FINE FLAMED MAHOGANY EMPIRE SECTRETARY CIRCA 1840 GLASS TOP DRS/SOLID LOWER DRS
This is a fine empire secretary circa 1840. The front is flamed mahogany that is stunning. The piece has been professionally refinished and is exquisite. The overall heighth is 96 1/2" with the casters which makes it slightly over 8' tall. By removing the casters the height drops to 94 1/4" The piece is in two parts. The top bookcase section is 48 3/4" tall x 46" wide and 13" deep. There are two glass doors that measure 43 1/2" x 23" The top holds three shelves. The lower section stands 47 3/4" high with the casters and 45 3/4" without the casters. The base is 21" deep. There are three small drawers at the top of the lower section followed by the hidden writting space. The writing area is 16 1/2" deep. Below that are two solid doors that measure 20 1/4" x 22" The inside ... moreof the lower doors are hand beveled. The base is finished with a scalloped edge that makes a fine detail. There is a key that works the locks for the top and bottom doors and a seperate key that works the lock to the writing area. Here is an absolutely gorgeous antique mahogany desk with lovely burl mahogany veneer and border design inlay. Circa 1940 and American made. This is a Governor Winthrop style slant front desk with drawers. The desk stands 43 inches tall and measures 38 inches wide by 21 inches deep, front to back. The writing surface itself is 36 inches wide by 21 inches, front to back and within the desk itself there are 16 small drawers and an additional cubby with lovely inlay door as shown in my photographs. There are four large drawers below the desk, each 31 1/2 inches wide and 18 1/4 inches front to back and then 2 3/4, 3 3/4 4 3/4 and six inches deep respectively, in descending order. Front and sides makes this piece very stunning and a great conversation piece.It comes with the original ink bottles, pen, and key. Solid Walnut...Antique Victorian Desk Victorian Antique Furniture...Circa 1840
Gorgeous solid black walnut slant top writing desk. Circa 1820-1860 I rescued this diamond in the rough. It had many many coats of white paint hiding this beautiful black walnut wood. I lovingly& meticulously hand restored this desk back to full glory. I restored the finish with many. Many coats of hand rubbed shellac, maintaining the antique warm glow, rubbed to a silky smooth, yet allowing the beautiful grain textures to be felt. There was a trim around the back of the top which was missing. I custom made this new back rail trim using reclaimed 250 year old black walnut. The period solid walnut hand carved drawer pulls are from a Victorian dresser The harp shaped end is gorgeous and rare. As you can easily see with its cone shaped finial on the end of the hand turned support which joins it to the drawer base. The slant top is fixed ... morein position. There is no lid that lifts up, this was designed as a writing desk, dating back to the quill pen days. There is an age shrinkage split in the top which I chose not to restore. It gives great character to this lovely piece. The drawer lock mechanisms are missing.I restored all the drawers. Carefully taking them all apart and regluing them all and now they are rock solid and slide excellently. Full depth drawers with lots of storage. The desk is finished on all sides.It is a showpiece from all angles. I purposefully left some character marks remain in this desk such as tiny chip of wood.left top edge) pinholes etc, they give this desk awesome character, I was not trying to create a reproduction piece I try and respect the antique with all of its age, history and character. This is a gorgeous antique. Circa 1840 rosewood lap desk. Includes the key. 2 silver ink bottles, porcupine quill. There is brass inlay across the top and sides. Approx. Measurements: 13 7/8" x 9 1/4" x 4 5/8" There are six compartments on the inside: 2 for the silver ink bottles. 1 to hold items such as stamps. 1 for the porcupine quill. Antique Schoolmaster's Desk, Circa 1840's to 1860's, From Pennsylvania, Poplar
As far as I can determine. This Pennsylvania schoolmaster's desk is primarily made from poplar and is completely original. I believe it most likely dates from the 1840's- 1860's, and has been signed twice on the underneath side of one drawer with the initials PWS. Beneath that, also written in pencil or lead, is RD#1, whatever that may mean. This signature adds intrigue and interest to the desk. The hinges, strike, lock, escutcheon, and knobs on the two inside drawers all appear to be original. The measurements are 35 1/8" wide, 38 3/8" tall, and 24 3/4" deep. The desk definitely shows signs of age, but it is in very fine condition overall, and it is well constructed. Because of the size and weight of the desk, it is best suited for a local pick-up.
