The interior cupboard door opens to reveal a drawer with a secret drawer behind. See photo) The desk measures 44" high by 39 1/2" wide by 20" deep. In overall very good condition. There is some minor loss to the veneer on the feet which we will restore for you. The desk lid is cupped which makes the desk impossible to lock properly though we do have a key. I don't think we want to try to address this particular issue but please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have. There is also some cracking of the veneer on the lid but it is all stable, nothing loose. The desk has great color and patination and is guaranteed to be as described. There are dividers inside the box and I don't know what it's original purpose was for. There is a brass pin on the right hand side that must be lifted or removed to allow the drawer in the base to slide out. Not really hidden but locks. I don't know if this was the original"knob" on the little drawer or not. But it is as I found it. There is a 3" crack running lengthwise on the base. JAPANESE VINTAGE 6 DRAWER W/ SECRET TANSU HARIBAKO SEWING BOX BURL ZELKOVA
This is a early Showa Era(c. 1930) haribako(sewing box) with a unique arrangement of five drawers with an additional removable top 6th drawer and a hidden section located behind the removable drawer in the flip top lidded section. The removable section under the flip top lid is divided into two sections with an area for a pin cushion on the left and on the far right a"third hand" which flips up and sets into place with a mechanical device for holding onto fabric. On the back right side(see picture 10) is a slot in which a bamboo measuring device(not included) could be stored. This type of tansu chest was used to store valuables as well as equipment for the person of the house to do repairs on Kimono and bedding as well as money and valuables. The entire surface of this chest is made of burled Japanese zelkova wood with kiri(paulownia) ... morewood interiors and zelkova( keyaki) case work. With exception to some minor scuffs. This chest is all original and overall in fine condition with a very warm 80 year old patina that only nearly a century of loving use could give. The original finish is remarkably well preserved with warm patina and just enough wear and mars at the edges for a little antique character. Waxed and buffed. Only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth is needed to maintain its glowing luster. The interior is lined with shimmering curly or"birdseye" maple. I have had many quarter sawn oak shaving stands over the years but this is certainly up near the top in quality. Adjustable mirror(up and down and tilts) which is beveled and shaped. A drawer just under the mirror. Two drawers in the base along with a door. Note the drawers and door all have the original unusual hardware. Two round side doors; one on either side. Probably the most interesting thing is the hidden drawer in the bottom of the piece-supported by the fancy center leg. We have refinished this piece and it has a smooth and even finish. The removable section under the flip top lid is divided into three sections. Behind this is a secret drawer. Opened by pulling it out using the finger hole. On the back right side is a slot in which a bamboo measuring devise could be stored. chest was made with skill using peg construction. All metal is of hand forged copper. This is an Early Showa Era(c. 1930) haribako(sewing box) with a unique arrangement of five drawers with a sixth area in the flip top lidded section. Possibly used for holding money(see pictures 8& 9) This type of tansu chest was used to store valuables as well as equipment for the person of the house to do repairs on Kimono and bedding as well as money and valuables. This chest was made with skill using hinoki wood peg construction. Without a single nail. The front and case work of this chest is made of Japanese keyaki( zelkova burl wood) with kiri(paulownia) wood interiors. This chest is all original and. An oak or elm carcass veneered with burr walnut with satinwood stringing. An intriguing little box as it has a lock on the main section and a secret drawer at the back released by lifting an iron pin in the interior at the back edge. So it was obviously intended to keep the contents safe. However the box measures 6 x 5.5 x 5.5 inches so is quite small for a writing box but there is evidence of red sealing wax on the interior lid indicating it was used as such or to store sealing wax and seals. The lock. Key and hinges seem to be later replacements but otherwsie the box is in good condition with a wonderful patina and colour. The base has a frame edge confirming the box is from the Georgian period. Here pictured is an antique mahogany lap desk. Circa 1800. Probably English. Measures approx. 20" across x 10" wide x 6" high(closed) No key. Several compartments. Ink bottle intact but top of neck is jagged(see photo#6) Photo#4 shows a secret drawer on one side only accessed by removing the metal dowel pictured on the felt. If the desk were closed and locked the drawer would be inaccessible. The ledge on the far back of the top surface is removable as are the lids of the middle small compartment and the compartment to its far right. I believe the metal parts are brass and the knob on the middle compartment is bone of some sort. These are very unique key chains of miniature. 3" game boxes of Clue and Monopoly which flip open to reveal a game board with a secret drawer that contains miniature playing pieces. They were manufactured by Hasbro in 1998 and are still mint in their bubble pack cards. The Clue card has a couple of very minor edge bumps(from storage) and a few spots of staining to the bottom back(as seen in the picture) while the Monopoly card has only a few minor edge bumps. Early Japanese Wood Puzzle Box, Artist Mark MM Secret Drawer, Roll Top Dog Lid
