writing surface) There seems to be some very slight delamination of the burled walnut veneer on the pull down panel– this is not noticeable unless scrutinized up close and should probably be left as is(refer to photos) as it does not affect the integrity of the piece. There are some slots for mail and smaller drawers as well that have the original brass knobs. The upper section is 34 12”w x 9 ¾”d. It comes apart in two pieces for ease of transport. French Louis XVI Secrétaire à Abattant 19th Century. Carved Fruitwood w/ Marble Top Item# 120010TTT02 This gorgeous drop-lid carved fruitwood desk. Featuring a pierced brass gallery wrapping around shaped marble with turret corners over fluted fruitwood pillars with brass mounts. The drawer has original brass hardware with a strong lock in the middle, the keyhole a four-leaf clover lock guard, limiting the keys that can access the hole- this lock mechanism is mirrored on the drop-lid and on the pair of cabinet doors. The lid drops to reveal six small drawers and a few cubby-holes, all of the drawers hand dovetailed front and back, the bottoms bevelled to rabbet into the sides. The lower cabinet opens to reveal a locking box, key absent, the box somewhat destabalized due to a missing block on the right side. Samuel Collection No reserve fine art auctions Overview: This is an original antique 19th century campaign chest. I do not see any makers marks and I am not an antique furniture expert. Any help on this piece appreciated! Condition: This chest is sold"as is. Needs repairs and a restoration. Appears to be missing hinges. The lid is detached as shown. I do not have a key for the lock. The metal strip needs to be re-attached to the front. There are lots of scratches. Scuffs and wear. This would be a great project or sold for parts. Measurements: Measures 21.5 x 17.5 x 9.5 inches.

Antique 19th Century Sea Captains Lap Desk - Writing Desk - Inlay - Escucheons
Here for bid is a 19th century folding lap travel desk. I was told that this size of box was often used by sea captains saving room in there tight state rooms. Maybe just a theory not sure. I would consider this box desk in pretty good condition for its age and compared to others I have seen. However as you can see in the provided photos it is not perfect and has wear. Nicks, cracks and chips that one would expect to see in this old of a piece. It needs inkwell replacement so forth and so on. I have no key for this desk but they are easily found. Some of the brass or copper inlay has been tacked a few small pieces missing. This type of scowling inlay is very hard to find for they took a lot of skill and work to make I am sure. This is a Governor Winthrop style slant front desk with drawers. The desk stands 43 inches tall and measures 38 inches wide by 21 inches deep, front to back. The writing surface itself is 36 inches wide by 21 inches, front to back and within the desk itself there are 16 small drawers and an additional cubby with lovely inlay door as shown in my photographs. French Louis XVI Style Cylinder Top Writing Desk c. 19th Century Item# 130009GFL22 This is a gorgeous little treasure; crafted during the 19th Century. This French Louis XVI Style Ladies Writing Desk features a Cylinder Roll top that functions in conjunction with the opening of the single drawer. This effectively allows you to lock the desk and all contents with a single lock, because with the drawer being locked there is no access to the roll top; with the roll top being closed, the slant front is unable to open and the compartment beneath is sealed. The desk does not come with it's key, though these keys are often not difficult to come by. Retaining a warm cognac-mahogany tone throughout, a patina slowly developing under many layers of wax, the piece is delightful to look upon. The slant front drops to reveal a pink-red tone leather ... morewriting surface with gilt highlights, this likely a replacement. The back of this lifts to reveal a storage compartment. Three small hand dovetailed drawers with brass molding rest beneath a pair of inkwells flanking the concave pen channel. The embellishments are typical to the Louis XVI form, the rectangular reeded panels flanking the cylinder top and decorating each corner closely keeping with the angularity of the piece. The desk rests over turned, tapered and fluted legs that terminate in brass capped feet. A handsome piece in every regard. Just removed from local estate is this Rare 19th century English Architect Desk. On 4 legs with castor wheels. The top is covered with a beautiful gold tooled leather. There is one large drawer which features a desk interior. Fitted with a pair of removable ink jars with Sterling silver lids. There is one more narrow but long drawer on the other side. Two sides have a pair of great candle stands that pull out. Top it seld is adjustable, it has a support legs