It is made of silk. Brocade and velvet squares with heavy embroidery and appliques including Kate Greenway figures, swan, crosses, flowers, dogs and many others wonderful figures. It is a friendship quilt made by a circle of friends who have initialled and signed many of their quilt squares. Some of the signatures are dated 1898. Each quilt square is made of tiny shapes ... moreof materials sewn together into a bigger square. The quilt measures 60" x 60" It is a beautifully made quilt rich in colors and shapes. It is over a 100 years old and is not in good condition but quite worn in places. Silk fabric does not age well and some of the silk squares show fabric loss and splits. There are some stains on some of the squares. There are about 17 squares that show silk splitting or damage. The edge stitching is very worn in places and gone in others.The back of the quilt is is worn through in several places showing the batting. I have tried to photograph these areas of wear. A couple of the appliques are gone showing an outline of the figures on the material. I was told by a quilter that a lot of the damage could be repaired or replaced or that many of the squares could be used in another quilt. Please be sure to enlarge the images to see the details before bidding. Regardless of its age wear, this is a fabulous Victorian quilt rich in design and history that I believe still displays well and would be well worth the restoration. AMAZING Vintage 1895 Victorian Crazy Antique Quilt ~VERMONT Family History! This MUSEUM QUALITY Victorian silk crazy quilt is all hand stitched. With wonderful hand embroidered embellishments. Hand cross stitched in the border is a substantial amount of family history: Lydia A. Shamberlin, born in Barnard, September, year 1820. Married James Gifford, December, year 1839. James Gifford died Oct. 13, 1868 Age 56 at Windsor, VT. Lydia A. Gifford married Benjamen F. Hemenway, September 14, 1869. Died at Ascutna(sp. Vil. VT, age 75 years. Perhaps the quilt was made by a family member for Lydia's funeral? In the background are wonderful pictorial accents, such as a house, oil lamp, dog, tiger, horse, swan, hunter, flowers, fans, and other items. It measures 52" X 66" and is in very good(especially for early silks) Unwashed condition, ... morewith very minor splits in 5-6 places and wear at places at the binding edge. There is sparse straight line quilting. Mostly in the border, at 6-7 stitches to the inch. The back is a pale pink cotton. The hand stitched binding is black silk, and the batting is thin. RARELY do you find this much history actually STITCHED INTO A QUILT- a TRUE MUSEUM QUALITY COLLECTOR'S QUILT!

Velvet, damask, embroidered, and textured fabrics in an array of colors and patterns. Hand quilting and tiny turkey stitched paths. It has multicolored ties on a light sage green silk like backing. Hand bound and pieced. It measures a large 83" x 85" This quilt is in good condition. There is normal shredding in the silks(approx 18 pieces) Fading on the backing, and a couple light water spots as shown in photo's. A graphic. Wonderful quilt! BM. 5.6lb. I don't know much about this or what pertinent info you would like to know so please view photos and ask questions. I am sorry but I will have to add photos shortly as my camera is not wanting to download.This measures 61 x 63 with a 5 inch crocheted lace around sides for a total of 66 x 68. The backing is a light brown cotton with a few tiny slits and a larger tear.See photo. There is a deep red velvet border around sides with each corner having 3d flowers and then the lace. The quilt is comprised of silks, satins, velvets,and oriental type fabrics. Some of the fabric has age related wear, mostly the silk type with a shredding.There are a few tears in the lace along the edge, I would say that there are less then 10 with varying degrees and that is really not bad because there are many many pieces. Original 1886 handsewn and embroidered Antique Victorian Silk CRAZY QUILT by Hester Ann Brown(born in 1864) Hester's sister. Margaret Brown was a missionary in Japan and brought the silk home from Japan in 1886 and Hester made a quilt from the silk. This creative colorful quilt is about 125 years old and in Good Condition. The fabric has seven small areas of breakdown. The areas with the most damaged are shown in the photos. The back of the quilt is vivid orange silk. The quilt measures 62" x 75" Please note: Hester made incredible quilts most of her life. Although this quilt is handsewn but she added a colorful machine sewn trim to this quilt many years later. The quilt belongs to Hester's daughter. Alice(91) who is selling this treasure to pay medical bills.

