There are brass accents and a lock mechanism. But no key. The sloped writing desk still contains the original wood pen holder(7 1/2" long, 2" wide and 3/4" tall) and the glass powder jar with cover(1" tall and 1 1/2" wide) There are bits of wood veneer missing on the top and corners. There is some staining. And a few minor rips to the black and blue velvet on the inside. There is scuffing and scratching on the bottom. An amazing. Substantial piece weighing twenty-eight pounds. This is an antique Victorian 1800s solid wood sloped travel lap desk with working brass lock and key. Featuring. Brass hinges and lock, blue felt writing surface with two storage compartments underneath. It has two inkwell compartments and the center section for pens lifts out. Found inside the center compartment was six nice quill pen ends and what appears to be some sort of pencil. The lapdesk wood looks beautiful and is undamaged. There is an inscription inside the box it is pictured and says that" This box was presented on December 25th 1852" So obvioulsy a Christmas gift. This is a one-of-a-kind handmade Antique Lap Desk. One of my favorite things that I have ever owned. I hope that someone finds it that appreciates the work that went into making something like this in the 1800's or better yet if the maker's descendants could find it. It measures 15.5" in length. 6" tall and 10" deep. It has thousands of tiny pieces of wood inlayed to create a beautiful scene which I believe may be from Germany. When you open the top it lays all the way back reveling the leather writing area. It has storage compartments in the top and bottom halves. It comes with two ink bottles. Under the section where you keep the pen is a secret compartment. Underneath the pen compartment is where the maker has recorded his name and date. There is a brass inlaid medallion with 3 initials"FROM" and another set of 3 initials. There is cracking. Splitting and some raised areas on the wood veneer. Victorian Inlaid Wood Traveling Lap Desk for Writing As Is Shown. 4" height 12 3/4" length 8 1/2" width This lap desk is in fair condition. There are some scratches and small gouges throughout the piece due to normal wear. The wood on the top of the case has chipped away along the bottom edge and along the bottom right edge. The wood has also chipped away around the corners of the piece. Some of the inlaid wood has been replaced(see pics) The floral design that has been inlaid into front is still intact. There are small white paint splatters on the top of the case. The wood trim is coming loose along the left side of the top half of the case. Some of the corners on this piece do not align tightly. Three of the ... morecorners appear to have been repaired before. There is a lock on the lower front half of the desk; the key is missing. There are two hinges on the back of the case. One side of each hinge has come loose from the case. The holes where the screws were secured have become worn down and too large. The inside of the lap desk is in good condition. There are no cracks or chips on the wood inside of the case. There is a purple velvet-like material inside the case that is still intact and has no rips or holes. The inside of the case also has a 1.5" deep slot with four seperate compartments. The largest compartment has a removable cover. Up for auction is a vintage looking wood inlay lap desk. Inherited from my father's house and I have no idea where he got it. Just know that it sat in his den holding stamps. Bills etc.before it came to me and served the same function in my office. Have now moved my office to home and have no more space for this useful and very attractive piece. It could be an antique Victorian lap desk as my father was always heading to auctions of all sort, and they were all the rage in Victoria's time or it could simply be a well done but more recent reproduction of a Victorian piece. I really do not know. Measures 13" wide x 10" tall. The front angled panel flips backward to reveal an inner compartment with seven separate sections. Beautiful old lap desk in burl walnut veneer. With original writing pads. Brass plate with brass corner straps, lock, and hinges. Only 11 3/4 wide, 8 3/4 inches deep, and only 5 inches high. Condition: The rear lap pad is detached. The lock mechanism is gone. The veneer. Though in excellent condition, is broken in the back, below the corner strap on the right side, see the picture. Over the next two weeks I am listing a HUGE selection of BEAUTIFUL RARE Antiques& Collectibles which all came from a Southeastern New Jersey Estate. This is a stunning antique 19th Century lap desk. A beautiful mid to late 1800's made desk. With the lock reading Bramah Patent on the