Early Japanese Wooden Puzzle Box"Hakone Yosegi" Traditional Designs with Two Dogs Incorporated on Roll-top Lid Spring Loaded Secret Drawer with"trigger" Hidden Behind Side Panel Makers Mark. In Diamond Shape on bottom with Japanese Symbols This Japanese puzzle box is fairly simple to open compared to some I've seen. Of coarse you have to know the correct procedure. According to my research this box would be a 4 Sun medium box. It measures 4 11/16" by 3 9/16" by 2 9/16 inches. The front side has a small sliding panel disguised as a fence for the dogs to jump over. This small 2 inch panel slides to the left uncovering a trigger for the drawer. Again. The trigger is disguised and you have to know it's there. When you press down on the trigger, the spring loaded hidden drawer springs open. With the drawer ... morenow open the roll-top lid can be pushed open by hand. Sounds simple, right. The lid has an interesting design with 2 dogs side by side. One in light brown wood, and one in dark brown wood. The background for the dogs is only slightly darker than the darker dog, and gives that dog a shadow effect. The lighter dog's head, front legs, back legs, and tail, actually outline the darker dog. This is hard to explain, see the photos. All 4 sides show dogs jumping fences, to hide the secret panel. This is a vintage piece in very good condition, and has only the minor wood wear that would be expected. I wish I had more information on the MM mark, but I'm sure someone out there does.

This is a mid Taisho Era(c. 1920) haribako(sewing box) with a unique arrangement of three drawers and a lift out lidded area with a hidden pulls set into the back chest(see pictures 6& 7) A finger was inserted into the holes in the back to push the drawers out(see pictures 7& 8) This type of tansu chest was used to store valuables as well as equipment for the person of the house to do repairs on Kimono and bedding as well as money and valuables. The entire case work of this chest is made of Japanese keyaki(zelkova wood) with kiri(paulownia) wood interiors. Great detail in shown in the craftsmanship as this chest is made entirely of hardened hinoki wood pins without a single nail. As was the custom during the Meiji and Taisho eras(see picture 11) This chest has been well used yet well loved and remains in very fine condition. The inlay depicts a bouquet of flowers with a bow and there are initials- probably the artist carved them in the top left hand corner. To open this box. One has to pull the bottom of the book and a drawer comes out that is pink satin lined. It can be completely removed. I bought this piece in Alsace. France, but it could very well have been carved in Switzerland as it is very close in style. The book itself measures 9.5" by 7" by 1.5" and the drawer comes out with a depth ... moreof 1" and 6.5" by 4.25" dimensions. Vintage INLAID WOOD Japanese Puzzle Box, Mt. Fuji - Secret Drawer - Painted
Up for bid is this Vintage Painted Wood Puzzle Box or Trick Box. The box is made in Japan and has scenes of Mt. Fuji on the top& flowers on the bottom. You have to carefully slide a piece along the side out& then the side drops down& the top slides off. Then the other side is slid up to reveal the drawer. It looks like some dummy tried prying it open and the top no longer sits flush. It can possibly be fixed or left as is. The box has a patina on it from age& the inlaid wood in geometric patterns makes it very hard to see how to open it. Some wrote some scribbles on the bottom as seen in the photo's. In the last photo you can see where the top is starting to come up. You can take some glue& clamp it to get it to sit flush again if desired. The box isn't real delicate but you have to be careful opening it& closing ... moreit. If you buy it& force the pieces roughly breaking them& then email me crying about it. An Antique Victorian Rosewood Writing Slope Cormack Brothers with Secret Drawer
8577 Writing Slope Description A Victorian writing slope in a dark rosewood veneer. It was made by Cormack Brothers of London around 1870 and has their name plate to the interior. The slope has been re-fitted with a felt writing surface and it has two cut glass inkwells which may well be the orginals. The slope has a hidden section under the inkwells and pen tray. This is accessed by pulling up the leftmost inkwell divider and causes a panel to spring off revealing two small drawers. The box has a brass top plate which is not engraved and a brass escutcheon. Comes with key and tassle but the lock is frozen. The exterior is polished to a satin finish and the deep toned wood is nicely grained as you can see in the images. Condition Split in wood to top. Further minor fine split lines in veneer. Writing surface to interior replaced. Some age ... morerelated wear but exterior wood generally good and polished to a satin finish. Wear and aging to inkwells one with dent to lid. Comes with key and tassle, but lock is non functional. Lid stays slightly ajar when closed. Dimensions(approx) Height 15.5 cms(6.25 inches) including handle. Width 35.5 cms(14 inches) Weight 3130 grams(before packing) Stock Code: 8577 NV12-3.