For your consideration is this antique crazy quilt. Great for your collection. I am guessing this is older than the 30's because of the the silk deterioration in over 15 of the blocks. The binding is a heavy upholstery or drapery fabric and has faded from blue to green.Biding job is sloppy and does not match the quality of stitching on the quilt. FOLK PRIMITIVE ANTIQUE VICTORIAN CRAZY QUILT TOP FRAGMENT EMBROIDERY FRENCH KNOT
An antique Victorian era crazy quilt top fragment(could have been a lap blanket) With very fine fabric pieces including moire satin, silk and velvet in vivid colors, with three embroidered flowers. Various stitching techniques were used in many thread colors, and one piece is trimmed in french knots. The fragment is in good condition with wear commensurate with age, including some areas of fading, fraying, some loose and torn stitching, and small stains and discolorations. This was mounted to paperboard backing with double sided tape, and when removed, left residual adhesive and large shreds of paper still attached to the back edges. I have not removed the paper so as not to compromise the fabric underneath, which is frail. Please review the images above and below to thoroughly assess condition. Lot Thin Victorian Silk Velvet Pieces Cloche Crazy Quilt Dolls This is that wonderful low pile thin antique silk velvet from Victorian times. Perfect for crazy quilts and other projects. There are a total of ten pieces in the lot, the first being the cloche hat someone had started but not finished. It's made up of four velvet pieces, in a soft taupe. If you are interested in it as a hat, it appears to be a medium size because it fits me. If you want the velvet, you'd have to dismantle it, of course. There are many initials. Moon and stars, a cross with a floral vine weaving around it, an angel, the words"Rest here thy weary head" lots of flowers, a heart with"Love" and a bouquet of flowers inside it, vases with flowers, melons, pea pods, a rooster, two hearts ... moreas one. There's a variety of embroidery stitches used to stitch patches together. Fabrics are cotton, silk, wool, and more. There is no batting. Just backing and binding. This is entirely hand stitched. Size is 76" x 76"+/ There is wear commensurate with age. Which you can see in the pictures. I spread this out to search for damage and found less than a dozen blocks that are missing or frayed, so to me that seems pretty good for a quilt of this age. Vintage Victorian VERY OLD Crazy Quilt 75" x 78" UNFINISHED AS IS
Victorian wool crazy quilt is pieced. But not finished. There is no batting or inner fabric other than the original pieced backing on each square. This is very old. It has some of the original basting stitches. Most of the red cross strips are badly damaged by moths and need to either be repaired, but probably need to be replaced. I have tried to photo these to show how bad the damage is. Some of the other pieces have moth damage also. The backing looks like flannel and other assorted cottons. Embroidery is mostly on the seams. There are some stains. I have lightly cleaned with a home dry cleaning product, mostly to get the dust out of it. No attempt at proper cleaning or any repairs. Sweet Shabby Antique 1800s Victorian Era Hand Sewn Crazy Quilt Embroidered Too Who-hoo- went to my first auction of the summer- it was a farm estate auction literally right down the street from me. The former owners had lived there since he had gotten out of the military after enlisting during WWII. And her family had been on the property for generations before that. It’s all farm stuff- household, barn, outbuildings, property- many items from the 1800s and up. Lot of old iron, barn digs, primitives and pretties- I’m so excited to show them to you! Enjoy! I love this one. I know. It's shabby, but it is also so sweet and still will display very well if you don't my the rustic primitive wear. It has a story to tell, too. What I have is an 1800s hand made quilt- it's a very light quilt- that is lined simply on the back with a floral ... morefabric(all around except one side, which has not floral fabric- it's just white fabric for about 6" all the way down, and I don't think there is any padding or quilting material inside. Maybe made as a decorative(or at least summer) piece- as it only weighs 1 1/2 lbs. It measures 64" by 48" and has a 7" border all around of diamonds of multiple fabrics- many velvet, but others too. Inside the border, there are larger pieces that have hand embroidered designs. There's a boy swinging a baseball bat, a boy or man riding a high wheeled bicycle, a woman sweeping, a decorative jar, a bouquet of leaves or flowers that have what appear to be rhinestones sewn in for decoration, a bouquet of daisies, a long patch of oak leaves and acorns, a woman in a long dress and large hat holding flowers up to the man in tails in the adjacent piece of material, a fancy owl sitting on what looks to be the moon, another woman in a long dress with something round in her hand, more