Antique Pair Meissen German Porcelain Vase Urn Handpainted Flowers Dresden
This is a lovely pair of Meissen porcelain handled vases. They are white with handpainted colorful bouquets on either side. There was gold gilt as well however most of it is worn away. One vase has no chips or repairs however the other has one handle broken and one side of the bottom base has been repainted on the flat part. Only one side. Both are first quality with no scratch marks and measure 8 1/4 inches high by 5 1/4 inches wide. Beautiful for the collector! DESCRIPTION: Very detailed and beautifully moulded and handpainted vase with a two-tailed mermaid and merman at the base. Above the mermaid is a reserve depicting a courting scene beautifully handpainted in the Wattau manner. The back reserve above the merman is a bouquet of handpainted flowers. The vase is flanked by two dolphins. The rocaille base is very ornate with flowers and scrolls. The high glaze is beautiful and so are the gilded details throughout the entire vase. This very rare vase depicts two very unusual forms. A mermaid and, even rarer, a merman. This is the first I've seen in more than thirty years of collecting fine porcelain. I bought this large jardiniere with base at an estate auction. There is a sticker on the underfoot that bears the Dresden mark as well as Karl Richard Klemm's mark. It seems that the urn is attached to the base by glue. The gilded handles on the pot feature feature putti amid grapevines and clusters. Supported by three classical female beauties. Draped in gilded robes. The females are amid applied polychrome flowers. The gilded handed do have some dullness due to handling. The reticulated rocaille base has floral reserves. This jardiniere weighs over 25 lbs. Striesen. Germany is where Karl Klemm's factory was founded in 1869. Very decorative European porcelain basket or a vase. The main color is deep-deep cobalt blue with bright decorations. The basket and the decor are in perfect shape- I haven't noticed any rubbed off decor which could be expected for the type of item. No chips. Cracks or crazing. There is a minor production problem- one spot on the base is missing the glaze- almost invisible when the basket is standing right up. The excess of the glaze has been shaved off to achieve perfect footing of the basket. There are no markings I can detect. But this is not a new item. It is 8 and 1/2' H x 7 and 1/2' W(max) and 4' deep. It weights 610 g. I would expect $12-$30 shipping to Canada and the US.
