Antique Lap Desk: American, Federal Period
This is an extremely rare American Made grain painted slope from the 1780-1800 Period. Almost all the slopes in this period were imported from England and just a few from France. It is all original including lock(no key) Handles, hinges, and finishes. The only contemporary component is the covering on the wiriting board which was carefully chosen to duplicate the original fabric which was disintegrated when we purchased this box some two years ago(a swath of the original material is include for comparison) The condition of the box is very interesting. It shows years of use and some of it hard use. Wood is worn to groves and polished sufaces by the passing of fingers. Ink stains substantial portions of the interior wood, grease stains are evident, penciled numbers are writen on the back of the writing boards. And, five receipts and notes dating ... morefrom 1866 to 1871 have been shellacked to the back of one of the writing boards. The notes refer to purchase of horse hardware and trips with wagons to various destinations indicating that this box at one time was owned by a teamster. Surely this was the property or a fairly well to do individual initially as were most of these artifacts when new. It appears that it transitioned over time to be a working box for a person who drove horses for a living. I am sure that if only it could talk it indeed would tell some interesting stories both about our post colonial period not to mention our Civil War period. All the brass are of the proper hand made varieties for the period and the basic material of the box is white pine. Suggesting a North Atlantic origin. All of the drawers are inlaid with satinwood stringing, each drawer is hand dovetailed, the brass hardware pulls and escutcheons are original, the hidden drawer is shaped and in the interior section behind small door, bracket feet are original, secondary wood is pine and the back boards of pine are hand planed. Offered today for your consideration! A very important American Victorian mechanical desk/ games table. A very rare find made by the Brushke Furniture Co. In Chicago. A one of a kind survivor this piece is both a parlor or games table the is convertible to a writing desk. The top swings up and the desk portion emerges for the center of the piece as if by magic! Tis is Victorian ingenuity! The piece is carved with faces in the renaissance revival style and is made from beautiful tiger oak. The center desk portion lifts and descends by a gear and cable mechanism. This is one of the most unusual pieces of American Victorian and we are thrilled to offer it! Note the ornately carved legs and figures at the center which hide the desk and mechanisms. It was made in Chicago circa 1860 to 1880. There is a very light stamp bearing the name Brushke ... moreon the inside of the lift up drawer lid that is visible when the desk is open. The piece is very solid and in over all good condition and would be as usable today as it was 150 years ago. There is an age crack at the top of the letter compartment that pops up. 1860's Flame Mahogany Late American Empire Desk with Carved Corner Columns and Feet This estate item is ready to use as is. It has beautifully carved front corner columns and feet. The inner desk case and all drawers are dovetailed construction. The front dovetails of the drawers have been bulked up with added strips of wood that cover them up. but they are there! The back corners of the drawers are dovetailed as well. I pulled the inner case out so you can see the construction. Also there is rough cut wood on all drawer bottoms and back of inner case. Secondary wood looks to be pine. The pulls as you can see are changed out to glass. The key is with it and works to secure the drop front. All and all this is a very pretty desk ready to use! Here is an absolutely gorgeous antique mahogany desk with lovely burl mahogany veneer and border design inlay. Circa 1840 and American made. This slant front desk drawers. The desk stands 43 inches tall and measures 38 inches wide by 21 inches deep, front to back. The writing surface itself is 36 inches wide by 21 inches from front to back. The surface is beautiful and in very good condition. The inside of the desk also reveals 16 small drawers and an additional cubby with lovely inlay door as shown. Below the desk slant front. T here are four large drawers. Each 31 1/2 inches wide and 18 1/4 inches front to back and then 2 3/4, 3 3/4, 4 3/4 and 6 inches deep respectively, in descending order. The lock sets are original and in working order and the keys are replaced. The drawers are all still lined with a thin blue paper.certainly a Victorian ... morething. Underneath the inside small draw in the original Alexander Roux New York Label, which was printed between 1848 and 1867 when cabinet shop worked at this location. Decorated with gilded ormolu this small Victorian Louis XVI style vanity measures 17 ¼ deep by 28 1/8 wide by 28 1/8 tall and with the top section measures 48 tall overall. Beautiful Antique American Bureau Drop Front Desk C.1880-1900 (Santa Barbara)
This beautiful piece of American history is constructed from solid American oak that has aged beautifully. The hand tooling on the drop front and cabinet panels is meticulous and detailed. There are 2 small side drawers featuring period brass handles and 1 wide center drawer to the front that is secured with a key latch. The pull-out rails are solid and in perfect condition. Generally antiques of this period will possess subtle elements of wear. Which invariably add to the charm of the piece. The short, sturdy feet show some age appropriate wear. All of the drawers and the lower cabinet doors open easily. The piece was professionally restored at some point without compromising it's charm or the elegant tooling. 