The desk retains the original photograph from when it was retailed by Jacques Bodart, Inc. during the first quarter of the 20th Century, noting this as#1681. It is a gorgeous piece, the original gilt highlighted tooled green leather preserved in remarkable condition, framed in well patinated molded mahogany over five drawers. The desk rests over four tapered and stop-fluted legs with square brass caps over each leg and terminating in plain brass capped feet. Jacques Bodart. Inc. crafted very fine reproductions of Louis XVI 18th and 19th Century antique furniture, marketing these to interior designers and decorators around the country from their showroom in New York City. This is a simply outstanding selection, only more so due to the fine patina and character developed throughout, perfect for home decorators and those passionate about original French designs. Measurements: 55 1/8" wide x 28 1/4" deep x 30" high; wings are 12 3/4" across when fully extended. 21 5/8" deep. Condition Report: Nice patinated and almost certainly original surface. Sunbleached on the front and sides, color well preserved in the back. Very minor dings and abrasions here and there throughout, including minor blemishes and stains to the leather top. No key. Very unusual carved desk with drawers and storage. The wood appears to be dark stained Walnut. The desk is 25 inches wide. 11 1/2 inches deep and 12 1/2 inches tall. The piece was made in the late 1800's and would be ideal for a computer table or as an office cabinet to store important data. There are three 7 inch wide drawers on the left side with a full 22 inch wide top drawer. On the right side is a 7 x 7 door to a storage area. Under this is another 7 inch wide drawer. The center opening is partitioned to take stationary and accessories. Really nice, usable old piece. It is obvious the desk has been used a lot through the years. The top shows quite a bit of staining from ink. Etc. Structurally the piece is strong and secure. On the door panel on right side there is a chipping around the knob. This is a Victorian 54-inch-wide roll-top desk of solid black walnut with molded panels and carved handles. That dates from the 1880 era. ... moreIt has been completely stripped, re-glued, refinished, the canvas roll has been all re-canvassed, and we had to re-fabricate one handle(bet you can’t tell which one when you see the desk! Any molding damaged was replaced, any panels that were damaged were replaced, any wood damaged or ink-stained was replaced– we do one heck of a job when we go through a desk! The interior has burl walnut pencil trays and cubby drawers, and the original letter holders on both sides of the desk. We’ve even replaced the felt insert with the original factory dark green color. It has an applied beveled edge base, and a finished off back. We always put a reproduction roll-top lock in, which will be done before shipping. The overall size is 54 inches wide, 36 inches deep, 30 inches high to the writing surface from the floor, and 50 inches high to the top of the desk. The lock mechanism prevents the drawers from opening when the roll-top is down. There is an old slide lock which seams to have been added a very long time ago to keep the Slant Front door closed. On the inside there are 16 various size compartments and one small drawer. The original glossy finish has been revarnished over the years and is very well preserved with enough wear for warm antique patina. There are stains. Mars at the edges, shrinkage separations from age and ink stains for character. Waxed and polished, only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth is needed to maintain its luster. The secretary case at top has a drop forward writing surface. Below are three long drawers with carved nuts and leaves grips. The drawer interiors are maple. Carved Victorian Walnut Library Table Gothic Quatrefoils & Sawtooth Trim
Original late 19th century(gorgeous from every angle) carved walnut desk. The original brass pulls are well intact. The drawer pulls with ease and it has a lock with no original key. The finish wood at the top and sides of the desk is a fine tight burl veneer. The desk top has been re-covered in its past with a tapestry with chrysanthemums and/or peonies. There are holes, pulls and wear into the tapestry. There is some surface wear in the wood at the corners and areas where one would expect from an item that has seen continued use. It is all intact& strong. At the top are a few very small pieces of burl veneer missing. but the tiny spots are old and smooth from, as above mentioned, continued use.