below, that help you set the incline to your liking. SOLID WALNUT W/ BURL WALNUT FRONT ANTIQUE WALL MOUNTED DESK CABINET 1880'S-1890'S FOLD OUT SHELVES& WRITING SURFACE It really is hard to know where to start with this Antique piece. It is a gorgeous piece of furniture! The solid Walnut is in wonderful condition given the age of this piece. This is truly Unique. I have spent at least a couple of hours trying to research this piece or find one like it-I have not been able to find another like it! It is made of Solid Walnut. The wood has aged and seasoned beautifully. It was a true Craftsman that created this piece. The front is a Burl Walnut. Inside. There are five separate shelves. Two are removable. Three are attached to an arm and they swing forward and out. The desk surface has a track where two other arms come out and support the surface. These are of brass. The surface of ... morethe writing area is covered with velvet that was the covering of choice during that era. It is in Good to Very Good condition for the age. It does have some spots and stains on it. This is bordered with a veneer that I am not sure was wood or paper. It has peeled off in a couple of places, but is still in generally good condition. There are doors on each side of the piece that open up to reveal two small shelves on each side. These are the only thing that may not be original, but they may. They are a curved triangle. They do need to be glued in-I would say back in, but they do not look as if they were glued originally. I believe they were cut to fit very snugly without glue, but they would need to be glued to use with anything that has weight to it. The cabinet measures appx. 28" in width. 26" in height, 6" deep. The fold out writing surface comes out appx. 18" It weighs about 25 lbs. We will package it VERY carefully and would send it insured where applicable. English Mahogany Schoolmaster's Antique Desk w/ Slanted Leather Top Late 19th Century w/ Ebonized Reeded Legs in the George III Style Item# 130009FPX20 This is a just lovely English Antique Schoolmaster's desk. Crafted in the late 19th Century of solid mahogany, mahogany veneers and pine secondaries. The slanted top provides a fine writing surface, covered in a warm-khaki tone tooled leather; lifting over original brass hinges, the interior retains what is probably an original blue paper liner and reveals a large storage space. Every aspect of the top is crafted with dovetails, from the tiny inkwells to the joinery of the entire slant front portion of the desk. Two small hand dovetailed drawers retain their original stamped brass hardware, framed in ebonized stringer inlays and retaining the same light blue papered liner. The desk ... morerests over boldly reeded and ebonized legs that terminate simply in stumped toes. Simply gorgeous for anyone decorating their home and looking for a great form in the hallway or entry way. A highly unique side table for a living room or a small writing desk to actually use for work and storage, this is a wonderful selection. With a warm patina and mellowing of the mahogany surfaces, remaining in quite wonderful condition throughout, this is a piece you will cherish for a lifetime. It is possible the piece was originally crafted mostly during the early 19th Century and was re-fashioned slightly or at least restored during the late 19th Century- there is some curious work with the dowel restorations around the drawer blades. The lack of matching between the screw wells in the frame to the underside of the slant front desk(though we have not attempted to remove the slant front to truly examine this) As such, it should be assumed as a late 19th Century work of simply gorgeous form, but should not be collected as pure or without alteration. This is a beautiful and rare piece. It is a 19th century and I was told possibly 18th century French desk that was painted and gilded to be free standing as the design is also in the back. It has lovely lines and it is beautifully painted with flowers and medallions. The dimensions of this desk is 39 inches high x 24 inches wide and the depth is 16 inches. the interior is painted a reddish color. Antique 19th Century Schoolmaster's Desk
Pictured is a Schoolmaster's Desk from 1850-1870 according to the person I bought it from eight years ago. All the antique experts I had look at that piece agreed with the age estimate. As you can see from the pictures. It has been used and is a charming piece. It is made of mixed hardwoods. The top folds up and exposes little compartments and drawers. It also has a writing surface that pulls out. I don't have the keys to any of the drawers but it wouldn't be hard to find one or have one made. Dimensions are 41 inches tall, 41 inches wide and 22 inches deep. This piece works particularly well as a dedicated desk in which to keep household bills, greeting cards and address books.

