Another unique item from Indelible Curiosities Antique Early 19th C Brass Mahogany Lap Desk w/Hoffer Docs Fnd In Hidden Drawers Description: This lap desk contains no ordinary so-called"hidden" drawers! We purchased this at an auction only to discover when we brought it home that this mahogany with brass inlay lap desk has a hidden locking mechanism which when released springs a thin board off the inside of the desk revealing two small drawers. Like something out of a treasure hunter's dream. The hunt did not end there for when we opened the drawers we found- no, not gold coins(darn it) but several folded documents all from the early 1800s! There are four papers in total. One of which is the original instructions for opening the secret compartment, the other three are all related to one person, Selina Hoffer a.k.a. Selina James ... moreand later as Selina Hall(the latter two are her married names) Two are her original marriage certificates dated 1825 and 1834 and the third is a less formal all handwritten original document stating who, where, and when(August 26, 1794) Selina was baptized. We have scanned these separately into one pdf file and will include the original documents as well as print-outs for the buyer(happy to provide the pdf files as well) Please note the last image is of all four scanned images of the papers but combined using Adobe Photoshop into one image- this is not representative of our scanned pdf files as we did those scanning each paper separately. We will include the objects we found in the two inkwells: orange pellets which are possibly ink pellets intended to be dissolved in water and a broken into two pieces red hard somewhat flat rectangular object with what appears to be some black ink on it- possibly also dissolves or is meant for mixing ink. An unusual find at an estate sale is this 1800s Victorian travel writing desk with inkwell. Stuffed full of copperplate handwritten letters. There are over 100 letters, some with envelopes, in the storage compartment under the blotter. The beautiful wood box needs restoration, however, as it is in damaged condition. The front lock is missing, there is a brass curved corner piece missing, and the lid does not sit square- looks like a problem with a hinge adjustment. The felt on the underside is missing, and the blue velvet blotter on the writing surface is stained. A cut glass inkwell is missing its lid. There is a crack in the veneer on the front, and a chip on the back. The inlaid brass straps are present with original patina. The brass oval disc on the lid is loose, and has not been monogrammed. This is an antique Victorian 1800s solid wood sloped travel lap desk with working brass lock and key. Featuring. Brass hinges and lock, blue felt writing surface with two storage compartments underneath. It has two inkwell compartments and the center section for pens lifts out. Found inside the center compartment was six nice quill pen ends and what appears to be some sort of pencil. The lapdesk wood looks beautiful and is undamaged. There is an inscription inside the box it is pictured and says that" This box was presented on December 25th 1852" So obvioulsy a Christmas gift. A very nice antique. Circa 1890's, Victorian style Federal type drop front desk. The maple wood desk has a brass gallery around the top boards. The drop front has a carved stylized flower, the case front corners carved as spools. Lopers pull forward to support the drop front, the cubbyhole with two drawers. Three case drawers have oval Federal style brass pulls and brass escutcheons, all three locks present. The sides are three boards. It rests on bracket feet on brass casters. Desk measures 40" tall by 32" wide by 20" deep, the drop front 26" by 13" Very good plus condition: maple refinished with glossy walnut stain. Some shrinkage butt joint separation to boards on left side. Small chip to top left corner of drop front. Sloppy glue repair to back left leg.

