Civil War Era Mahogany & Flamed Mahogany Desk Organizer with Secret Drawers
Up for auction is a beautiful Mahogany Desk Organizer that is more than likely out of a Mid 1800's Spinet desk. This organizer is in very nice shape with it's original leather missing where the writing surface would be. Organizer has two hidden drawers with finger cutouts so that they can be accesses by the owner.but don't tell anyone. It will be our little secret. This organizer is well made and finger jointed on top with what I believe is Pine. Organizer is 34.25" wide x 19" deep and 10" tall. There is a few pieces of missing veneer on the front of the cabinet cubbies, but does not take away from this piece. This would make a great mail/office organizer in a small aparment/ office. This is a mid 1800's civil war era field officers desk. For it's age. It is in good condition! It still has the original leather with gold leaflet and all moving components of the desk work perfectly. This includes a spring action door revealing two hidden compartments containing original pen tips as well as a penny red stamp! The pen tips as well as the stamp are included in this rare auction! The leather has separated partially at the folding point of the two wooden top pieces and there is a small crack in the top as well as the bottom. Early Traveling/Writing Desk. Very nice. Very early traveling desk in good used traveled condition. This is only a guess based on my knowledge of materials and construction methods but I would think this desk to be at least 150 years old and quite possibly much older than that. There is as you would expect age splits chips. Lost of finish, the brass hinges are getting weak, and maybe some screws tightened or replaced. I also though the old ink stains very charming and important to the desk. For sale is a: Antique Civil War Era Writing Desk Game Table Cabinet Square Nails VERY nice condition hardware good pre owned condition as seen in pictures- could use some minor restoration. The knob on cabinet door does not look original otherwise a beautiful piece Drawer is nicely worn on bottom slides with patina wear from use with burl wood accents. Dark oxidation on back wood, which we think is poplar, front dovetail with rear peg construction drawer, all of these are solid indicators of age and authenticity Some blocks were added on bottom underside corners to install caster wheels which will be included with purchase Lock needs key and we do not know if it functions. It appears intact Original finish. We have never oiled wax or cleaned this piece with anything other than a very slight damp cloth ever A long time ago we were told to ... moredo this to preserve the original finish. Antique Civil War Era Fold Up Lap Desk Wood Veneered Traveling Writing Slope
This is a Beautiful 19 th Century Traveling Lap Desk. The box is covered in a wood veneer and has an inlay circle on the lid and around the key hole. The writing surface is covered in green velvet and is original to the piece. The hinges are original and in good repair. In addition to storage under the writing surfaces. There are four compartments, one of which is covered. The bottom of the desk is covered in green felt. The box is in very good aged condition. There are few places were the veneer has broken and there are some age or shrinkage cracks to the wood(see pictures) The box is 14” across. 9” wide, and 5” tall. It was procured at an Antique Estate Auction in Central Kentucky.

19th Century Civil War Era Slanted Antique Lap Writing Desk Orig. Ink Btl & Key

The interior appears to be mahogany. The desk has its original square metal ink case and bottle. There is a compartment for writing utensils with a curved resting place for holding the instrument. Antique Civil War Era Roll Top Desk with Hutch
Roll Top Desk Up for sale is an antique roll top desk. This belonged to my mother for more than 50 years. She got it from a family whose grandfather(a civil war officer) owned it during late 1800's. The left side bottom needs to be re-glued. The dowels are there but no longer stay together. It is only an issue when we have moved it and then only if we didn't keep it held together. It is very solid with no movement when it is in place. At one time(a LONG time ago) water was spilled on it and it has some staining. Mostly on the left. It could be refinished. But can be used and displayed as is with no real detraction from its looks. The pictures make the uneven finish stand out much more than in person. The top piece of wood(under the curio cabinet) is in moderate condition and has a crack along the top. The roll top works very nicely ... moreand it will lock the drawers if closed all the way. I do not have the key. So in order not to have crawl under the desk with a screwdriver. The top should not be pushed all the way down until it locks. It has 2 pull out writing surfaces. One is shown in the pictures. It has 2 little drawers by the pigeon holes that work. At one time my mom glued some paper to them and some of that is still stuck on. I have not tried to get it off. As long as my mom had it. It has had the curio cabinet screwed securely to the top. This is a beautiful piece that makes a very nice display area. It measures 45" tall to the top of the desk. 48" wide and 30" deep. The cabinet measures 40 1/2" wide x 35" tall x 10" deep. Normally I would never sell this but we are moving out of state and simply do not have the room in the truck or the new house for it. This is pick up only Thousand Oaks California. We ... moreare always intrigued with these and they are always found in the old dark Civil War era finish which is kind of grungy and doesn’t show the walnut right. So. We brought it into the restoration shop to hand strip(which takes a long time, but is well worth it to leave the patina or original color in the wood) hand sand meticulously throughout, stain the same factory color and applied multiple coats of hand rubbed lacquer until it builds up a beautiful semi glow lustrous finish such as this. It has the original glass, original triple adjustable shelves, we had to replace some of the center slats and the crest is original. Everything on this desk is original except for the exterior finish and the felt that we replaced. The cabinet dates from the 1860s era. We are fortunate enough to get one or two of these every year, but we scour the entire United States to obtain the rare and hard to find items such as this. This desk has gothic block pyramid columns down on the base with spoon carving on the incise carved and picture frame panel doors that open for a large space that probably had a shelf previous. This is a mid 19th century leather covered campaign lap desk that was typically used by civil war officers and others. The leather cover is missing from the top front edge and part of the top side edge(see pics) The cloth pulls on the writing surfaces inside are also missing and have been replace by paper pulls. Otherwise. The desk is complete. There are numerous scratches and dings in the finish and there is no key for the lock. In the closed position, the desk measures 8 and 7/8 inches by 12 and 7/8 inches by 4 and 1/2 inches. The opened desk measures 12 and 7/8 inches by 18 inches. Interior has black lacquer finish and leather writing surface with gold embossed decoration. Lots of extras included: two pens with steel nibs. Civil War Era Lap Desk Attributed To Levi L Thaxter RARE IMPORTANT LOOK!!!