baseball embroidery, I'm not getting them all, just some- it's like an old piece of memory folk art- it will keep you looking for a long time! The quilt is very old and made from rich velvet and silk fabrics. There are little embroidered rosettes and turkey trot stitching. The velvet pieces are the largest and in good condition. The silk pieces have some damage; 6-7 pieces have holes and shredding from age. It measures 58" x 74" and the backing is a blueish-purple color cotton fabric. The backing has no holes. Stains or wear, but is slightly faded. The quilt is quite heavy and the fabrics seem sturdy, except for the silk pieces. It has a light musty odor from decades in storage, but is fairly clean. It is a'Crazy' pattern as odd-shaped pieces of silk have neen used. I think it is English. It looks as if it has been cut from a larger quilt, perhaps the central panel. A few of the patches need replacing as they have completely deteriorated, a few others show wear or damage, but overall the effect is very pleasing, it is large enough to make into an occasional tableclth or perhaps a couple of cushion/pillow fronts. ONE-IN-A-THOUSAND! Here is a 40” X 65” Victorian Crazy quilt’ that was created in 1885. From a variety of silks; silk velvet's. Brocades, taffeta's and ribbons, and created in an unusual size it is made up of eight blocks measuring approximately 15 x 17 inches each and assembled in a two by four block array. Both machine embroidered silks and hand embroidery in silk twists is exhibited in this quilt with executed patterns. A few fanciful elements of hand embroidery and appliqué are also executed in some of the interiors of the silks so there is always something new to explore when you study this quilt. All fabrics are in pristine condition and the colors remain rich and vibrant. There is something new where ever you look! You will also notice– there is NO FADING! Of special note are the intricate border and binding elements used ... morein the creation of this quilt. A four-inch wide burgundy silk velvet border with gold silk velvet corner blocks surrounds the inner design. The border's inside seam is a couched piping element of blue silk twist over bronze metallic thread. A brown silk taffeta rushing with black velvet edging frames the outside edge of the burgundy border. Lovely design details that remain in excellent condition. The backing is a fine solid bronze-gold wool challis with reverse ties in both black and green wool. This auction is for a spectacular antique Victorian crazy quilt that was made in the nineteenth century. Sometime in the mid-to-late 1800's. The quilt features skillful and extensive embroidery and clever piecing with an ennate sense of style. Some of the silk pieces look like they've been painted. This piece is 62-1/2" long by 46+" wide. The quilt is backed with a sturdy medium blue fabric. There are two hand-written notes attached to the back. The bottom one states: My Grandmother's, Mrs. Chas. P. Cleaveland. The second note states: Belonged to Grandmother Cleaveland, great-grandmother of Jim and Bill, Might be of interest to a Art Museum or Historical Society, 1/24/66. This comes fresh from an estate in Iowa. Where I have acquired many antique quilts I will be listing this week. This quilt is truly gorgeous- a colorful and richly vibrant selection of quilt pieces in every size and shape. Some pieces also have been embroidered; there are a couple of pictures showing them. Some of the velvet pieces are worn- perhaps already worn when they were used, ... moreas 98% of the rest of the pieces are thick and soft as new. The pieces have been hand sewn together, then each has been outlined by a zig-zag stitch. The quilt is made with thick batting. This quilt has been very well cared for, and I could find no stains. Additionally, there are no rips, tears or holes, no frays and no wear spots(other than the velvets noted above) All of the colors are still crisp and vibrant. The backing is yellow-gold cotton that has been hand tied in rows to the front with brown yarn. The quilt pieces are turned under at the edges to create a hem on all four sides of the backing. This is a substantial quilt, in museum-quality condition! This quilt was lovingly made with great care and has survived in near mint condition. It measures 73 inches by 82 inches. This unexpected survivor has a visual WOW factor not often found in its genre. Measuring 80” x 56” it is carefully composed of silk scraps with black silk velvet to develop an eye-dazzling trompe l’oiel effect of inny-outy cubes. It comes from an African American home in Cassopolis Michigan. But none of the family is sure who made it. We are pleased to offer this wonderful crazy quilt that offers a poignant glimpse into the maker’s family history. In one corner of the quilt the maker has signed her quilt with a black strip of grosgrain ribbon that she has embroidered with her name. Alice, in cursive, with half of the A in cream colour and the rest in red. She places an embroidered French dot in