lock. The exterior made of gorgeous dark Rosewood. With heavy brass ormolu mounted edges& line inlay. With two fantastic fold flat campaign style handles. A large original lock on front and brass inlay name plate. Which has not been engraved. Interior has a centerpiece felt writing surface. which the outer green gilt edge is original but the felt center replaced. The shorter side has a folding surface which opens to a walnut lined compartment. It has two slide locks to hold it in place. The opposite side has a folding surface as well which shows a ... morewalnut compartment which is removable. Then an ebonized wood at the end which holds pens. Inkwell etc. Underneath inside the compartment are three hidden drawers with cloth pulls. Then a side lock on one side which when pulled up releases the exterior hidden drawer. The piece is stunning and large. It does need some work. I don't have a key. There are extra original brass mounts and inlay inside for fixing. Great 19Th Century Formal Mahogany Hepplewhite Slant Lid Lap Desk. Hidden Draws
For sale is a great late 19th century formal mahogany Hepplewhite slant lid lap desk. The lap desk is an overall good condition with some areas of repair as noted in the pictures. This lap desk has several areas of hidden compartments and we've taken pictures of those areas before your consideration. The grain of the mahogany is a very nice with lots of green shelling in a medium brown wooden tone. There are two holding handles on each side of this piece. We are unsure if they are original to this lap desk. The escutcheons looked to be all original with original natural material. The draws all contain original dovetail joinery with what looks like poplar or pine as a secondary wood. There are a few original pieces left in this lap desk including some old glass inkwells a quilt pen and a small holding box. They will be included in the ... moresale but will be packed separately. They are not in the best condition so we are mainly selling it just this lap desk. The left portion of the top lid was at one point glued and repaired back together. Just found at an estate sale here in Boston a really really nice and completely original American Federal 1820s writing desk with side drawer. Nice Period inkwells. Amazing condition for being almost 200 years old. Nice period piece and very hard to find. All of the hinges are strong including the writing compartments. Nice ivory inlay on the skeleton key face and a wonderful lock mechanism. I've been told this is military because of all of the brass reinforcements. I think it still could be a desk for very wealthy individuals. the very long drawer pulls out smoothly and on very solid condition. Great dove tailing and nice chamfered areas on the drawers backside. Both ends have a drawer handle but only one opens it up. The writing surface blotter board looks original. The last owner appears to have been an Elizabeth M Updike. Recently acquired it at an estate sale. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself. The lap desk is probably English made. But that is just a guess, you be the judge. F or your consideration is this walnut antique lap desk in very nice condition. The walnut case has a great luster to it. What makes this piece really unique is the secret slide drawer compartment. It can be opened by opening the case and then taking the brass rod out of the left side of the box that"locks" it in place. The previous owner was an Elizabeth M Updike from Princeton NY. The famous writer. John Updike, had a daughter named Elizabeth, ... morebut correspondence is too old to have been hers. Possibly and earlier family member as John was born in 1932. There are some wedding invitations from the early 1900s in this drawer, a letter that has Princeton 66 on it. Not sure if year, for 1966 or means something else. There is a letter to a Mr. E. M. Updike in the drawer as well from a Turnbull that accompanied a Liberty Bond Medal for WWI efforts in gather funds for the war effort(Princeton NJ Victory Liberty Loan Committee) It probably meant Mrs. but you know the government, they can't even get the sex of a party right in correspondence, eh? Another piece of paper with genealogical information on it talking about Updike's grandfather Samuel Montgomery(1816-1878) married to a Matilda Stockton. Also a mention of a Samuel Updike and his children in this same piece. Also correspondence to Elizabeth Updike in 1927 from Wm Ball& Sons in West Chester. PA. Price lists and pictures of hardware which me thinks was probably to address the missing handle on the one side of the lap desk. Listing is for an antique burr walnut lap desk made by Fisher of the Strand. London, England, c 1860. The