A wonderful example of the Eastlake style. This piece is estimated to have been produced around 1890, toward the end of the Victorian era of design. The simplicity of design of this splendid piece is more in the lightly adorned style that Eastlake preferred. Much of his work was interpreted with more embellishment. Generally disdained by the influential designer. This example in finished in butternut glaze on solid cherry wood. Details such as the unique drawer facing dovetailing are common to the designs of Eastlake. We brought it into the restoration shop to hand strip(which takes a long time, but is well worth it to leave the patina or original color in the wood) hand sand meticulously throughout, stain the same factory color and applied multiple coats of hand rubbed lacquer until it builds up a beautiful semi glow lustrous finish such as this. It has the original glass, original triple adjustable shelves, we had to replace some of the center slats and the crest is original. Everything on this desk is original except for the exterior finish and the felt that we replaced. The cabinet dates from the 1860s era. We are fortunate enough to get one or two of these every year, but we scour the entire United States to obtain the rare and hard to find items such as this. This desk has gothic block pyramid columns down on the base with spoon carving on the incise carved and picture frame panel doors that open for a large space that probably had a shelf previous. Walnut with matched flame burl panels. The finish is in excellent condition on this American made antique. There are shrinkage separations for character, see photos. The pull out desk is lined with contrasting curly or"birdseye" maple. The writing surface is natural saddle leather. Tiny drawers inside have hand cut dovetail joints and chamfered bottoms, two also have false bottoms with secret drawers. The removable bookcase has wavy glass mirrors that appear original. Monumental Rococo Victorian Transitional Mahogany Carved Butlers Secretary
This is another piece out of my personal stash that I reluctantly need to move. It's a huge desk with so many things going for it. I expect it was made by Mitchell and Rammelsburg even though there is no mark or tag. Very similar in appearance to other examples they made. Is a three piece unit comprising of a base with marble top. Bookcase and crest. All original cleaned finish in superb condition. Tennessee sausage marble tops the base if the butlers desk and bookcase sits above on a step-back. Original wavy seedy glass and crest. Desk needs nothing and is very impressive. It's rare to see a desk like this that is crotch mahogany and not walnut, in this case the mahogany looks better and I'm sure the manufacturer decided that it did too. The large drawers could hold bulky sweaters, puzzles, or sports equipment. It is 69" H x 42" W x 24 1/4" D. In the secretary portion the top drawer is 30 1/2 x 14 1/4 and the small drawers are 8 1/2" x 14 1/4" The large drawers are 32 3/4" x 19 1/4" and range from 4" to 6 1/2" deep. Here is an terrific mid-late 19th century flame mahogany column step back secretary with fold out desk. Turned legs and glass door bookcase or storage& display cabinet above and three large functional bureau drawers below. I've detailed the restoration work this lovely piece will need to bring it back to it's former full value in my detailed description of condition above and in my multiple photographs included to accurately represent the design, quality, condition and construction as well as the overall beauty and potential of this marvelous old piece of mahogany furniture bargain priced as a restoration project. It has had a few small professional repairs to the veneer previously. This wonderful cabinet travels easily in two pieces and stands 68 1/2 inches tall by 42 1/2 inches wide and 20 inches deep front to back. The top ... morebookcase section measures 33 1/2 inches tall by 42 1/2 inches wide at the bonnet by 12 3/4 inches deep front to back. It has 12 panes of glass in it's upper cabinet doors and three small drawers run across the bottom within the top cabinet just below the two display shelves. The bottom bureau section measures 36 inches tall with a 35 inch tall flat surface height when the desk is closed and a 3/4 inch recessed space along the back for the upper bookcase to rest in. The base is 42 1/2 inches wide and 20 inches deep front to back and had three drawers. Inside the top bookcase the cabinet measures 25 1/2 inches wide by 8 1/2 inches deep and 28 inches tall. Divided by a shelf with 12 inches clarance below the shelf and 15 inches clearance above the shelf. Below the shelves but inside the cabinet doors are three small beautifully hand dovetailed drawers, 11 1/4 wide by 5 3/4 inch front to back by 2 3/4 inch deep with the center drawer of the three actually being only 11 inches wide. The desk top writing surface when open has a surface height of 33 1/2 inches and measures a nice large 39 3/4 inches wide by 14 3/4 inches front to back with pull out supports on both sides to support

This item is in the Eastlake style which is most easily identified by the round dovetails utilized on the drawers. Featuring the original finish, this piece had burl walnut posts on top of the exceedingly high bookcase and burl walnut panels in the base. The base has a large circular dovetail drawer and two burl walnut faced cabinet doors and an applied molded baseboard that supports the attractive cylinder desk and spindle gallery topped double door bookcase. Open the burl walnut panel cylinder to expose a burl walnut double drawer cubbyhole gallery. There is an old-time ink stain in the back. Which adds charm and character. The writing surface pulls out, ... moreand we have re-felted it in period looking green as the original was far too worn to be functional. On top of the cylinder roll, you'll see the two original wavy bubble glass doors that hold four adjustable shelves, and offers tons of storage. The shelves are fully adjustable for whatever you particular needs dictate. The bookcase doors are an impressive 43 inches tall and is topped by a multi-spindle raised panel incise carved back splash, which is often missing from desks like these. This desk is in good condition. Showing minor little nicks and dings typical of an original piece dating just post civil war era. There is a small aggravation on the left hand burl walnut post where the burl has lifted a little bit, but this is normal and is not a big deal. There is also a hair line crack on the bottom of the right hand door, which we would not restore, as it doesn't affect the piece. None of these issues are a big deal, but we mention them for full disclosure. The piece comes with one key, which is for the center drawer. We cannot guarantee the locks to work, as old time locks are finicky(especially after shipping) and usually need to be cleaned and oiled once they reach

