French Louis XVI Style Bonheur Du Jour 19th Century Antique Cylinder Top Desk
French Louis XVI Style Bonheur Du Jour Antique Writing Desk France c. 1890-1910. Mahogany Veneers with Brass Stringer Inlay Cylindrical Top Desk with Mechanical Movement Item# 120012OWP03 This is a simply gorgeous French Louis XVI style Bonheur Du Jour Cylinder Top Antique Desk. A wonderful visual accomplishment. This desk revives the Napoleonic tastes of the late 18th Century, in every way capturing the Neoclassical taste for clean lines and stoic structure juxtaposed with lavish ornamentation. Mounted with precisely executed brass and bronze hardware and embellishments, the desk is mutually reserved and royal. Crafted almost entirely by hand, this is a stunning and highly complex work, using gorgeous mahogany veneers to cover all visible surfaces of the desk. The cylinder top has an interesting mechanism whereby the opening of the lower ... moredrawer opens the roll top. Once the cylinder top is opened. The desk lid is accessible, now easily opened to lay supported on the open drawer- this reveals an original tooled black and gilt leather writing surface, three small hand dovetailed drawers, a pen rest flanked by inkwell cubbies and a storage space inside. Resting over that are three larger drawers. Again each hand dovetailed with solid mahogany secondary woods, the bottom of each drawer chamfered along the sides to rabbet into the frame and nailed at the back with tiny nails. A curious inscription on the pine beneath the middle top drawer is a possible attribution to it's maker, an upside-down V with an S scrolled inside- the same inscription appears in very large proportions on the backboard as viewed by removing the top drawers and peering back into the antique french desk. The interior is inscrutable unfortunately. Much of it being locked up with the dust boards, roll top and lower drawer that is not removable. Each drawer is framed in brass tubular molding around the gilt bronze drawer hardware. The top is a piece of mottled red and cream marble. It is a gorgeous piece, the original gilt highlighted tooled green leather preserved in remarkable condition, framed in well patinated molded mahogany over five drawers. Featuring a pierced brass gallery wrapping around shaped marble with turret corners over fluted fruitwood pillars with brass mounts. The drawer has original brass hardware with a strong lock in the middle, the keyhole a four-leaf clover lock guard, limiting the keys that can access the hole- this lock mechanism is mirrored on the drop-lid and on the pair of cabinet doors. The lid drops to reveal six small drawers and a few cubby-holes, all of the drawers hand dovetailed front and back, the bottoms bevelled to rabbet into the sides. The lower cabinet opens to reveal a locking box, key absent, the box somewhat destabalized due to a missing block on the right side. The drawers are all dove tailed joined indicating earlier era construction and show aged wood inside. Here's what I stated about this gorgeous cabinet's condition: One wood split crack and chip of inlaid veneer marquetry on front middle of bottom drawer. The drawers have some resistance when pulling out. But the can be pulled out completely and fairly easily, but just have some snug fit little tug drag to them, as does the slide out writing desk platform, but not at all a problem and just not real easy and loose pulling out. Some minor surfaces scratches, but other than these remarkably well preserved and beautiful condition dovetail joined antique writing desk cabinet. This French Louis XVI Style Ladies Writing Desk features a Cylinder Roll top that functions in conjunction with the opening of the single drawer. This effectively allows you to lock the desk and all contents with a single lock, because with the drawer being locked there is no access to the roll top; with the roll top being closed, the slant front is unable to open and the compartment beneath is sealed. The desk does not come with it's key, though these keys are often not difficult to come by. Retaining a warm cognac-mahogany tone throughout, a patina slowly developing under many layers of wax, the piece is delightful to look upon. The slant front drops to reveal a pink-red tone leather ... morewriting surface with gilt highlights, this likely a replacement. The back of this lifts to reveal a storage compartment. Antique FRENCH 19th C Learther Top LOUIS PHILIPPE DESK Bronze BUREAUPLAT XV XVI
Just removed from New York City Estate. We have a pleasure to offer you this beautiful antique French 19th century bronze mounted leather top desk. The piece is more than impressive, large size, great style, top quality of materials used, and top of the line work! Top surface is covered with light brown/ olive leather. With tooled gold edges(please see the photos) Front of the desk has four drawers, wide center one, two drawers on the left side, and a large one to the left, which appears as two on the left side but it is connected. Inside the right drawer is a secret"safe" compartment with it's own separate lock and key. Each drawer is fitted with it's own antique functioning lock. Drawers are dovetailed beautifully! Secondary wood is the high quality(see photos) Back of the desk looks the same way as the front, just without ... moredrawers or key holes. Stands on four stylish reeded straight legs, grooves lined with bronze, ending in lovely large bronze saboe cups. Piece has a spectacular appearance, as the photos will attest. The desk is in good condition. Light light wear on the leather from use, it was taken care of very well by the previous owners, polished over before the sale. It is my great pleasure to offer you this one of a kind diamond fresh from Larchmont NY Estate! You have a once in a lifetime chance to own this museum quality. One of a kind antique French 19th century bronze mounted Malachite Bureauplat Desk. Piece is beyond phenomenal, great size, style and quality of materials and work! Desk is made out of different materials. The base is a 19th century wood structure. That was period covered with a thick layer of malachite veneer. The top is an actual marble/ slate slab that was covered with a layer of malachite. All of this beauty was then magnified with miles of highest quality dore bronze ormolu mounts. Front of the desk has three drawers, each with it's own ormolu mounted handle, I beg of you to see the closeup of the photo. Drawers are dovetailed in the back, and secondary wood is the high quality ... moremahogany. Back of the desk looks the same way as the front, just without drawers. Top surface has a bronze band running all around the edges. Stands on four high stylishly curved legs. With bronze running down the entire length, ending in lovely dore bronze paw foot saboe shoes. Legs are done all around. Piece has a spectacular appearance! The desk is in good condition. Minor wear on the from use, a flea bite here and there, but it was taken care of very well by the previous owners. Size is large 50" wide, 26" deep front to back, and 31" in height, with ample legroom height. Beautiful French kidney-shaped desk with flame mahogany detail; gorgeous patina. Estimate turn of the century or early 20th C. You can see the hand-cut dovetailing. Very good to excellent condition w/ age-commensurate wear; I try to cover everything in great detail so there are no surprises: part of back right foot has been repaired; not noticeable unless closely scrutinizing. Left front foot also repaired(photo) Neither repair involved or affected the structural integrity or sturdiness of the piece whatsoever; were cosmetic only. And quite tough to spot unless you looking for it. Bottom left drawer handle is missing(escutcheon still there) but a replacement of this age/patina can probably readily be located.