Strand was a street that connected the city of London to Trafalgar Square. Fisher was reputed to be one of the highest quality producers of this type of product in the city. There is a mother-of-pearl inlay with the name M. Ellwood center of the top of the lid. The opening for the key is also in an inlayed piece of mother-of-pearl. The desk contains a 1 1/2" square x 1 1/4" tall glass ink well with a metal top marked GERM 0385 DRGM 16180. No key. ENGLISH made burr Walnut writing slope lap desk from the victorian era approx 1860-1880.lots of inlay. It is in fantastic condition and ready to use. It has had its leather writing surface replaced at some point in its life. Looks good. There have been repairs done in bits on the sides of box.nothing terribly bad and not terribly noticeable. felt on bottom has been replaced. The ink well comparment on one side has dividers and due to a bit of wood shrinkage. They will fall but they stay put if you put them in place and set the lap desk somewhere.the hidden comparment is missing the long piece of wood that has the trigger mechanism on it to hide the 3 drawers.it doesnt take away from the charm or beauty of it.one tiny drawer knob is missing.over all, its in great usable, sturdy condition.ready to be used to write your letters.i have 3 and ... moream keeping two.hard to let one go but i dont write enough letters to justify keeping 3. This is a cool item. ... moreA Lovely Antique Lap Desk I believe it is called, circa late 1800's made of wood with Brass bands and has 2 glass Ink bottles with lids and even a Secret Compartment, if you lift up one side of the flap on the inside there is a button that releases the wood flapinside and exposes the two little drawers.also there is some initials of a"J.S" just inside on the brass edge scratched into it, could be old owners initials too though.now for condition, it does have some issues, first is there is a crack in the wood along the whole top(see pic) and also the same on the bottom piece, then there is a small sliver of wood missing from the inside flap that covers the secret compartment but it still works. also the leather on the two inside flaps are deteriating here and there.and on the outside end on the top edge there is a piece of wood missing.also has some nicks and scuffs. The brass Keyhole cover comes off but not a big deal.looks like lock would still work.No Key.I know I make it sound terrible but It really is a cool antique piece of history.Please look at pictures closely and bid accordingly. THE PREVIOUS OWNER SAID IT BELONGED TO HIS GRANDFATHER IN ENGLAND. F or your consideration is this walnut antique lap desk in very nice condition. The walnut case has a great luster to it. What makes this piece really unique is the secret compartment with 2 small drawers. There is a board that runs the length of the case just under the inkwell and pen holder section. The secret compartment board still in place and you Just push down on right side and it springs out. Amazing that it is all there and still works. All still there behind the secret panel and there are white bone knobs on each drawer. My guess is this pieces dates to the early to ... moremid 1800s. You be the judge before buying. This lap desk is beautiful with only small surface scratches. The corners have brass corner pieces. One of the leather pieces needs re gueing but i am leaving that too the new owner. Very nice wood and graining. The inside folding pieces are still all there as well. The lock and latch is there and comes with a key that operates the lock. That does not happen very often with a piece of this one's age anymore. The top of the desk has leather dark material on it which is hard and shows some wear. Both sides of the lap desk open for storage. Has open areas for two ink bottles in the well areas. One on the left and one on the right. Very RARE that both ink wells are with the piece obviously one had red ink and the other black. And a storage area for the pens that has a wood cover. Two other storage areas between the pen area and ink holder, The brass top piece is in place, cannot see any engraving on it and the brass piece around the lock keyhole is also in place. What makes this piece really unique is the great mother of pearl. Metal and wood inlay that it has on it. The case has some dings in it and some veneer chipped off. Some of theinlay is missing, but the desk still looks and shows well. There is also an old metal lock still on the top of the case. Unfortunately no key comes with the desk. I see no maker's mark on the lock mechanism. The two top covers that hinge out are still securely attached to the base of the case by their hinges. The lap desk measures 15-7/8" wide.

