Here is a fantastic find.an antique SOLID walnut slant front desk probably from the Pennsylvania area circa 1830 to possibly 1850. The walnut has a deep and beautiful grain and patina. All of the drawers are inlaid with satinwood stringing, each drawer is hand dovetailed, the brass hardware pulls and escutcheons are original, the hidden drawer is shaped and in the interior section behind small door, bracket feet are original, secondary wood is pine and the back boards of pine are hand planed. Brass corner pieces on the top and front side, original brass hinges and lock, original blue felt writing surface with two storage compartments underneath. The lock and key work properly and the hinges are undamaged. Some Starkey desks have a paper tag with the manufacturer's information. I believe This desk was made sometime in the 1800s. It's 100% hand carved. It does not appear to be a replica to look old. It has many makers mistakes hidden inside its drawers and the underneath(bottom) of the desk seems to have much age wear on it as if it has been taken very good care of but still needed some repairing along the way. I wish I knew more of the story behind this beautiful desk but it was bought at an estate sale so I do not. Antique Italian Inlaid Marquetry Burl Fruitwood Slant Fall Front Desk c 1800s
Exquisite antique continental slant or fall front desk. Made with intricate inlaid marquetry featuring striking burl fruitwoods. This small decorative piece was likely intended as a ladies' writing desk. The fall front opens to reveal a writing surface as well as two cubbies, two drawers and a tiny cabinet with door. There are two drawers below the writing surface, each with consecutive concave sections, scrollwork inlay and ornate meta pulls. The bottom portion features a carved skirt and graceful cabriole legs ending in trifid feet. Overall the desk is in good antique condition. With some wear and minor crackling to the surfaces. Incredibly detailed hand carving on the drop down front as well as very nicely carved throughout the front. Claw feet legs. An appraiser from the Antiques Road Show stated it was an English piece from the early 1800s or late 1700s. However the scene looks like the men are possibly spanish. She stated that if the bookshelf that should be on top were there it would be worth around $5000, but as is it should be worth between $3,000& $4000. Really, very nice piece. I believe it is mahogany, but I'm not an expert on wood. The scene carved into the drop down piece appears to be soldiers on horses helping to corral women& children to get to safety. Antique writing box with lots of inlaid with inlay depicting a sea shell on top. The box has drop side handles and a side drawer for papers. Inside there is a covered writing surface and further compartments for papers and writing implements. The box has a riser mechanism. The drop side handles are a feature of early boxes. Just found at an estate sale here in Boston a really really nice and completely original American Federal 1820s writing desk with side drawer. Nice Period inkwells. Amazing condition for being almost 200 years old. Nice period piece and very hard to find. All of the hinges are strong including the writing compartments. Nice ivory inlay on the skeleton key face and a wonderful lock mechanism. I've been told this is military because of all of the brass reinforcements. I think it still could be a desk for very wealthy individuals. the very long drawer pulls out smoothly and on very solid condition. Great dove tailing and nice chamfered areas on the drawers backside. Both ends have a drawer handle but only one opens it up. The writing surface blotter board looks original. What makes this piece really unique is the secret slide drawer compartment. It can be opened by opening the case and then taking the brass rod out of the left side of the box that"locks" it in place. The previous owner was an Elizabeth M Updike from Princeton NY. The famous writer. John Updike, had a daughter named Elizabeth, ... morebut correspondence is too old to have been hers. Possibly and earlier family member as John was born in 1932. There are some wedding invitations from the early 1900s in this drawer, a letter that has Princeton 66 on it. Not sure if year, for 1966 or means something else. There is a letter to a Mr. E. M. Updike in the drawer as well from a Turnbull that accompanied a Liberty Bond Medal for WWI efforts in gather funds for the war effort(Princeton NJ Victory Liberty Loan Committee) It probably meant Mrs. but you know the government, they can't even get the sex of a party right in correspondence, eh? Another piece of paper with genealogical information on it talking about Updike's grandfather Samuel Montgomery(1816-1878) married to a Matilda Stockton. Also a mention of a Samuel Updike and his children in this same piece. Also correspondence to Elizabeth Updike in 1927 from Wm Ball& Sons in West Chester. PA. Price lists and pictures of hardware which me thinks was probably to address the missing handle on the one side of the lap desk. ENGLISH made burr Walnut writing slope lap desk from the victorian era approx 1860-1880.lots of inlay. It is in fantastic condition and ready to use. It has had its leather writing surface replaced at some point in its life. Looks good. There have been repairs done in bits on the sides of box.nothing terribly bad and not terribly noticeable. felt on bottom has been replaced. The ink well comparment on one side has dividers and due to a bit of wood shrinkage. They will fall but they stay put if you put them in place and set the lap desk somewhere.the hidden comparment is missing the long piece of wood that has the trigger mechanism on it to hide the 3 drawers.it doesnt take away from the charm or beauty of it.one tiny drawer knob is missing.over all, its in great usable, sturdy condition.ready to be used to write your letters.i have 3 and ... moream keeping two.hard to let one go but i dont write enough letters to justify keeping 3. What makes this piece really unique is the secret compartment with 2 small drawers. There is a board that runs the length of the case just under the inkwell and pen holder section. The secret compartment board still in place and you Just push down on right side and it springs out. Amazing that it is all there and still works. All still there behind the secret panel and there are white bone knobs on each drawer. My guess is this pieces dates to the early to ... moremid 1800s. You be the judge before