Empire Biedermeier Antique 1820 Paymaster Desk. A marvelous example of Empire or"Biedermeier" furniture from the 1820's. This paymaster desk was used to record work hours and pay the staff in cash before the age of income tax. The slanting top has galleries to hold ledgers and journals. Distressed saddle leather in the center panel has an adjustable easel underneath. Drawers and the back of the case are all hand dovetailed. Inner surfaces are hand planed, drawers have oak sides. Wrought iron locks work with keys provided. Mahogany with matched flame grain has a superb gleaming finish. This well preserved antique from northern Europe has clean and contemporary lines. Offered for sale is this beautiful large antique secretary-bookcase in gorgeous solid wood. We think it is cherry. But will leave it to the lucky new owner to decide. The desk base is 44-1/2 inches high x 38-1/2 inches wide x 23-1/2 inches deep at its widest point. The top of the esk is 13 inches deep. The drop front reveals a complete contingent of pigeon holes and drawers. There are slide supports on either side that pull out to uphold the weight of the drop front, which becomes the writing surface. Below the desk are three deep storage drawers. The top drawer has hidden finger holds under the front of the drawer, and the lower two drawers have wooden knobs. The upper bookcase portion is 40 inches high x 34 inches wide x 11-1/2 inches deep. The beautiful molding at the top extends in both width and depth, and measures 13-1/2 inches deep ... morex 42 inches wide. There are two shelves plus the floor of the bookcase(making the third shelf) and the doors feature six panes of original blown glass. The key to the bookcase is present and correct. The bookcase affixes to the desk with long screws through the floor of the bookcase. This is a most handsome and imposing piece, and our photos do not do it justice. Dating back to 1830-1840 this"Secretary" desk has been lightly refinished. But not altered in any way to preserve all authenticity. 1860's Flame Mahogany Late American Empire Desk with Carved Corner Columns and Feet This estate item is ready to use as is. It has beautifully carved front corner columns and feet. The inner desk case and all drawers are dovetailed construction. The front dovetails of the drawers have been bulked up with added strips of wood that cover them up. but they are there! The back corners of the drawers are dovetailed as well. I pulled the inner case out so you can see the construction. Also there is rough cut wood on all drawer bottoms and back of inner case. In amazing original condition, this is a beautiful flame mahogany flip top empire secretary bookcase desk. Look ... moreat the flame mahogany that these cabinet makers used back before the Civil War, and it’s obvious that they were very talented. There is matched flame mahogany veneer across the hand-cut dovetail drawers and the flip down lid. It has the big, wide molded crown molded top, arched gallery center face with flame mahogany all over, and the individually paned doors with some of the original glass still in them, and the double shelf interior. There are two hand cut dovetail drawers underneath the glass doors, and it comes down into a base with a flip-top lid on which we have redone the felt with antique red. The three hand-cut dovetail drawers come down into a scrolled empire legged base. The glass has been replaced in two of the sections for sure, and maybe some other places. You can see some of the triangular points that holds the glass panes in. The cabinet is in great condition, with some wear marks on the sides, and they can be refinished easily. The overall size is 40 inches wide, 22 inches deep, 34 inches to the cabinet top, and 78 inches to the very top and comes apart in two sections. The three top surface boards have carved dagroon edge. The six drawers are bow fronted with flame veneers, the original glass knobs reeded. Includes the lock to both center drawer, the drawer interiors in maple and pine. The cross stretchers are squared and flame mahogany veneered. Desk measures 31" tall by 54" wide by 33" deep. From center half rosette at kneehole down to floor is 22-1/4" tall, by 15" deep to cross stretcher. A most impressive antique. Circa 1900, solid mahogany French Empire(circa 1800, or Napoleonic) desk. It has twelve tapered column supports collared in ormolu brass. The plinth column bases are connected by four serpentine stretchers to a center oval with footrest. The case sides and front drawer have ormolu brass mounts with swords, wreaths, rosettes, anf palmettes. The drawer handles have rosettes. Desk measures 30-3/4" tall by 48" wide by 29-1/2" deep. The distance from bottom of drawer to floor is 24" Very good plus condition: mahogany boards without chips or cracks, original glossy finish. A very nice antique. Circa 1840's, Empire flame mahogany veneers, mahogany, and mahogany stained maple, bookcase with butler's desk base. Two piece construction. The bookcase has mahogany"piecrust" bandings to the Gothic doors and the cornice. Original wavy glass panels. Interior with two adjustable maple shelves with flame mahogany fronts. Two ogee drawers are below. The butler's desk was a top drop down front with cubbyholes and single drawer. New green felt writing surface. Two long drawers below over case on mahogany bracket feet. Furniture measures 7'3" 87" tall by 3'10" 46" wide by 29" deep, the shelves 9" deep. Very good plus condition, very nicely refinished. Veneers without chips or repairs(gouge to the veneer on edge of case by butler's desk. All door knobs are original ... moreand matching. All six locks with keys present(missing the brass keyhole surround to one drawer. Both glass panels without damage. The left side and right side case boards have a vertical age crack.