Antique New England Lap Table Desk
Up for auction here is a 19th century table lap desk. This piece was purchased from a prominent New England antiques dealer. They said the piece originated in Maine. The piece has square nails and a unique molding around the sides. I think the wood is pine but I'm not sure. There aren't any knots so I'm not sure. It has what I call the"pumpkin pine look. The piece is nice and sturdy. The inside has some shelving. I think the piece is just a nice early piece of Americana. It measures 16" wide; 17" deep. It's 8" tall at the front and 11" at the back. When you open the desk. You can see the desk top panels are covered in a textured black paper with gold gilt trim. The finish of the wood has a wonderful glow to it, along with signs of age and use, such as surface scratches and little nicks, as well as mystery stains. Recently acquired it at an estate sale. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself. The lap desk is probably English made. But that is just a guess, you be the judge. F or your consideration is this beautiful antique lap desk in very nice condition. The wood is most likely walnut and it has a great luster to it. What makes this piece really unique is the secret slide drawer compartment at the bottom of the case. It can be opened by opening the case and then taking the brass rod out of the left side of the box that"locks" it in place. My guess is this piece dates to the mid to late 1800s. You be the judge before buying. This lap desk is beautiful with ... moreonly small surface scratches. The corners are seamed togethers. A slice of veneer below the secret drawer is missing. Very nice wood and graining. The inside folding pieces are still all there as well. The hinges are all there. The top panel of the desk has come unglued and I have left it that way. I took the pics of the case with what I think was the inside of the case, but I think it looks better that way. So leaving top unglued, so that the next owner can decide which side they want showing. The lock and latch and the bone piece around the key hole are there, the case did not come with a key. The top of the inside of the desk has a green felt fabric on it which shows wear. The bone pull is on the secret drawer to pull it out. The desk has two brass handles to carry it by. Both sides of the lap desk open for storage. Has open areas for two ink bottles in the well areas. One on the left and one on the right. The bottom of the lap desk has felt that is coming off. The bottom of the case needs some re-gluing as well. Antique Rosewood Lap Writing Desk, Stenciled Border 1860's
A very attractive wooden lap writing desk in rosewood. Crafted in America in the mid-19th Century. Nice diamond stenciling on top and front bandings. The writing surface is a rose felt that shows pretty normal wear from 150 yrs or so of use. There is also a writing utensil compartment inside. All exterior wood areas are in good order. No cracks or breaks. There is however some old tape residue on the top surface that can be removed with some patience and skill. Its a nice size at: 11.5" long x 8" wide x 4" tall. It weighs approximately 5 lbs.

Overall, it is in nice condition considering the age of the box. There is a wood separation on the bottom(where felt used to be and it is shown in picture) There is no key. Inside there are few compartments and appears as original felt. However due to an age and use, it is seperated as shown in picture as well. Antique Georgian Writing Box Lap Desk Chippendale Style Stand Brass Inlayed
This antique writing desk I believe it is from the very early 1800’s. There are some unique things that I think make the desk. I have the invoice From B. Manheim( The Antique Treasure House of The South) New Orleans. La. Sold to Mrs. Robert K. Drew Milwaukee Journal Co. 7/13/ 1964. Georgian Lap Desk 125.00 Chippendale style legs 50.00. Also there are small notes to show the buyer how to open things. So the buyer bought this 50 years ago. This I think is mahogany and inlayed brass with lock( I do not have the key) There are hidden drawers that many of these had but this one has a built in tee handle key to actually bolt it to a table with built in screws. I tried to picture these) I am not sure if the ink well is original but it had come with it 50 years ago. The owner Mr. Drew was the Vice President of the Milwaukee Journal Co. and my employer ... morelong ago. The desk itself did have a crack in the inner tray and I showed how it was repaired over 50 years ago. Also there are two cracks at the corners on the top. These were also there for over 50 years. The outside has tempered to a light golden color and the top has some stains. I have never tried to recondition it as to me it enhances the antique look of the piece. It measures 16” wide by 12” front to back and is about 6 ½” deep. The Chippendale style legs are floor to bottom of desk 14 ½” So together it stands about 20” tall. Antique 1800s Lap Desk Sturdy Solid Mahogany Campaign Style w/ Lock and Key