buying. This lap desk is beautiful with only small surface scratches. The corners have brass corner pieces. One of the leather pieces needs re gueing but i am leaving that too the new owner. Very nice wood and graining. The inside folding pieces are still all there as well. The lock and latch is there and comes with a key that operates the lock. That does not happen very often with a piece of this one's age anymore. The top of the desk has leather dark material on it which is hard and shows some wear. Both sides of the lap desk open for storage. Has open areas for two ink bottles in the well areas. One on the left and one on the right. Very RARE that both ink wells are with the piece obviously one had red ink and the other black. And a storage area for the pens that has a wood cover. Two other storage areas between the pen area and ink holder, The brass top piece is in place, cannot see any engraving on it and the brass piece around the lock keyhole is also in place. This solid wood lap desk was made to hold up to heavy use. Probably for a Military Officer. A Traveling Official, or a Businessman that required a durable portable desk. Closed it measured 15 in. by 10 in. and 6 in. high. When opened it had a 13 ½ in. 5 ¾ in. writing surface and with another flip of the top would become a 13 ½ in. by 13 ½ in. surface. Made with solid Mahogany using hand cut dovetailed joints, it has Brass Handles recessed into the sides. Overall condition is good with wood patches in the back and along the inside edge. At some time in the past the felt was replaced and the leather hinges on the interior compartments are torn with the felt now supporting the writing surface. Google North Adams/Hoosac Tunnel) This solid oak desk measures- 7 feet X 30 inches and stands 49 inches to the top of the border rail which is 3 inches with a 2 inch cap. The surface is slanted and the 2 1/2 inch drop/slope starts at 8 1/2 inches from front of desk and stops 21 inches down at a'pencil stop' piece of small well-rounded oak molding. The 4 drawers along the top are all 16 inches wide-3 deep and 23" long-one of them is a coin drawer*see photos) One side column consists of five 14 1/2 inch drawers all 5" deep and 23 long. The other column has a 24 inch'roll top' section X 14 wide followed by a bottom drawer also 5" deep and 23 long. Antique American Mahogany Writing Desk Bureau with Brass Handles Made in 1800s
This is a very nice very heavy Desk Bureau made in USA circa 1820. There are a few little repairs to the flap but the rest of the desk is pretty good. The colors is a brown and slightly reddish. The drawers and the flap has satinwood string inlay. There are small areas were some is missing, it sits on splayed feet and has brass handles which may not be the original ones. The back and the drawer linings again are all original with dovetail joints to the drawers. Its fitted with 2 envelope drawers to the interiors and many small drawers with a few small brass handles missing. But we will try and find these before its sold. The slides work fine to support the flap. Measurements are 42 wide 20 deep. 43 high. Antique Eastlake Walnut Secretary Desk - Late 1800s
This is an Eastlake secretary from the late 1800s. I think. It's solid wood construction, mostly walnut with walnut burl panels, very tasteful Eastlake geometric details, original wavy glass and beautiful original patina. Three adjustable shelves in the top book case; drop-down writing surface with original felt, two drawers, file bins and pigeon holes; one fixed self in the base. The two locks work with a replacement key, but they are a little sticky, and one of the rosettes that covers the writing panel pivot is missing. Measures: 42 x 85 x 11.5 top, 20 base. I bought this from a private party in DC about 20 years ago and now I'm downsizing a bit, so I hope it finds a good home. This is a mid 19th century leather covered campaign lap desk that was typically used by civil war officers and others. The leather cover is missing from the top front edge and part of the top side edge(see pics) The cloth pulls on the writing surfaces inside are also missing and have been replace by paper pulls. Otherwise. The desk is complete. There are numerous scratches and dings in the finish and there is no key for the lock. In the closed position, the desk measures 8 and 7/8 inches by 12 and 7/8 inches by 4 and 1/2 inches. The opened desk measures 12 and 7/8 inches by 18 inches. nice estate find a 1800s lap desk crazy with mother of pearl inlay on the top this thing has been around for a long time i think the wood might be ebony i am not sure it has some damage to the coners so look at the pics good it show wear all over but is a neat old part of history the velvet show wear inside and has crackling of the black paint all over has a little ink bottle in it also could you think about pulling this out to use instead of your hp laptop who know what they will be useing 150 years from now its 15 1/2 inches by 12 inches by 4 3/4 inches. Fine antique French or Biedermeier style Secretary 1800s beautiful wood grain
We purchased this wonderful piece in south boston. Virginia. It is 84 inches tall, 22 inches deep, 38 inches wide. The wood is like a birdseye grain but it could me a more exoticwood. It is really beautiful. The piece is in very good condition. The desk lid misses completely closing ever so slightly. I have shown this but it does not detract in any way. Because of the ebonized accent, I call it a biedermeier style. I believe it is from the 1800s. Please arrange pickup south of richmond. Exact address to the buyer upon sale.

1800s Antique Schoolmasters Desk Cherry and Tiger Maple w/ Functional Flat Top
This circa 1850 Antique Desk is 35 ½ in. high. With the gallery, and has a 32 ½ in. writing surface. The width is 38 ½ in. and the depth is 24 ¼ in. The top is level not tilted; this makes for a versatile table like surface. It is made of Cherry with a Tiger Maple drawer front. Hand cut dovetails were used on the gallery and drawer. It has had a recent restoration with replaced bottoms on the two left hand legs, reglueing the frame, and repairing some losses on the wood surface. An overcoat was added to the old finish without removing the aged patina of marks, stains, and color of the wood surface. There is a small chip at the bottom left hand side of the gallery. Overall it is in good sturdy condition for a piece over 150 years old. Please look at the photographs as they are considered part of the description.
