The chair shown to give a sense of scale Item# 110105PII25 This is a remarkably well preserved English Georgian Mahogany Kneehole Desk from the third quarter of the 18th century. It is crafted of well figured solid single boards of Mahogany on the top and sides- there is no veneer on this desk. Just solid boards of full grain mahogany. A simply molded edge runs the perimeter of the top, each corner scalloped. Each drawer is hand dovetailed front and back, with thin oak frame construction and thin oak drawer bottoms- all drawers are fully original and lack any adjustments and restorations to the secondary construction. Glowing hand forged brass hardware adorns each drawer. Appearing to have never been removed from the piece. Inside each drawer, as well as the tiny door in the kneehole area, silver metal locks are secured and functional. Each lock appears to be original, each uniquely cut on the right hand corner for all small drawers- it would appear the craftsman was presented with the challenge of making the lock of his choice fit the small space in conjunction with the pull hardware, and overcame this but cutting the corners of each lock. Hand made screws are visible throughout the lock hardware. While we cannot say for certain if the key is original, it is of the period, hand made and very similar in metal color to that of the locks. Each drawer is lip-molded and slides flawlessly in and out of the desk. Just below the top drawer is a secret drawer compartment. Family lore has it that this was made in 1840 but I don't know for sure. This was my father's father and. Given to me but I'm headed to. South America and none of our children want it. All the drawers and top are joined. With dovetails at the corners. All the drawer bottoms have chamfered. Ends that fit into a tight track in the drawer. Sides. I'm guessing that drawer facewood. Is cherry(mahogany? and hinder parts of drawers made from boxwood. All the drawers fit precisely. The large drawers have grooves worn in them. From riding over guidance rails in the front of. The drawer entry points(see pics) It looks like. This was by design to accommodate the heavy. Drawers(which are prob mahogany. Not cherry) Veneer is poor in several areas. Esp the slope top front. In fact, as I was rolling the 200 lb desk back inside after the photo shoot. I'll put it back in place with some wood screws. Before sending it out. The old finish is very well preserved with lots of antique character- mars. Wear and shrinkage separations from age- see photos. Mahogany wood has delicate inlaid banding and warm patina. The top two drawers are false. They drop to form a desk top. English Mahogany Schoolmaster's Antique Desk w/ Slanted Leather Top Late 19th Century w/ Ebonized Reeded Legs in the George III Style Item# 130009FPX20 This is a just lovely English Antique Schoolmaster's desk. Crafted in the late 19th Century of solid mahogany, mahogany veneers and pine secondaries. The slanted top provides a fine writing surface, covered in a warm-khaki tone tooled leather; lifting over original brass hinges, the interior retains what is probably an original blue paper liner and reveals a large storage space. Every aspect of the top is crafted with dovetails, from the tiny inkwells to the joinery of the entire slant front portion of the desk. Two small hand dovetailed drawers retain their original stamped brass hardware, framed in ebonized stringer inlays and retaining the same light blue papered liner. The desk ... morerests over boldly reeded and ebonized legs that terminate simply in stumped toes. Simply gorgeous for anyone decorating their home and looking for a great form in the hallway or entry way. A highly unique side table for a living room or a small writing desk to actually use for work and storage, this is a wonderful selection. With a warm patina and mellowing of the mahogany surfaces, remaining in quite wonderful condition throughout, this is a piece you will cherish for a lifetime. It is possible the piece was originally crafted mostly during the early 19th Century and was re-fashioned slightly or at least restored during the late 19th Century- there is some curious work with the dowel restorations around the drawer blades. Circa 18670. The desk boasts a dark sage green& gold tool leather surrounded a by a rounded thumb moulded edge top. Below, there are 9 large working graduated drawers to one side. The cock-beaded drawers feature brass key escutcheons and later very good quality turned brass shaped swan neck handles. All drawers and cupboard doors feature working locks and keys. To the back of the desk, there are a further three working drawers and below, there are two large working cupboards with hinged doors. Each cupboard features a fixed shelf. Each drawer and cupboard door features lovely quality thumb moulded fronts and boast a stunning grain configuration. This antique writing desk I believe it is from the very early 1800’s. There are some unique things that I think make the desk. I have the invoice From B. Manheim( The Antique Treasure House of The South) New Orleans. La. Sold to Mrs. Robert K. Drew Milwaukee Journal Co. 7/13/ 1964. Georgian Lap Desk 125.00 Chippendale style legs 50.00. Also there are small notes to show the buyer how to open things. So the buyer bought this 50 years ago. This I think is mahogany and inlayed brass with lock( I do not have the key) There are hidden drawers that many of these had but this one has a built in tee handle key to actually bolt it to a table with built in screws. I tried to picture these) I am not sure if the ink well is original but it had come with it 50 years ago. The owner Mr. Drew was the Vice President of the Milwaukee Journal Co. and my employer ... morelong ago. The desk itself did have a crack in the inner tray and I showed how it was repaired over 50 years ago. Also there are two cracks at the corners on the top. These were also there for over 50 years. The outside has tempered to a light golden color and the top has some stains. I have never tried to recondition it as to me it enhances the antique look of the piece. It measures 16” wide by 12” front to back and is about 6 ½” deep. The Chippendale style legs are floor to bottom of desk 14 ½” So together it stands about 20” tall. This is a superb large mahogany writing desk bureau made in England circa 1850. The condition is very good. The desk is far better than the pictures suggest. It has all the original brass handles the drawers are run fine and are solid oak with dovetail joints. It sits on bracket feet and has the original carrying handles to the back. This is a ca.1800 Georgian Mahogany Campaign Lap Desk. It has a full length dovetailed drawer with a brass locking rod. All of the brass hardware is original. The brass lock has a working key. It is 16"x 9.25"x 6"high and weighs 7 lbs. When open it is 19" long. There is a repaired hairline crack in the lid. The writing surface is dark green felt.