Purchased this 19th Century Sugar Desk about 20 years ago. I was told that the sugar was put in top and the drawer was for utensils. The dovetails are gorgeous! The box and drawer are all dovetailed. The drawer has the original knob. The lock is sill in the drawer. The entire sugar desk originally had a red lining. But over time only the drawer has the red lining. A Sugar Desk, also known as a Traveling Sugar Desk, was taken with you when traveling since sugar was such a valuable item in the early 19th century. This beautiful box could be used as a keepsake box or just sitting on a desk for show. It has such a substantial presents, it would be stunning placed alone on a shelf. Antique 19th C 1870's Victorian Walnut Leather Top Kneehole Writing Table Desk
This Auction is for an Antique 19th Century Approximately 1870's Victorian Walnut Kneehole Writing Table Desk. It measures 31 1/4" tall by 43" wide by 28" deep- it has five drawers with what appears to be its original turned wood handles- it has hand dovetailed drawers and is square nailed- the finish is either original or an old refinish- the leather top I believe is an old replacement- this is a chunky solid very well made piece of furniture- it has some minor use wear on the finish. Another unique item from Indelible Curiosities Antique Early 19th C Brass Mahogany Lap Desk w/Hoffer Docs Fnd In Hidden Drawers Description: This lap desk contains no ordinary so-called"hidden" drawers! We purchased this at an auction only to discover when we brought it home that this mahogany with brass inlay lap desk has a hidden locking mechanism which when released springs a thin board off the inside of the desk revealing two small drawers. Like something out of a treasure hunter's dream. The hunt did not end there for when we opened the drawers we found- no, not gold coins(darn it) but several folded documents all from the early 1800s! There are four papers in total. One of which is the original instructions for opening the secret compartment, the other three are all related to one person, Selina Hoffer a.k.a. Selina James ... moreand later as Selina Hall(the latter two are her married names) Two are her original marriage certificates dated 1825 and 1834 and the third is a less formal all handwritten original document stating who, where, and when(August 26, 1794) Selina was baptized. We have scanned these separately into one pdf file and will include the original documents as well as print-outs for the buyer(happy to provide the pdf files as well) Please note the last image is of all four scanned images of the papers but combined using Adobe Photoshop into one image- this is not representative of our scanned pdf files as we did those scanning each paper separately. We will include the objects we found in the two inkwells: orange pellets which are possibly ink pellets intended to be dissolved in water and a broken into two pieces red hard somewhat flat rectangular object with what appears to be some black ink on it- possibly also dissolves or is meant for mixing ink. Antique French Roll Top Carved Desk 19th Century Beautiful
Up for auction this week is a nice 19th century French roll-top desk that I purchased from an antique furniture dealer on eBay three years ago. I must sell this desk to make space in my office for other furniture. I am not a furniture expert in an sense of the word. But can assure you this piece is late Victorian and original. The desk appears to have a burl mahogany veneer, but it is difficult for me to tell whether the wood is mahogany. I suspect it might in fact be walnut. The desk is in overall fair-good condition for its age. There are many spots where there have been nicks, dings, and scratches(all commensurate with age) and you can probably notice many of them in my photo gallery. The previous owner attempted to clumsily color in a few areas of missing wood with a modern repair'pen' There are also ink stains in one of the secretary ... moredrawers where the pens were likely stored by previous owners over the years. Nevertheless, the desk is still solid, beautiful, and functional after many, many years of service. It is a magnificent example of late victorian period furniture. The desk has its original hardware and came with a plethora of keys. The keys work and lock the cabinets in the upper gallery, but they do not seem to be able to lock the drawers in the desk proper. This desk has ample space for storage as you can hopefully see from my photographs. If you have a home or an apartment with limited space, one bit of good news is that this desk is comprised of three separate pieces for ease of transport; the large base, the roll-top, and the upper gallery/curio cabinet. The overall height of the piece is 72 inches, and the maximum width of the piece is 46 inches. Interestingly, the desk also has two leather-top side leaves on either side that extend outward another 20 inches. This desk is fully functional with a very nice leather-top writing surface that extends outward to allow a greater work space.