Fine Brass Bound Mahogany Travel Writing Desk Ship Capt Signed James London 1814
Antique Ship Captain's Writing Desk Estate find from the home of a collector with with a New England family provenance. This is a large heavy Ship Captain's Traveling Writing Desk. It has decorative brass bound corners and edges, side handles, lock front and inscribed monogrammed plaque on top with the initials"JL" Inside there is a top surface piece that fits into the top with a small latch(the second latch is missing) Both the top and bottom inside pieces have crisscrossed ribbons on one side to hold paperwork. In the front is a rows of compartments- two small ones have lids and the center longer section has a curved wood lid with a handle. On the reverse side of this longer lid there is writing that says"James London August 1814" There is another name in the middle but I can't make it out. There is a Brass ... morepiece on the side that lifts up to hold the top of the desk up. The one on the other side is missing. Under that piece is a small brass dowel that when lifted out allows for a bottom drawer to be opened and pulled out- the drawer runs the length of the inside of the desk. Beautiful Mahogany Wood finish on the outside. In very good condition for the age. There are some small missing parts inside, but the piece can still function as a travel desk. Makes a beautiful display piece and collectible. Inside the desk was an early newspaper article about a Captain John Julius Guthrie who was the executive officer of the sloop of war Saratoga who captured a slave ship at the mouth of the Congo River in 1861. It says this was the last slaver captured by an American warship and the captain then resigned and entered the confederate service. The article is a letter to the newspaper written by the son of the captain and he points out that the slave ship was owned, manned and equipped in the city of Boston, Mass. It is possible that the desk was later used by this man, but I am not sure- it was left in the desk, and I can include it if the buyer is interested. Desk measures 20" long. 11&

Over the next two weeks I am listing a HUGE selection of BEAUTIFUL RARE Antiques& Collectibles which all came from a Southeastern New Jersey Estate. This is a stunning antique 19th Century lap desk. A beautiful mid to late 1800's made desk. With the lock reading Bramah Patent on the lock. The exterior made of gorgeous dark Rosewood. With heavy brass ormolu mounted edges& line inlay. With two fantastic fold flat campaign style handles. A large original lock on front and brass inlay name plate. Which has not been engraved. Interior has a centerpiece felt writing surface. which the outer green gilt edge is original but the felt center replaced. The shorter side has a folding surface which opens to a walnut lined compartment. It has two slide locks to hold it in place. The opposite side has a folding surface as well which shows a ... morewalnut compartment which is removable. Then an ebonized wood at the end which holds pens. Inkwell etc. Underneath inside the compartment are three hidden drawers with cloth pulls. Then a side lock on one side which when pulled up releases the exterior hidden drawer. The piece is stunning and large. It does need some work. I don't have a key. There are extra original brass mounts and inlay inside for fixing. Just found at an estate sale here in Boston a really really nice and completely original American Federal 1820s writing desk with side drawer. Nice Period inkwells. Amazing condition for being almost 200 years old. Nice period piece and very hard to find. All of the hinges are strong including the writing compartments. Nice ivory inlay on the skeleton key face and a wonderful lock mechanism. I've been told this is military because of all of the brass reinforcements. I think it still could be a desk for very wealthy individuals. the very long drawer pulls out smoothly and on very solid condition. Great dove tailing and nice chamfered areas on the drawers backside. Both ends have a drawer handle but only one opens it up. The writing surface blotter board looks original. A little veneer loss on left inside edge. The top of the desk has areas ... morewhere the wood curves down then up. Not that noticeable. Dimensions are 21 1/2 long x 11 deep x 7 high. The last owner appears to have been an Elizabeth M Updike. Recently acquired it at an estate sale. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself. The lap desk is probably English made. But that is just a guess, you be the judge. F or your consideration is this walnut antique lap desk in very nice condition. The walnut case has a great luster to it. What makes this piece really unique is the secret slide drawer compartment. It can be opened by opening the case and then taking the brass rod out of the left side of the box that"locks" it in place. The previous owner was an Elizabeth M Updike from Princeton NY. The famous writer. John Updike, had a daughter named Elizabeth, ... morebut correspondence is too old to have been hers. Possibly and earlier family member as John was born in 1932. There are some wedding invitations from the early 1900s in this drawer, a letter that has Princeton 66 on it. Not sure if year, for 1966 or means something else. There is a letter to a Mr. E. M. Updike in the drawer as well from a Turnbull that accompanied a Liberty Bond Medal for WWI efforts in gather funds for the war effort(Princeton NJ Victory Liberty Loan Committee) It probably meant Mrs. but you know the government, they can't even get the sex of a party right in correspondence, eh? Another piece of paper with genealogical information on it talking about Updike's grandfather Samuel Montgomery(1816-1878) married to a Matilda Stockton. Also a mention of a Samuel Updike and his children in this same piece. Also correspondence to Elizabeth Updike in 1927 from Wm Ball& Sons in West Chester. PA. Price lists and pictures of hardware which me thinks was probably to address the missing handle on the one side of the lap desk. Overall a sturdy piece and it certainly appears it was taken care of through the years. We don't know much about furniture. Stunning Antique Walnut Lap Campaign Desk Brass Inlay 1800s? Secret Compartment