This solid wood lap desk was made to hold up to heavy use. Probably for a Military Officer. A Traveling Official, or a Businessman that required a durable portable desk. Closed it measured 15 in. by 10 in. and 6 in. high. When opened it had a 13 ½ in. 5 ¾ in. writing surface and with another flip of the top would become a 13 ½ in. by 13 ½ in. surface. Made with solid Mahogany using hand cut dovetailed joints, it has Brass Handles recessed into the sides. Overall condition is good with wood patches in the back and along the inside edge. At some time in the past the felt was replaced and the leather hinges on the interior compartments are torn with the felt now supporting the writing surface. The top has a tight age crack, the felt has a tiny hole, and the old finish shows marks, scuffs, and fine scratches. It is sturdy ... moreand ready for use. Antique, wood writing lap desk, also called ladies travel desk. maybe 1800's
This is a diamond in the rough. Yes it needs loving care and restoration. We know it was a great. Great grandmothers desk, but not sure if she brought it from England or not. It has a secret drawer. Little compartments, and a little cover for small treasures. inkwell glass bottle(1) Some keys, some waxed string for whatever we don't know. It has brass corner plates, and a plate on the top which we believe are the initials. H A M. there is what appears to be one pen which you would put a tip in, and a pencil. THERE IS ALSO some original sealing wax. they kind you melt and stamp. The felt is in bad shape, and the felt that connected the little table hinge is worn off. It weighs 14.9 pounds. measures in the box form 10 X 17 3/4 X 7 1/4" tall. and opened up it is 21" long, and slants for easy writing. It needs someone who can appreciate ... morehow old it is. A treasure from long ago. I am not asking lots of money because it does need some redoing. I took pictures of all angles so you can see it is missing a bit of wood on one corner. The lock it gone. This is a gorgeous antique. Circa 1840 rosewood lap desk. Includes the key. 2 silver ink bottles, porcupine quill. There is brass inlay across the top and sides. Approx. Measurements: 13 7/8" x 9 1/4" x 4 5/8" There are six compartments on the inside: 2 for the silver ink bottles. 1 to hold items such as stamps. 1 for the porcupine quill. Which also has a lid. 1 which opens up to hold the stationary. 1 which opens up to hold the envelopes. There is a small crack across the top of the box but still in very good condition for its age. Nice ANTIQUE 1827 AMERICAN TRAVELING LAP DESK Secret Compartment PROVENANCE NOTE
I will be listing a variety of nice estate-fresh Antique and Vintage Items this week. Here is a Great ANTIQUE MAHOGANY AND POPLAR WOOD TRAVELING LAP DESK with EARLY PROVENANCE NOTE FOUND HIDDEN INSIDE A SECRET COMPARTMENT INSIDE DESK which reads"Made by Thomas J. Luther. June 26. 1827 in the 70 year of his age. Witness John G. Hopkins" There is also another 19thC name written on the frame of the interior writing surface which looks like"Miss Lizzie Carlile" see photo) I would guess this to be an American Lap Desk since the secondary wood is made of a poplar wood. Desk box is 22"W x 11"D x 8-1/8"H. I was not able to identify who the names on the note and box are in my quick research. Since the note says Thomas Luther was 70 years old in 1827. Then he would have been born in 1757(or maybe 1756? I find it unusual ... morethat this maker's information was witnessed by another gentleman- I've never seen that before. Beautifully made early lap desk. Early square nail and dovetail construction. Lovely old patina to exterior mahogany surface. The desk has a working key for the exterior lock(you need to turn key to the left a bit hard to lock the desk. But will turn fine and lock and unlock the desk once you get past the sticking point) The desk also has a locking bottom drawer- you pull up the metal rod on inside of box to release the drawer. The desk has a secret triangular-shaped compartment underneath the center well- first you push down the outside end of the pen tray to lift out the tray, and then you lift out the partition wall to access the compartment. The Early-19thC provenance note was found rolled up inside this compartment. The brass hinges look like later replacements but function very well. Some chipping to edges of wood around the hinges. Also a chip off of wood on the rear side right corner of box. An aquaintance of mine nicely replaced the leather hinges behind the green felt on the interior of desk. It features 2 dovetailed drawers and lock with antique skeleton key(not original from the piece but works) It has the original red paint in fair condition with some scratches normal for a 100 year old piece. It came from the Virginia's country side.
