Early 19th C French Empire Bronze Mounted Cartonnier Desk w. Leather Top + Clock
Here is another top of the line item carrying a thrift shop price. This is a Mid 19th Century Napoleon III Boulle Bureau Plat(Bureauplat) Better yet Bronze Mounted Tortoise and Scrolling Brass Inlaid Leather Top Desk. This work of art can still be used for the purpose it was made for, however it is an eye candy with a writting surface covered in original dark(navy) blue Moroccan tooled leather(gold edges) wich has darkened with age to almost black appearance. Quality of bronze mounts is a 10+. They are classic French III Empire mounts, on the edges with saboes on the bottom. Cabriole legs matching in front and back, flanking a single drawer. Greatest feature of this desk is in it's inlay which carries many different prescious stones and metals, you will see in the photos(lapis, etc) There are areas of inlay where metal is other than brass, ... moresome silver in nature as well as copper. Also there are small nail heads throughout the piece, giving it an interesting detail. Unusual and great. Height is 30" to the top with 24" ample leg room underneath which is often not the case with period desks. Depth is 26.75" and it is 43" wide. If you want truly the best, this is a piece for you. The gold tooled leather writing surface on the top and the slides is original and has a few marks and scuffs which only serve to add character to this wonderful piece. This desk was crafted from solid mahogany and the drawer linings are solid oak with hand cut dovetails. The ormolu mounts. It truly is a work of art, but can still be used for the purpose it was made for. Two tone finish, a honey yellow in combination with ebonized black, same combo that made Biedermeier famous and popular. Aappearance and quality of bronze mounts- handles is a 10+. They are classical French Empire depicting dolphins on handles and Swans on escutcheons. Here we have for auction a stuning Napoleon III Empire style mahogany and brass inlaid twin pedestal desk dating to the mid 19th century. This beautiful example has a moss green baize inset top over a bank of three frieze drawers being raised on twin pedestals with column detailing on spread pad feet. The cupboard doors open to reveal sliding drawers and shelves. The desk is also finished to the rear in a similar style so could easily be used in the middle of a rom. The drawers are finished in similar brass inlay as are the cupboard doors and pedestals and a key is provided to open the drawers. A most impressive antique. Circa 1900, solid mahogany French Empire(circa 1800, or Napoleonic) desk. It has twelve tapered column supports collared in ormolu brass. The plinth column bases are connected by four serpentine stretchers to a center oval with footrest. The case sides and front drawer have ormolu brass mounts with swords, wreaths, rosettes, anf palmettes. The drawer handles have rosettes. Desk measures 30-3/4" tall by 48" wide by 29-1/2" deep. The distance from bottom of drawer to floor is 24" Very good plus condition: mahogany boards without chips or cracks, original glossy finish. The three board top has traces of blotter? removal that has effected the finish, but no gouges or scratches.

LIGHTING FRENCH EMPIRE ORMOLU MOUNTED MAHOGANY ABATTANT SECRETAIRE First Quarter of the 19th Century Item# 1402VPP28-X An exceptional piece both in it's petite presentation and sense of balance. The craftsman of this precious drop-front secretary desk( secrétaire à abattant) showed exceeding care in every aspect of his creation. A vivid and active work, the brilliant mahogany veneers are burnished into a deep shine with the French polished finish, highlighted with gilded ormolu mounts throughout- these may or may not be original to the work, but their presence without a doubt elevates and completes the form. The delicate writing surface drops open under a heavy bolted steel lock, functional and retaining it's original ... morekey, revealing a selection of two small drawers flanking a larger central drawer. All five drawers are hand dovetailed oak secondary woods with a chamfered bottom set in grooves on either side and nailed(modern nail) along the back edge for stability. The writing surface is clean and remains in fine condition with a replaced leather top; the surface is probably not ideal for functional use, as the weight of arms and leaning would not be healthy for the long term preservation of the desk, but it is very much a stable and strong surface for presentation. Above the surface is a broad single drawer. Tucked beneath the mahogany top and flanked by beautiful round columns and seven-pointed stars on either corner. This drawer, as well as the drawer beneath the writing surface, is constructed in a manner identical to the interior drawers. The whole of the desk is raised on a pair of thick tapered mahogany columns with pressed brass rings capping and footing the columns; these are exceptionally well detailed with a series of impressed stars and foliage over the checkered cylinder.