This piece is inscribed as being given to the owner by Levi L. Thaxter in 1923 and was owned and used by his father during the Civil War. The house of Levi Lincoln Thaxter House. Corner of Main and Cuba Streets. In 1882 it was moved to this site from where the Town Hall is located now. It was built circa 1815. Levi L. Thaxter was married to writer. Poetess, and artist, Celia Thaxter. He was Harvard educated, a lawyer, well known in the literary circles as a man of culture and refinement. Levi, always in search of a career, was best known for his readings of poetry by Robert Browning. The desk was given to Alexander Zographos and was then traded for renovation work to George Gustler of Surf City. NC. in the 1990's. We have done a cleaning on the piece and tried to save as much of the original vainer but some was un-salvageable. This is ... morea very rare and important piece for any collector so look close at it for your collection. Nothing has been added to enhance the piece it is completely in its original state. The desk measures 22 1/8" wide. 22 3/8" opened, 8" tall and 11" thick. The piece is un-restored and there is no documentation with the piece other than the original inscription on the underside of the panel. Civil War Era Lap Desk Stripe Grained Mahogany Veneer 1850s-1860s
Civil War Era Portable War or Lap Desk. Wood is stripe grained mahogany veneer. The gilded handles on each side were added later. Probably 1870-80. The dimensions of the desk are 22.5" length X 12" wide X 8" high. It weighs 15 1/2 pounds before packing. The interior is in fairly good condition, it has a few nicks and dings but no major defects other than a knothole that goes through on the bottom. It has several removable compartment covers and the fabric which covers the flipping compartment covers has split into two sections. Antique Inlaid Mahogany Lap Desk with Ink well dated 1862! This is a beautiful lap desk. Made with choice grade mahogany with a quality of graining in the wood that is basically non-existent in todays world. Take a close look at the photos this is one lovely little lap desk. As you can see the original glass ink well with the pewter lid is marked Patented Feb. 4 1862. Measurements Top: 12 inches long by 10 inches deep by a litter over 6" inches tall Condition This is an original period piece and is in very good condition but as an original it will have a few signs of its age. It was professionally refinished quite some time ago and the original hinges were replaced as is common. It does have a few spots of wear and the inlay is not present near the lock. Civil War Era officers travel writing desk English Style with Secret Drawers
Antique traveling writing desk. Believed to be civil war era. Officers desk. Beautiful wood and lovely to just look at with the brass corners. Writing desk closed is 19.25 x 10 x 6.5" Comes with one antique glass ink bottle, without the cap. There are carry handles made of brass that fold flush against the desk when not in use. There are two special features, TWO secret compartments. Open the writing area. Remove a corner peg and out pops the specret compartment with two drawers. I was told the three knobs are ivory and appear to be original. Remove the large brass pin inside. And open the brass handle on the outside and another secret comparment. A drawer that is the full length of the desk. The writing board will need to be reattached in the center where the fold is, but the piece of ribbon to lift the writing board is still intact. ... moreThe hinge needs attention. and the other hinge is missing. The brass plate for the key on the front of the desk is not there. There is no key. The fabric on the writing surface appears to be original. The brass corners and the brass handles also appear to be original. There is a brass plate inlaid on the top, no inscription, and this is orignial I am sure. The wood has some cracks, but I really think this adds to the character and given the age, not a detraction. This would make a wonderful gift for that special writer or poet in your life. There is something about using a piece of history that gives you a special approach to writing. Now I am not a writer, but love antiques and was graced with two beautiuful writing desks, and only have room for one. This graceful desk will be packed and shipped with great care. 16526 Antique Victorian Walnut Butler’s Secretary Desk - Civil War Era
We are pleased to be offering today this gorgeous Victorian oversize 107” tall butler’s walnut secretary desk that came in recently. We are always intrigued with these and they are always found in the old dark Civil War era finish which is kind of grungy and doesn’t show the walnut right. So. We brought it into the restoration shop to hand strip(which takes a long time, but is well worth it to leave the patina or original color in the wood) hand sand meticulously throughout, stain the same factory color and applied multiple coats of hand rubbed lacquer until it builds up a beautiful semi glow lustrous finish such as this. It has the original glass, original triple adjustable shelves, we had to replace some of the center slats and the crest is original. Everything on this desk is original except for the exterior finish and the felt that we ... morereplaced. The cabinet dates from the 1860s era. We are fortunate enough to get one or two of these every year, but we scour the entire United States to obtain the rare and hard to find items such as this. This desk has gothic block pyramid columns down on the base with spoon carving on the incise carved and picture frame panel doors that open for a large space that probably had a shelf previous. If the buyer would like us to put a shelf behind the doors, we will do so if you tell us at the time of purchase. The cabinet also features panel sides all the way up, which a cheap one would not as it would be plank sides, but this one is walnut all the way. There is Cornish molding all the way around the shapely two doors that open to reveal a triple shelf adjustable height interior, carved columns with diamond points for motifs and big leaves are carving in with dainty little cornices. The top of the cabinet has a double wide crown molding and a large center finial broken arch top. It doesn’t get much better than this.