Here is a great Antique Lap Writing Desk for your buying consideration. Recently acquired it at an estate sale. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself. The lap desk is probably English made. THE PREVIOUS OWNER SAID IT BELONGED TO HIS GRANDFATHER IN ENGLAND. F or your consideration is this walnut antique lap desk in very nice condition. The walnut case has a great luster to it. What makes this piece really unique is the secret compartment with 2 small drawers. There is a board that runs the length of the case just under the inkwell and pen holder section. The secret compartment board still in place and you Just push down on right side and it springs out. Amazing that it is all there and still works. All still there behind the secret panel and there are white bone knobs on each drawer. My guess is this pieces dates to the early to ... moremid 1800s. You be the judge before buying. This lap desk is beautiful with only small surface scratches. The corners have brass corner pieces. One of the leather pieces needs re gueing but i am leaving that too the new owner. Very nice wood and graining. The inside folding pieces are still all there as well. The lock and latch is there and comes with a key that operates the lock. That does not happen very often with a piece of this one's age anymore. The top of the desk has leather dark material on it which is hard and shows some wear. Both sides of the lap desk open for storage. Has open areas for two ink bottles in the well areas. One on the left and one on the right. Very RARE that both ink wells are with the piece obviously one had red ink and the other black. And a storage area for the pens that has a wood cover. Two other storage areas between the pen area and ink holder, The brass top piece is in place, cannot see any engraving on it and the brass piece around the lock keyhole is also in place. I see no maker mark on the lock mechanism. The lap desk measures 17-15/16" wide. 6-13/16" tall and is 9-5/8" wide. Don't miss out on this unique item. VERY RA

This lovely antique drop front desk is solid mahogany and a true statement piece. It features a seashell scroll design carving. Original fancy brass gallery, key and decorative pulls. However, the fabric on the interior desk surface is worn and torn along the hinge area. It can still be used as a desk but the fabric needs to be replaced if you want the hinge restored. The wooden box, we think it is walnut, features brass hardware, as you can see in the photos, the lock, the inset on the cover, and straps around the corners, etc. The box measures approx. 13 ⅝" by 8 ¾" by 5 ¾" standing approx. 19 ¼" tall with the stand. When you open the desk. You can see the desk top panels are covered in a textured black paper with gold gilt trim. The finish of the wood has a wonderful glow to it, along with signs of age and use, such as surface scratches and little nicks, as well as mystery stains. We found an old hand written name on one of the wood pieces- T W Cox. We took photos of it, so that you can see for yourself. Antique Georgian Writing Box Lap Desk Chippendale Style Stand Brass Inlayed
This antique writing desk I believe it is from the very early 1800’s. There are some unique things that I think make the desk. I have the invoice From B. Manheim( The Antique Treasure House of The South) New Orleans. La. Sold to Mrs. Robert K. Drew Milwaukee Journal Co. 7/13/ 1964. Georgian Lap Desk 125.00 Chippendale style legs 50.00. Also there are small notes to show the buyer how to open things. So the buyer bought this 50 years ago. This I think is mahogany and inlayed brass with lock( I do not have the key) There are hidden drawers that many of these had but this one has a built in tee handle key to actually bolt it to a table with built in screws. I tried to picture these) I am not sure if the ink well is original but it had come with it 50 years ago. The owner Mr. Drew was the Vice President of the Milwaukee Journal Co. and my employer ... morelong ago. The desk itself did have a crack in the inner tray and I showed how it was repaired over 50 years ago. Also there are two cracks at the corners on the top. These were also there for over 50 years. The outside has tempered to a light golden color and the top has some stains. I have never tried to recondition it as to me it enhances the antique look of the piece. It measures 16” wide by 12” front to back and is about 6 ½” deep. The Chippendale style legs are floor to bottom of desk 14 ½” So together it stands about 20” tall. This is a gorgeous antique. Circa 1840 rosewood lap desk. Includes the key. 2 silver ink bottles, porcupine quill. There is brass inlay across the top and sides. Approx. Measurements: 13 7/8" x 9 1/4" x 4 5/8" There are six compartments on the inside: 2 for the silver ink bottles. 