1789-1823 ANTIQUE AMERICAN FEDERAL FLAME MAHOGANY SECRETARY BOOKCASE EXCELLENT We rarely characterize one of our antiques as“important. but this truly outstanding approximately 200 year old piece from the American Federal period is the exception. It consists of separate upper and lower cases with a fold over slanted writing surface with the following features& characteristics: The outstanding mahogany finish with crotch mahogany veneer is in excellent condition. Viewed from front or sides. The entire piece has a stunning, rich and warm patina. The upper bookcase and desk features a handsome projecting molded crown/cornice with a flat top. The double glazed panel bookcase doors feature individually paned window glass. All but two of these beautiful old wavy glass panes are original. The two(which were cracked) have been replaced with wavy ... moreold glass of the same period. Three wood shelves. Original to the piece, are fitted inside the bookcase. These. Plus the bottom of the book cabinet provide four display and storage surfaces for books and collectibles. Each of the 3 shelves is 39.25” wide and approximately 7.25” deep. There are two shallow. Aligned drawers immediately beneath the bookcase and above the desk surface. Please note the photo attached showing their hand cut dovetailed joints. The original brass knobs are sized in proportion with the drawers and match the larger version of the same on the lower case drawers. Immediately beneath the two drawers. The surface unfolds to reveal a slanted, hinged fall-front writing surface. Two pull-out. Brass-ringed narrow lopers(wood supports) slide out to secure the desk top when open. The surface of the desk is original and has crackled with age. The lower case features a projecting long drawer above two recessed drawers. Very Handsome Antique American Golden Oak S Curve Roll Top Desk with raised panels and carved drawer pulls. Circa 1890- 1910. 50" wide x 34" deep x 50 1/4" high. Knee hole 20 1/2" wide x 24 3/4" high at mid point. This desk has been completely restored at some point in the past and is fully functional. Some drawer are slightly tighter in their movements than others. But all are in working order. The top portion of the desk has twenty-eight(28) drawers and twelve(12) slots. The bottom desk section has eight(8) drawers and two pull out slides. Finish is in great condition with minimal wear and minor nicks and scratches. Here we offer a beautiful turn 19th/ 20th Century Queen Anne. Ball and Claw Slant Front Desk. Sea Shell cartouche motifs. Not your average, run of the mill desk. This baby has crisp carvings and intricate construction. It stands on four high beautifully curved and carved legs, ending in ball and claw foot. Front lid carved to the max opens up and sets on the support slides that pull out on ends. Really hard to find pieces like this. I purchased this desk from Antique Accents on the square in Marietta GA 9-14-07. I will tell you what I know. But only garrantee that you are biding on the desk shown in the pictures. I was told the desk came from a school house in Wolf Creek KY, and it was made in the 1840's. Based on what I know I believe this to be a good estimate of the age. I think it has the original finish and the original hardware. I consider it to be in beautiful condition! Beautiful Antique 19th C. American BURLED Oak Rolltop Desk
The photographs must speak for themselves. I have limited knowledge in the world of Antiques. What I know. The desk is original. It has all its original hardware and drawers. The owner restored it himself. By restored he means that he merely cleaned it and then put the clear? finish on it. So this desk has never faded or worn. I love it and think it very special. Nice ANTIQUE 1827 AMERICAN TRAVELING LAP DESK Secret Compartment PROVENANCE NOTE
I will be listing a variety of nice estate-fresh Antique and Vintage Items this week. Here is a Great ANTIQUE MAHOGANY AND POPLAR WOOD TRAVELING LAP DESK with EARLY PROVENANCE NOTE FOUND HIDDEN INSIDE A SECRET COMPARTMENT INSIDE DESK which reads"Made by Thomas J. Luther. June 26. 1827 in the 70 year of his age. Witness John G. Hopkins" There is also another 19thC name written on the frame of the interior writing surface which looks like"Miss Lizzie Carlile" see photo) I would guess this to be an American Lap Desk since the secondary wood is made of a poplar wood. Desk box is 22"W x 11"D x 8-1/8"H. I was not able to identify who the names on the note and box are in my quick research. Since the note says Thomas Luther was 70 years old in 1827. Then he would have been born in 1757(or maybe 1756? I find it unusual ... morethat this maker's information was witnessed by another gentleman- I've never seen that before. Beautifully made early lap desk. Early square nail and dovetail construction. Lovely old patina to exterior mahogany surface. The desk has a working key for the exterior lock(you need to turn key to the left a bit hard to lock the desk. But will turn fine and lock and unlock the desk once you get past the sticking point) The desk also has a locking bottom drawer- you pull up the metal rod on inside of box to release the drawer. The desk has a secret triangular-shaped compartment underneath the center well- first you push down the outside end of the pen tray to lift out the tray, and then you lift out the partition wall to access the compartment. The Early-19thC provenance note was found rolled up inside this compartment. The brass hinges look like later replacements but function very well. Some chipping to edges of wood around the hinges. Also a chip off of wood on the rear side right corner of box. An aquaintance of mine nicely replaced the leather hinges behind the green felt on the interior of desk. Antique American Mahogany Writing Desk Bureau with Brass Handles
This is a very nice very heavy Desk Bureau made in USA circa 1820. There are a few little repairs to the flap but the rest of the desk is pretty good. The colors is a brown and slightly reddish. The drawers and the flap has satinwood string inlay. There are small areas were some is missing, it sits on splayed feet and has brass handles which may not be the original ones. The back and the drawer linings again are all original with dovetail joints to the drawers. Its fitted with 2 envelope drawers to the interiors and many small drawers with a few small brass handles missing. But we will try and find these before its sold. The slides work fine to support the flap. Measurements are 42 wide 20 deep. 43 high. This is a very nice mahogany with satinwood inlay American writing desk. to the top behind the door there are drawers with pigeon holes. To the base there are there drawers to either side they are there compartments for keeping bottle of drinks. It has the pull down flap for writing with a green baize. It sits on square tapered legs with some inlay. The top comes of the base so its easy to transport. A very nice American piece of antique. Measurements are 41 wide 48 high 21 deep.