This is the finest of Victorian cylinder secretaries-the best I have ever seen. It is enormous: 9' 4"high. And comes in THREE sections: the bookcase top, the middle with the cylinder roll, and the cabinet base. It measures 46 1/2" wide and is 30" deep. Most of it is solid walnut with decorated walnut veneers. The back of the bookcase top is a beautiful decorated birds-eye maple. It has four original, adjustable shelves, a pull out desk in the cylinder. The small drawers in this section are hand-dovetailed, not machined. There are carvings and little lions heads and all kinds of extra ornamentation on this piece. There is some veneer damage on the back side sections, as pictured, and a little veneer damage on the pull out of the desk. The handsome burl cylinder base is accented with fluting on the sides and the burl clad cylinder roll door is graced with ebonized knob pulls which appear to be original. With a rich complexion and a striking grain. Satinwood string inlays and flame mahogany crossbanding adorn the fall, providing a lovely contrast. Each drawer features ... morehand-cut dovetails and solid brass pulls(recently replaced) The brass escutcheons. While quite attractive, no longer house functioning locks except on the fall which does lock and includes a key. Each side has a horizontal line where the piece was obviously cut in half to remove from a home and put back together. These lines are purely cosmetic and don’t affect the structural integrity of the piece. During a past restoration, a line of black stain was applied to these separations to complement the actual dark inlay around the bottom. Inside the bureau desk part is a very nice mahogany work surface that measures 37″ wide x 22″ deep x 31.5″ from the floor. There are three small drawers and eight nooks for storing as well. When closed. The fall does not completely close(there are small gaps on either side) but does lock. All of the drawers open and close easily. You will see from the pictures that they do not close flush to the bureau, as we often see with solid wood antiques. Antique Primitive Painted Secretary Desk Victorian chest oak vanity cupboard bed
100 yr. Old Painted Desk We have several old antique items to sell at my folks old house that I thought would best be liquidated here on Ebay. This oak secretary or writing chest is absolutely wonderful and is so much more attractive in person than the pictures. Every authentic antique painted piece of furniture of this nature is original unique and of its own beauty and this one is no exception. Green color is rich and deeper green in person than with camera flash. The green is likely an old oil based enamel or lead paint. The top surface is glared in a couple pictures appearing a different color but it is the same green color as the rest of the cabinet. The paint is not flaking or pealing but is still very strong adhering all over. Loads of character and charm. The whole piece is solid as a brick and not rickety or wobbly. I don't see ... moreany repairs or cracks etc. Typical wear that would be indigenous to this period and stature. I took a close up of damage on interior of the door around the drop hinge arm. Drawers function well and door closes nicely. I particularly like the shaker style going narrower to the floor as seen in the side profile. The detail in curvature of the drawer fronts is unique as well. There has been no back on the cabinet for many years. I have seen hundreds of secretaries in my days but have never seen this particular style before. This little cabinet is simply divine and could be used in so many rooms of a home to suite your taste. We are always intrigued with these and they are always found in the old dark Civil War era finish which is kind of grungy and doesn’t show the walnut right. So. We are fortunate enough to get one or two of these every year, but we scour the entire United States to obtain the rare and hard to find items such as this. This desk has gothic block pyramid columns down on the base with spoon carving on the incise carved and picture frame panel doors that open for a large space that probably had a shelf previous. If the buyer would like us to put a shelf behind the doors, we will do so if you tell us at the time of purchase. The cabinet also features panel sides all the way up, which a cheap one would not as it would be plank sides, but this one is walnut all the way. There is Cornish molding all the way around the shapely two doors that open to reveal a triple shelf adjustable height interior, carved columns with diamond points for motifs and big leaves are carving in with dainty little cornices. The top of the cabinet has a double wide crown molding and a large center finial broken arch top. It doesn’t get much better than this. I believe the glass is the original glass because it has a look about it that does not compare to modern glass. It has a lift and slide piece of glass at top. Key holes. Pull down front. Compartments. Curves. Nice hardwood. I hope someone who appreciates the true beauty of antique furniture can make use of this for many years to come. Trying to get someone to help move this away from the wall so that I can take pictures of the back. There is the stagecoach information where this traveled from the east coast to the west coast. I believe it says in 1864. Its been a few decades since I saw it back there. The skeleton key locks the cabinet. No one walks in my door without commenting on it.
