It is in two pieces and would look well in both an old or modern property in any downstairs room as a desk. The desk stands on square back legs and the most wonderfully shaped cabriole legs with a large diamond shaped front and carving of the leg. There is one large drawer and two smaller drawers eitherside of the kneehole. They are beautifully carved and have their original handles. The top itself is in good condition with a bull nosed edge and a few marks as one would expect leading to the top section. This section is set back standing on lovely round turned supports leading to a lift up flap that has ... morea lovely carved panel and its original handles leading to the most wonderful storage compartments behind. 1884 Roll Top Desk with Corbin Cabinet Lock(CCL. RollTop) Excellent heavy wood. Locking roll top desk. The top rolls over the open desk and locks with a key; doing so also locks the top drawer as well. The lock is made by CCL(Corbin Cabinet Lock) they've been around since the 1800's. It is a two piece unit; the roll top desk area can be separated simply by lifting it from it's base(drawer area) It's also easy to move around due to base mounted wheels. There are far more than enough'cubbyholes' for all your knickknacks; including three rarely found vertical side slots(1@ 17" 2@ 8 1/2" There are two small drawers and dual pen holders in this area as well(see photos) The desk top surface area has wooden bumper guards at both sides. The base leg/feet area is of a'closed architecture' type(as opposed to ... morean open back style; see photos) and sports 8 drawers with 2 hidden sleeves on either side that you pull to extend(~18" The desk top itself has various glass/cup ring stains(see photos) There is a two piece spring loaded internal mechanism which serves to prevent the top from moving around. One of these pieces has come loose(part is included) and looks to be fairly easy to repair. Even still. It's function is basically unnecessary, due to the weight of the roll top(it won't be moving/sliding around) Being internal, this mishap is entirely hidden from any viewpoint angle. One of the four wheels is missing. The framework of this wheel is still intact, but the'wheel' itself is not there. The other three wheels are fine; the desk can still be easily moved around by the remaining three. The only history on this desk that I could dig up was from the previous owners that say it was owned by their friends Great Grandfather; a North Carolina abolitionist politician who also apparently wrote books. Featuring a pierced brass gallery wrapping around shaped marble with turret corners over fluted fruitwood pillars with brass mounts. The drawer has original brass hardware with a strong lock in the middle, the keyhole a four-leaf clover lock guard, limiting the keys that can access the hole- this lock mechanism is mirrored on the drop-lid and on the pair of cabinet doors. The lid drops to reveal six small drawers and a few cubby-holes, all of the drawers hand dovetailed front and back, the bottoms bevelled to rabbet into the sides. It appears to have some newer brass finished handles and lock bezels. There are some very unique carvings along the top spindles and on the drop down leaf. There is a key for the desk lock. But it does not appear to work the lock. The wood appears to be solid cherry. Under drop front there is 1 pull out drawer& under that there is large door with 1 more shelf plus the bottom which totals 2 shelves. This Secretary stands 67" tall, measures 39" across the front and 14" deep from the front to the back. It's in very good vintage condition for it's age& will hold a great deal of items. There is no lock inside the key hole/lock compartment. It has recessed panels on both sides and back. The Roll Top slides up and down. Not a smooth slide. You have to hold both handles to open and close. It tends to stick when sliding. The flat surface of the desk appears to have been refinished at one time and it has a brownish stain on the desk. The top portion of the desk sets on the base. It does not bolt into the base. There are signs of wear in the form of scratches. Chips to the wood and repairs that I tried to show in the many photos. I am selling a very nice(and very large! antique secretary/desk/cabinet. This belonged to my husband's grandparents or great-grandparents. We believe it was made in the mid to late 1800s. We have other furniture of their's and we know that is when those were made. Therefore leading us to believe the same about this piece. We do not know for sure it's history- both of my in-laws passed away several years ago, so we cannot get the full history. This piece is in two sections: the top sits down in the bottom cabinet. The bottom section has two doors with two shelves inside that are great for storage. The top section has glass