The reverse has 9 dummy drawers which make the desk appear identical from both sides and it is perfect for sitting centrally in a room with the back on display. The desk has a number of very fine quality ... moredetails including hand carved panels at each flank and either side of the kneehole. The upper panels with etched back and crossed oak leaves on twisted branches and the lower panels of trailed ivy wrapped with ribbon. The upper drawers and side panels are dressed with thickly cut and beautifully flamed mahogany. The overhung rounded top is inset with an olive green leather in very good condition with gold tooled and embossed edge detail and gold leaves to each corner. All of the drawers open and close smoothly and have good strong interiors with dovetailed joints. The escutcheons are original throughout. The desk dismantles into three sections- two pedestals and top and has an unusual mechanism whereby the top slots down into the pedestals and wraps around the front- so that it looks very much as though it is made in one piece when all together. Condition: there are minor dings and veneer repairs here and there to the working drawers and some very fine and old grain cracks which are stable and not going anywhere. A one of a kind survivor this piece is both a parlor or games table the is convertible to a writing desk. The top swings up and the desk portion emerges for the center of the piece as if by magic! Tis is Victorian ingenuity! The piece is carved with faces in the renaissance revival style and is made from beautiful tiger oak. The center desk portion lifts and descends by a gear and cable mechanism. This is one of the most unusual pieces of American Victorian and we are thrilled to offer it! Note the ornately carved legs and figures at the center which hide the desk and mechanisms. It was made in Chicago circa 1860 to 1880. The top features a two-door cabinet for transferware dishes, or could be used in a library for books. The glass is original wavy glass used from that time period. There are two adjustable shelves. The middle features a drop down desk complete with lock and key, original letter and paper slots, two drawers with milk glass knobs. The bottom features three drawers with original locks. He became a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives in 1899. He held that position till 1901. He also was a member of the Connecticut State Senate from 1901 to 1902. He became lieutenant governor of Connecticut in 1903. He held that position till 1905. He became the 44th Governor of Connecticut on January 4, 1905. Beautiful Drop Leaf Secretary made in the Chicago area between 1888 and 1892.From the turnings on the cap piece to the spoon carved Chestnut. This piece is both unique and rare.I would say this is possibly one of the last pieces of American Chestnut furniture produced in the United States before the blight. This piece HAS been professionally restored,and the lock has a working key. Victorian American Civil War Lap Desk Wooden Ornate Brass Hinges ca 1860 Up for Auction is this Antique Civil War wooden writing laptop desk. It has all brass hardware and is quite ornate. It shows some age and was used. It dates ca. 1860. It has a purple velvet lining that is ORIGINAL. It has two ink well compartments a pen compartment and two large paper compartments. I did not find the secret compartment with the gold coins hidden yet. Maybe you can find it? This is an American made desk not English. It has two ink bottles that are very old. They do not match each other but they look like period pieces. The key for the brass lock was lost long ago. The ONLY replacement part is the handle for the cover of the pen compartment. It looks like a push pin. Everything else is original. Included are three quill pens. I only pictured one. The outside ... moreof the box shows wear on the veneer on one side. The large brass hinges and lock add such masculine beauty. This is a real handsome lap desk. MEASURMENTS ARE: 17" BY 12” Overall condition is very good. It does show its age in places where it was well used. It was well made and is still firmly sturdy and durable. I have seen very similar lap desks sell for over $500 right here on ebay.
