There is a tight split in the lid. One piece of inlay is missing, the"keeper" on the writing surface is missing, and the ribbon to open the bottom writing surface is missing. Please refer to the photos for a complete description of condition. The camera captures the felt as blue, but my eyes tell me it is a purple color. Made of rosewood, c. 1830- 1850. The canterbury is larger than most, measuring 24" tall, 26.5" wide, and 17" deep. It retains its original brass wheels. The form is quite unique and ornate, especially compared to the usual Georgian and Regency styles of the 1830s. The piece in excellent condition. With a fine rich rosewood finish. There is one old repair where a circular dowel was added, and another small square area where the wood was repaired. Both of these are insignificant and hard to detect. The box measures 15" wide, 10½" deep, and 5½" tall(I believe this is large for a writing box of this age) You must look at the photographs to appreciate the beauty of this piece! The top is adorn with delicate designs. Separated by thin strips of metal. Gold gilding, mother-of-pearl, and various shades of inlaid wood make up the floral/vine-like center and the borders around it. This exceptional partner's desk is in the Queen Anne style/ design and probably dates from the late 1890s to the early 1900s. I believe the main wood to be rosewood. It is in great original found condition with the ordinary wear consistent for the age and use. There appears to be no damage. Or missing pieces. The stretcher base is separated( unglued- not broken) in one place in the center but can be put back together with little difficulty. The carvings are all well done and seem to be of some Oriental designs. The surface, drawers, sides and legs are all exceptionally carved. The three drawers are dovetailed and each have the original hardware. Each drawer as a whole is divided into halves such that each drawer goes the entire width of the table. Antique Rosewood Lap Writing Desk, Stenciled Border 1860's
A very attractive wooden lap writing desk in rosewood. Crafted in America in the mid-19th Century. Nice diamond stenciling on top and front bandings. The writing surface is a rose felt that shows pretty normal wear from 150 yrs or so of use. There is also a writing utensil compartment inside. All exterior wood areas are in good order. No cracks or breaks. There is however some old tape residue on the top surface that can be removed with some patience and skill. Its a nice size at: 11.5" long x 8" wide x 4" tall. It weighs approximately 5 lbs.

Measurements: 13 7/8" x 9 1/4" x 4 5/8" There are six compartments on the inside: 2 for the silver ink bottles. 1 to hold items such as stamps. 1 for the porcupine quill. Which also has a lid. 1 which opens up to hold the stationary. 1 which opens up to hold the envelopes. There is a small crack across the top of the box but still in very good condition for its age. I bought this from a very old estate in Vermont. Mostly 19c and older furniture and items. The lap desk is described as a Ship Captains lap desk or folding travel desk. It is made of Rosewood with Brass strapsand corners. It is in remarkable condition. There is a secret compartment where the vertical panel below the script pens and ink is released by lifting up the left hand divider where there is a spring clip under the wood. The panel springs out to reveal three drawers. One drawer is missing the tiny knob. It measures 20"inches by 10"inches and 7"inches tall. Dark blue velvet on the writing service. There. Circu 1820's by what I could find in my research. Its finish, internally and externally is excellent. sometimes refered to as"Ship's Captain's" desks. Davenports had a compact design that took up very little space. Reputed to have gotten their name from the inventor. Captain John Davenport, back in the days of Clipper Ships trading to the Far East. This Davenport Desk is a beautiful example of old world workmanship enhanced with inlaid designs. The top of the desk is tan leather with an embossed design running along the perimeter. The Desktop slides forward for a better writing position. And had a hinged lift top with inside storage and 1 usable drawers. The inkwell ... moredoor on the desktop does not latch. But is still in great shape. The Drawers on the Left are fake. Allowing for the deep right side lockable drawers. The Fliptop desktop and sidedrawers are lockable. And the unit comes with 2 keys(Pictured) Antique item in excellent but not perfect condition. A few trim pieces are loose or missing, and there are some marks and chips in the rosewood venner. The Left Side Faux drawers have some splitting that is not as noticable from the outside. Usable as is with minor repairs. But deserving of a much more in depth restoration than I am capable of.