red after her name and surrounds the whole with flowers and vines. This richly detailed quilt has hand painted squares and ribbons. One black silk square depicts an arrangement of white flowers and buds on brown stems. Embellished ... morewith green leaves. Another depicts a cherry tree dotted with pink buds and green leaves and a stylized corner sun. There is a cream silk panel painted with blue forget-me-nots. So appropriate in a quilt whose overall design intent seems to beg just that. Another tan velvet section shows two girls in hats at the shore under an umbrella. One girl holds a blue shovel in her hand. A cream silk panel has the initials A. D. in pretty calligraphy decorated with blue forget-me-nots. Another panel shows a little boy from the back in blue overalls that crisscross on his back. He sports a hat. Other areas are embroidered. The embroidery connects various sections with vines. Leaves and flowers. One black square has hand embroidered rows of crosses. Perhaps a reference to the Civil War that is also remembered in a reunion ribbon. When studying the quilt sweet little bouquets of flowers pop up here and there. A golden piece has the initials WeL embroidered in blue. Victorian silk"Crazy Quilt" from the 1880's has an old silk playbill sewn into the quilt along with many other interesting embroidery of animals. Objects and names of individuals. Size is 68" x 84" I bought this in Southampton. New York. This is museum quality meaning it should be framed. Much of the patchwork is sturdy. While there are some patches that are very delicate and should be preserved. In example- the silk playbill invitation that is sewn in has lost some of it's cross thread(see pics) Also, there is an edge that suffered a slight burn. This piece is just over 5 foot by 5 foot-take note-there is a five foot 3 inch daughter hiding behind this. This piece is cool-there are initials. A piece of advertising, some painted and some embroidered flowers. There is a ribbon that says" Windsor Castle. Portland Maine, Knights of the Golden Eagle, Reception of the First Battalion, Massachusetts, September 2, 1889. There is some age and damage I am listing too much stuff to be really specific. The single square is also perfect for a frame. The needlework includes different silk feather stitches and embroidered thistle and butterfly. Fabric used looks like velvet and silk. This piece has been framed since the 1960’s and was safe behind glass since then. The glass was broken so now it is being sold. There is some discoloration near the thistle motif and one of the brown silk ribbons have a split. There is loose baste stitches scattered from when it was framed. These can easily be removed. Up for bids is this absolutely amazing Antique 19th Century Victorian Crazy Quite. Measurements: 76 1/2" x 65 Hand sewn and hand painting. This amazing silk 19th Century Victorian has the most fantastic hand embroidered flower bouquets which include pansies. Daisies, and several other species of flowers. There is a hand embroidered horses head, a woman with a rake, a dog holding a basket in his mouth, a basket with a cat or kitten inside a basket, a spool of thread, buttons, thimble and scissors, a horse shoe and a boy with some type of farming implement. There is also hand painted floral bouquets, as well as interesting and intricate fabrics used with different textures, material and designs. Three patches with embroidered peacocks. Four embroidered red roses on fabric. The border is like a stained glass window in different shades of ... moretan. Deep burgundy, claret, red, teal blue cognac, dark brown and black VELVET. All heavily stitched beautifully. Beautiful fabrics are used in this crazy quilt. There is a silk in green and gold with an iridescent sheen to it. Beautiful shades of dark blue velvets. Crimson, burgundy, dark brown, black and others that add such a richness to this crazy quilt. Gorgeous magenta burgundy, brown and more silk and satin. Others have a textured repeated design in the fabric. The back is different fabrics. Most with a sheen to them, satin, silk in tan, bronze, green and a light sage. Condition is very good. There are some patches where the threads have been worn and loose. There is an 8" x 8 1/2" tan satin patch of an embroidered dog holding a basket in his mouth and the black threads are all tattered and loose. Stunning 1800s Victorian silk crazy quilt Red silk border/back hand embroidered! Authentic hand-made quilt found in attic of Boise. Idaho, home. In good condition, appears to have had little use. Colors are very vivid. Chinese and other silks throughout. Appliques and embroidery in various places. Also sequins stitched on at least one triangle. Silk over-stitching throughout resembles fences, crosses, hands, chicken feet, floral vines, and more. I don't see any areas that have become unstitched. A few silk squares have deteriorated and the silk has pulled apart into tears. No bad odors. Border and back is a scarlet red color. Measures 76" wide by 84" long.