doors at the top, with three shelves inside. Under the glass doors are two door on the ends, with a pull down"desk" in the middle. There are small drawers and shelves inside that section. It is a gorgeous piece of furniture! The solid Walnut is in wonderful condition given the age of this piece. This is truly Unique. I have spent at least a couple of hours trying to research this piece or find one like it-I have not been able to find another like it! It is made of Solid Walnut. The wood has aged and seasoned beautifully. It was a true Craftsman that created this piece. The front is a Burl Walnut. Inside. There are five separate shelves. Two are removable. Three are attached to an arm and they swing forward and out. The desk surface has a track where two other arms come out and support the surface. These are of brass. The surface of ... morethe writing area is covered with velvet that was the covering of choice during that era. It is in Good to Very Good condition for the age. It does have some spots and stains on it. This is bordered with a veneer that I am not sure was wood or paper. It has peeled off in a couple of places, but is still in generally good condition. There are doors on each side of the piece that open up to reveal two small shelves on each side. These are the only thing that may not be original, but they may. They are a curved triangle. They do need to be glued in-I would say back in, but they do not look as if they were glued originally. I believe they were cut to fit very snugly without glue, but they would need to be glued to use with anything that has weight to it. The cabinet measures appx. 28" in width. 26" in height, 6" deep. The fold out writing surface comes out appx. 18" It weighs about 25 lbs. We will package it VERY carefully and would send it insured where applicable. The 2-piece Marquetry inlaid Rosewood Ladys Desk or Vanity in this auction is a fine example of what Alexander Roux was designing and making for the new affluent American Victorian Market. Underneath the inside small draw in the original Alexander Roux New York Label, which was printed between 1848 and 1867 when cabinet shop worked at this location. Decorated with gilded ormolu this small Victorian Louis XVI style vanity measures 17 ¼ deep by 28 1/8 wide by 28 1/8 tall and with the top section measures 48 tall overall. We have posted close to 40 photographs of this rare Roux vanity so you can see all the details and the few restorable problems. On the table top are two damages to the rosewood veneer. Nice Antique Circa late 1800's walnut slanted lap desk/writing cabinet. Brass hinged cover flips open to a removable felt writing surface with storage for documents and paper underneath. Two individual inkwell compartments are separated by a long compartment that stores pens and other writing materials. It is removable and does need some reinforcement(gluing) One glass inkwell remains. Very good condition with a minor crack in wood where it meets the left corner. The underside panel has separated but is still intact to piece. Lock and key still work well but need some adjusting to make it lock. The top section is set with moveable shelves. They are behind two glazed doors. These are next to, two large column supports with acanthus mouldings. Pat date on brass plate indicates 1878 and Moore was in business for about 15 years. In the Victorian age, Moore was General Manager for Wooton, left, and patented his own desk as a Wooton competitor. Additional info is available on the Wikipedia site as well as the Smithsonian site. A flat top desk with original leather top covering. The compact desk is constructed of two hinged pieces. One piece swings away on the hinges to create a desk top surface for work sitting. The swing away portion holds 25 cardboard files with brass hardware. The other piece houses slots for files vertical and horizontal as well as drawers with spoon carving. Overall. There's a"notch" on the front swing away piece. It is not original but has been there 40+ years that I know of for certain. And, a screw has been replaced on a side panel near a hinge, see the image. The original finish shows some minor rubs but again for it's age, the desk is in outstanding condition. The desk measures 46" length. 28" width/depth and 30 1/2" height You'll love this in your office. What a statement piece.

It has beveled mirror which does show its age. Has drop front pigeon hole desk. Has bow front. Left side has glass door that when opened has 3 adjustable removeable shelves. Right side has the drop front desk area. A nice size drawer for storage and at bottom has door that open for more storage. This door does stick and needs some TLC(end shaved) Finish is starting to alligator a little in places, sides mostly. Mirror shows its age with some graying or finish issues as shown.