1 to hold items such as stamps. 1 for the porcupine quill. Which also has a lid. 1 which opens up to hold the stationary. 1 which opens up to hold the envelopes. There is a small crack across the top of the box but still in very good condition for its age. Brass Bound Walnut Lap Desk Good Interior Secret Drawers Key Mid 19th Century. The box measures 13 3/4 inches wide by 9 1/4 inches deep by 6 1/2 inches high. It retains almost all of the original finish and the brass has a dark patina. The leather on the writing surface looks original. The lock is a very old replacement. It is broken but still has a working key. The key will come inside the desk. I believe the desk is built with blind dovetails because if it were not it wouldn't be holding together so well. The secret drawers are below the little compartments along the front of the desk. The mechanism to unlock the drawers stll works very well. You just lift up on the section between the little compartments and the board hiding the drawers pops out revealing two drawers. It can be opened by opening the case and then taking the brass rod out of the left side of the box that"locks" it in place(rod with it needs to have end taken off) My guess is this piece dates to the mid to late 1800s. You be the judge before ... morebuying. This lap desk is beautiful with only small surface scratches. The corners are seamed together. A slice of veneer alongside the secret drawer is missing. There are a number of veneer pieces that are loose and come with the case to be put back in to place. Very nice wood and graining. The inside folding pieces are still all there as well. The hinges are all there. The lock and latch are not with the case. The top of the inside of the desk has a green felt fabric on one side that is pretty worn and is missing on the other side. The desk has two brass handles to carry it by on the sides that are still in place. Top of the case shows some splitting of the wood from drying out on the right side. Rest of case looks pretty good. There was a knot in the wood in the back where the knot fell out sometime after the case was made. Chip out of the wood on the front right side just before the brass support piece. There was probably an insert of bone or brass on top of case where a piece of wood is now set in that place. The brass corner and support pieces on this case are all in place. An excellent highly figured mahogany and brass Victorian campaign style portable writing desk with three hidden drawers. Original finish and gold embossed leather writing surface(that needs to be replaced. 18" x 10" x 7" high. Has a lock but no key. I don't know if lock works. Minor age related drying cracks. In excellent as found condition.

Ships captains and sailors brought back similar brass bound lap desks during this time. The base measures ... more11 ½” by 18 ¾” and the height to the center of the tambour is 8 ¾” When you pull out the bottom draw the tambour slides back into the case. You can then open the lap desk which rest on the open draw. In the back is a sectioned gallery that you pull up and it locks in place. Everything works perfectly and the only problem with this China Trade Campaign Desk is an old patch to the lower left hand corner of the folding writing surface. The writing surface has also been recovered. There are no other problems and you will find this original Mechanical Tambour Lap Desk is listed without any reserve. Antique American Mahogany Writing Desk Bureau with Brass Handles Made in 1800s
This is a very nice very heavy Desk Bureau made in USA circa 1820. There are a few little repairs to the flap but the rest of the desk is pretty good. The colors is a brown and slightly reddish. The drawers and the flap has satinwood string inlay. There are small areas were some is missing, it sits on splayed feet and has brass handles which may not be the original ones. The back and the drawer linings again are all original with dovetail joints to the drawers. Its fitted with 2 envelope drawers to the interiors and many small drawers with a few small brass handles missing. But we will try and find these before its sold. The slides work fine to support the flap. Measurements are 42 wide 20 deep. 43 high. This has been cleaned polished at some time and is in pretty good condition. if you need any more information please call 561 804 6700.

Antique 1800's CAPTAIN's ROSEWOOD & BRASS FOLDING LAP DESK~HIDDEN COMPARTMENTS!
I bought this from a very old estate in Vermont. Mostly 19c and older furniture and items. The lap desk is described as a Ship Captains lap desk or folding travel desk. It is made of Rosewood with Brass strapsand corners. It is in remarkable condition. There is a secret compartment where the vertical panel below the script pens and ink is released by lifting up the left hand divider where there is a spring clip under the wood. The panel springs out to reveal three drawers. One drawer is missing the tiny knob. It measures 20"inches by 10"inches and 7"inches tall. Dark blue velvet on the writing service. There. Early antique writers box. Has crack on top as seen. Also a crack pointed out in photo. Besides that it is all clean and nice. Very sturdy and good to use. Leather looks good. Has key and lock. Key turns lock mechanism but it will not lock it for some reason. Old repair inside box where the crack is going through from top. Sides and bottom are really nice and clean.
