When the cover is pulled down. ... moreThe slides pull down along with brass supports, and reveals a beautiful birch cubbyhole, multi-drawer interior with detailed inlay. Which makes me wonder if underneath the old, shabby-looking white paint, is the rest of the desk like this, or is it veneer or what is it? The drawers are painted on the outside, but inside are pine lined, which tells me that most likely the exterior is some sort of veneer. This piece came out of Denmark and dates from the 1840s to‘60s era. It’s a great period desk that someone decided to modernize in the shabby chic style many years ago with white paint and a gold border edge. The height to the writing lid, when opened, is 31 inches high, and gives you plenty of work space to write out checks for your antique purchases. The actual size of the desk, itself, is 48 inches wide, 22 inches deep, and 43 inches high. It’s quite unusual, because it actually comes apart in two sections, as you can see in the side-view photos. There is one large drawer which features a desk interior. Fitted with a pair of removable ink jars with Sterling silver lids. There is one more narrow but long drawer on the other side. Two sides have a pair of great candle stands that pull out. Top it seld is adjustable, it has a support legs below, that help you set the incline to your liking. Molding you see on the top, which would hold the paper you are working on, is removeable, fitted with metal plugs. Condition is good, it was well taken care of. Size is 26" x 22" and 28.75" tall. Gorgeous Antique Inlaid Writing Lap Desk
This is a fantastic old wooden lap desk with inlaid design on the top and the front. The lap desk measures 11 5/8" long x 8 3/8" wide x 5 1/8" high. The box is in antique used condition. The inlay is in very good shape. The box is done with veneer over wood. It looks like the little shield on the top and the piece around the key are done with gilding. It is worn as shown on the photos. The veneer is cracking a bit on the top front left corner and a bit on the side in the same area. There is a piece of veneer missing(about 1" long x 1/4" wide) Otherwise there are a few stress cracks in the veneer on the top. Generally the outside of the box is in good condition. On the inside of the box. There was probably velvet covering the wooden desk sections. Exquisite antique continental slant or fall front desk. Made with intricate inlaid marquetry featuring striking burl fruitwoods. This small decorative piece was likely intended as a ladies' writing desk. The fall front opens to reveal a writing surface as well as two cubbies, two drawers and a tiny cabinet with door. There are two drawers below the writing surface, each with consecutive concave sections, scrollwork inlay and ornate meta pulls. The bottom portion features a carved skirt and graceful cabriole legs ending in trifid feet. Overall the desk is in good antique condition. With some wear and minor crackling to the surfaces. Antique Asian Inlaid Lap Desk with Old Lock No Key Here is a great Antique Lap Writing Desk for your buying consideration. Recently acquired it at an estate sale. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself. The lap desk is probably Asian made. But that is just a guess, you be the judge. F or your consideration is this Asian Antique lap desk in very nice condition. The wood case has a great luster to it. The veneer on top of the case shows some cracking. What makes this piece really unique is the great mother of pearl. Metal and wood inlay that it has on it. The case has some dings in it and some veneer chipped off. Some of theinlay is missing, but the desk still looks and shows well. There is also an old metal lock still on the top of the case. Unfortunately no key comes with the desk. My guess is this piece dates to the mid to late ... more1800s. You be the judge before buying. This lap desk is beautiful with only small surface scratches. The corners have brass corner pieces. A small piece of wood is missing on the left side where the secret drawer comes out. Very nice wood and graining. The inside folding pieces are still all there as well. The hinges are all there. The rod the goes thru one of the hinges is not and will need attention. The lock and latch and the brass piece around the key hole are there, the case did not come with a key. The top of the desk has a green felt fabric on it which shows wear. The pull is on the secret drawer to pull it out. The other side has the brackets to hold the pull, but the pull is not there. Both sides of the lap desk open for storage. Has open areas for two ink bottles in the well areas. One on the left and one on the right. And a storage area for pens that has a wood cover and a brass handle to remove it with nice detailing. The bottom of the case of the lap desk has green felt on it. I see no maker's mark on the lock mechanism. The two top covers that hinge out are still securely attached to the base of the case by their hinges. The lap desk measures 15-7/8" wide.

It comprises three independent parts- 1) Moulded cornice with graceful profile accentuated by faux inlaid dentils 2) Two-door book cabinet with intersecting mullions defining nine glass panes each 39”L x 11.25”D x 44.5”H 3) Drop-front desk has 8 letter pidgeonholes and 4 drawers laid out side-by-side. Drawers have beautiful brass pulls. Original leather desktop has embossed border around. The drop front has swan neck brass pulls and plates. Although the righthand pull is missing. The cabinet below has two doors with frame and panel construction. Bracket feet support the whole at bottom. The desk is made of mahogany intricately inlaid ... moreacross cornice. Desk front and lower cabinet doors with ribbons& garlands together with fine trim lines and geometrics. These inlays may be period or may have been added in the later Edwardian(1890-1920) The top of the drop front is trimmed all the way around its perimeter in satin wood. Both right and left sides of the three components display a rectangular accent trim inlay. Desk drop front. And upper and lower cabinet doors have large keyed case locks, which date the desk to the late George III period. Original keys are included. This is a superb example of English cabinet-making art at the highest level. The desk is in very good condition. With few dents. There is a horizontal crack running from the lower right side to about the middle of the desk front(see photo) The brass pull on left side is missing. The wood trim at the top of the lefthand letter pidgeonhole needs re-glueing. Small piece from left foot on side needs re-glueing. Interior desktop leather is original and could stand to be replaced. Antique mother of pearl inlaid lap desk as is birds eye maple Regency English?
An antique lap desk with a bird design using mother of pearl inlay measuring approximately 5" tall. 12-7/8" wide, and 9-1/8" deep. The wood looks like bird's eye maple and the inlay around the perimeter appears to be brass. We do not see a mark so we do not know the maker or the region of origin, but looks like an English Regency influenced piece to us. This item is for restoration, as both hinges need repair/replacement and there is loss to some of the inlay around the top edge. We also do not have the key. The inner surface has been replaced with green felt. There is some wear and tear/damage to the inside as well(please see photos) Otherwise normal wear and tear, a little scratching, no other major problems. We took it to our most knowledgeable antique expert here in Sacramento. He told us that it was made between 1830 to 1870. But most likely around 1830. He says that it was English made. It is made of Burl Walnut on the outside and faux Rose wood painted on the inside. The lid has a brass plaque in the center and the name Miriam is engraved in it. There is several types of shell and in between all of the different woods on the lid there is brass inlay. The writing surface is the original velvet, you can still even see a pretty border painted on the velvet. It could be replaced easily if you want, we like it like it is. It has a spot for an inkwell and a spot for a sanding pounce. ... moreIt also has a spot for the pen to lay in and in the center there is a spot to store accessories. It does have a small piece of wood missing by the sanding pounce spot, doesn't detract from the look or function. On the underside of the lid, it has a latch to bring down the writing surface to store papers and such in. The lower part of the writing surface lifts up for more storage. It does have some condition issues, a couple pieces of abalone are missing, along with the white material. There are a couple of chips to the burl walnut and a couple of minor cracks of the burl walnut. It is beautiful and we decided not to fix any of the issues. We think it shows the character of the piece. It came out of an estate from San Francisco. It measures 13" x 9" x 5" high. It would make a wonderful Christmas or Hanukkah gift!
