The original owner(1866-1936) was wheelchair-bound. So this desk was well used and loved. It has remained in the same family ever since. The box measures 15" wide, 10½" deep, and 5½" tall(I believe this is large for a writing box of this age) You must look at the photographs to appreciate the beauty of this piece! The top is adorn with delicate designs. Separated by thin strips of metal. Gold gilding, mother-of-pearl, and various shades of inlaid wood make up the floral/vine-like center and the borders around it. Even the ... moretop's edges feature a gold& mother-of-pearl star design. There is a diamond-shaped brass plate around the key hole; the original key is included and still works to lock& unlock the box! There is also an inlaid brass notch on the box's top to lift the lid with ease. Amazing craftsmanship! The box has a hinged lid and opens fully to reveal a rich purple velvet-covered inclined surface. The purple is now faded around the edges with age(as you can see in the photos) There are five cubbyholes. One of which is rectangular(with a lid) to accommodate pens/pencils; and four square cubbies perfectly sized for the two ink bottles(included, although one is missing the cap) as well as other writing supplies. Other features include a spacious storage area in the base for paper or small books This is opened by the pull of a green ribbon(now faded) And last(but not least) is a hard writing surface that flips down from the lid. We are selling a lovely antique secretary drop front desk with an inlaid design on the front. As you can see the inlay pattern is quite nice and incorporates mother of pearl. The desk stands approximately 40" high by 28" wide by 15.5" deep. While the desk is a little rough around the edges- it could use a thorough cleaning and does have a number of scuffs and dings. As well as some loss to the back panel and the lower right edge of the front- it has a nice shape and patina with a little TLC will have a lot of use left to offer. nice estate find a 1800s lap desk crazy with mother of pearl inlay on the top this thing has been around for a long time i think the wood might be ebony i am not sure it has some damage to the coners so look at the pics good it show wear all over but is a neat old part of history the velvet show wear inside and has crackling of the black paint all over has a little ink bottle in it also could you think about pulling this out to use instead of your hp laptop who know what they will be useing 150 years from now its 15 1/2 inches by 12 inches by 4 3/4 inches. This is such a neat piece. Very old. Mid 1800s. I believe pre civil war. Birdseye maple wood with mother of pearl or possibly abalone inlay. In my opinion it's a travel writers box. Had the smooth wood on the interior. It has seen better days. Some missing inlay parts. Overall it's solid and had alot of life left in it. Has a locking mechanism.
