This is a great antique 19th century French slant front desk with excellent craftsmanship shown in the carving work and the lid where you can see the hand planing that was done to the piece. The hardware is all original on this piece but the leather has been replaced. There are a couple imperfections that are shown in the final two pictures there is a nearly identical one as seen in picture 11 over the other pull out to lay the slant down on that couldn't be pictures. Oak slant-top countinghouse or printer's desk. Late 19th century. Beautiful dark oak finish and wide grain to wood. Turned spindle legs. Rail and turned stiles on top. Two divided drawers with brass pulls. One drawer has a wooden escutcheon, but the other's is missing and damaged. Desk top does not lift. Including rail and stiles. Desk stands 59" tall(nearly 5' Height to desk top is 46" and clearance between bottom of desk and the ground is 36 1/2" Desk is 48" 4' wide and 29" deep. This is an Antique 19th Century Victorian Oak Roll Top Desk dating from the late 1800s. It measures 47 1/2 inches wide by 29 1/2 inches from front to back. It is 48 1/4 inches high. The back is finished. It has two slide out trays. On the left there are 4 drawers. On the right there are two regular sized drawers and below them is a very deep drawer that is the size of two drawers in height. The drawer on the right hand side at the top has a different style of handle. There is no middle drawer. There are a lot of cubby holes in the desk. Please see pictures for condition. The roll top works well. The extra low buy-it-now price is a lot less than I paid for it many years ago. The top and the bottom of the desk separate for easy moving. It has several compartments of different sizes. One drawer, a small compartment with a lift off lid, a large packet with a snap closure attached to the inside of the front panel door, and another packet of bound stationery that you can slide out. Please see photograph#12. The pull out tab on this packet is torn. If you look at the inside of the lid. You will see three sheaths, two of which are holding a pen and a bakelite letter opener. the middle sheath is torn in half, and so, cannot be used. The pen was in the box when ... moreI bought it and is, of course, not original to the box. The letter opener was also in the box and may be original to the box. I am selling this piece with all the items that were in it when I purchased it. The brass hardware is all original. But I do not have the key for the lock. Since there is no key to lock the box, it cannot be carried by the handle on top without opening and spilling the contents. The hinge on the bottom right of the front panel is loose. But I will leave that to the new owner to tighten the screws which are all there. The overall width including the molding lip on the bottom measures 11 1/2" and without the lip it is 11" wide. The depth is 7 1/4" and the heighth measures 8 1/2" The patina and the figure in the wood of the quartered white oak is just beautiful with barely a flaw. I've had this box displayed on my desk for a few years. But before me, someone took very good care to keep the outside of the box immaculate, but judging by the wear on the inside, it is obvious that it was well used and handled often although there are very few scratches on the wood inside. The front is hand carved with flutings. It measures 10-3/4" tall by 25-1/4" wide by 16-1/2" deep. Good condition: original finish, horizontal crack to left side board, base oak molding a later addition, missing the interior shelves or cubbyholes, missing the original lock.
