It comes to us from an 78 year old lady who acquired it from her mothers old barn. The stuff she brought us had been stored and untouched for at least 40 years. It was most likely a one of a kind creation from an Ohio farmer or carpenter. The secretary was rough planed and you can still see the circular saw marks(see pictures) The circular saw was invented in 1830s. So the secretary was made no earlier than 1830. It is in two pieces and would look well in both an old or modern property in any downstairs room as a desk. The desk stands on square back legs and the most wonderfully shaped cabriole legs with a large diamond shaped front and carving of the leg. There is one large drawer and two smaller drawers eitherside of the kneehole. They are beautifully carved and have their original handles. The top itself is in good condition with a bull nosed edge and a few marks as one would expect leading to the top section. T he desk measures 52" high x 34" width x 21" depth. This is Italian workmanship from the old days that can not be found in modern times. CUPID measuring 9" height and 6" at the widest part attached to the top that covers the compartment where the clock sits. Very good aged condition. CLOCK T he clock has 3 different hand designs and incased in bronze? solid brass. The face is a natural cream ivory? porcelain with black Roman numerals. Ga 1895, there is a advertizement for the number 2, which leads me to believe this Desk pre-dates 1895, possibly as early as 1884. This is a assumption on my part. I have not tried to clean desk yet and it is somewhat dirty right now. I will add photo's cleaned up when done. This would be a great piece to take back to original condition if desired. Just removed from local estate is this Rare 19th century English Architect Desk. On 4 legs with castor wheels. The top is covered with a beautiful gold tooled leather. There is one large drawer which features a desk interior. Fitted with a pair of removable ink jars with Sterling silver lids. There is one more narrow but long drawer on the other side. Underneath the desk is a paper disposal original period brown velvet sack with a hanging cord attached to a lovely ivory pearl stone set within a bronze circular ring with designs. There are two tips missing from the delicate finials located on left side underneath the desk and on the right side bottom between the legs. Antique 19thC Victorian Rococo Desk Table Chest Tiger Maple Mahogany Ornate RARE This is a magnificent and strikingly beautiful antique 19th Century Victorian Rococo Desk dresser that is elaborately carved with beautiful contrasting tiger stripe birdseye maple solid drawer fronts against figured mahogany construction. The drawer fronts are solid wood and not veneers. It measures 47 inches long by 30 inches tall 18.75 inches deepest depth. Here's what I stated about this gorgeous desk's condition: Some chips and wood splits in area but overall strikingly beautiful condition very strong. Sturdy, and stable and nothing broken. Some minor scratch marks on surface areas. Looks like possibly a repair or replacement wood on one side because of the two slabs of wood evident. Also, there are visible nail heads on one side that looks like a ... morelater reinforcement because the nails are not covered over to blend in. Beautiful curved drawers all pull out easily and function properly and some are stained on the inside, but odor free and no mold or rot but good wood. Cutler& Sons roll top desk. This is a very rare antique desk accessory marked A. Cutler& Sons Buffalo. New York with a pat. date of 1884. It is in excellent condition and would allow the owner to have his pens and inks ready and able to be switched by simply rotating the cast iron holder. There is a catch on one end that would allow you to hook this to a drawer or possibly there was another spot on the desk to attach. Davenport desks were commonly thought of as"Ship's Captain's" desks. Very efficient and organized in a compact design that took up little space. Reputed to have gotten their name from the inventor. Captain John Davenport, back in the days of Clipper Ships plying their trade to the Far East. DESCRIPTION: The desk has four(4) drawers that run along both sides of the desk. On the left side the four(4) drawers have knobs but are designed not to open. On the right side of the desk. The four(4) drawers have knobs and do open and close. When used at sea on a Clipper Ship the desk was securely bolted down to prevent movement. The hinged desk top is 21" X 15" and 3/4" thick. It opens up to reveal two interior drawers with knobs. The drawers are each 9"X 5"X 2" The open area inside of the desk when the hinged top is open is 18 5/8" X 13" and the depth of the opening at the front of the opening is 2 1/2" Gradually increasing in depth to 4 3/4" at the back. There is an open lid hinge on the left side of the desk that holds the top of the desk in an open position. The two(2) hinges that connect the desk top to the base both work smoothly and easily. Sitting on top of the desk top at the rear is a box with attached lid that opens to reveal seven(7) individual compartments that were used for stationary. RARE ANTIQUE MILITARY OFFICER'S TRAVELLING CAMPAIGN DESK VANITY
This is a hard to find. Original Antique Military Officer's Travelling Campaign Desk and Vanity. We believe that this piece is English in origin and may date to the early 1800's. This piece measures approximately 25" wide by 19 1/4" deep by 33 1/2" tall when closed. This piece has so many features and functions. The main body has a horizontal and vertical drawer. This can be seen in the 8th and 9th photo, with the dovetailing and interiors shown. There is one large drawer which pulls out to reveal a vanity compartment, which is metal lined, this would have most likely contained bowls and implements for washing and shaving, etc. Directly above this drawer is a pull out writing ledge, which is topped in leather(obviously replaced) and contains a secret storage for documents or what have you, which is revealed when one ... morelifts up on the tab on the back of the writing surface when fully pulled out. The top of the case of the desk/vanity opens up.The lid can be supported by a brass hinge on the right or by a prop up stick which sits. Hidden in the top compartment of the desk, serving also as a holder for writing implements, or the top can be supported by the mirror. The mirror, which is wooden backed folds down in order to close the top, however it is adjustable with an easel back and a notched base, the mirror also slides back and forth. There are numerous compartments in the top of the piece. Many of which are removable. There is one secret drawer in the top left rear.which is revealed by removing a lid, then sliding out a small wooden divider. This can be seen clearly in the sixth photo provided. Although there are some condition issues. This piece, overall, is in remarkable condition considering its age and the fact that it was a functioning piece which was transported perhaps on and off a ship or into a tent on a battlefield. The desk is very unusual with swing side ends, which means that they flip around with a latch that allows it to go to the back side so the“S” top(which normally is a pain for people with computers, will not be a problem with this desk) Someone had lost the original thumb latch locks, and has replaced with modern day locks, which work fine. The roll has been all re-canvassed and re-glued so it won’t rip apart as original rolls usually done. This rare Boulle desk was imported by Grandparents from France. They fell in love with the beautiful lines and dramatic coloring and detail of the design. The desk has a black finish with striking brass and red tortoiseshell fond(inlay) with brass fittings and ornaments. Andre Charles Boulle has that trademark look of brass overlaid over the red and black tortoiseshell. An opulent look especially on Boulle desks. The desk top locks with a key(shown) and opens to show 3 drawers, a leather covered sliding shelf. Inside there is also a storage area. In 1987 this desk was appraised for $7,000.
