This textile is an antique French Provencal quilt ~ this textile is two sided the red back side is a wonderful pairing of two fabrics manufactured later than the front ~ The neutral browns side of this textile are wonderfully early dating from c1800-1820~ most likely printed at the Jouy factory ~ this textile has a Fenetre composition in which one fabric is bordered by another. This is the most complicated piecework tradition to Provencal quilts. The autumnal tones on the front side of this quilt are simply stunning ~ The central square was printed using hand carved wooden blocks and is one piece of fabric, rather than being pieced. This side is bordered using a wonderful block printed over-dyed cotton. The central square may have been produced as a scarf and later used to create this amazing textile. The border of the central square is an extraordinary printed piece with wonderful vermicular design on the sides. These fabrics are called called Ramoneur and were woodblock printed. These fabrics can not be exposed to water without risk of extreme damage to the fabrics as the mordants that were used to print these textiles were corrosive with time ~ so this textile is not suitable for water washing ~ The opposite side I would date to c1850-1860. Smallest square is about 7.5 x 7.5 inches, largest is over 9 x 9 inches. There are fourteen squares and a stray center piece. All are hand pieced and hand stitched. Some of the indigo fabrics look like Stifel but there are no"boots" to be seen on the reverse. Most fabrics are early twentieth or late nineteenth century. Lushly quilted Indigo Blue & White FEATHERED STAR CUTTER antique quilt 8-9spi
Miss the old version of this page? everything on one long page. vfsce. Hat a beautifully made quilt this Feathered Star was. Alas. Its red print must have had a black or brown element that neatly disintegrated away over time, leaving heavily weakened fabric and exposing the batting so that it pilled and clumped where unprotected. Some 18 beautifully quilted open white blocks remain and there's still a strangely strong graphic appeal to the intact quilt as-is. so maybe you have the perfect next stage for its checkered life? I would imagine this dates to the last quarter of the 1800's. Size The quilt measures about 72 x 74 inches. The blocks are about 12 inches square and the tiny half-square triangles are only 3/4-inch square. Quilting The hand-quilting is lovely. With 8-9 little stitches to the inch. Counting on the top side of the ... morequilt only. Construction The blocks are tightly hand-pieced and I think the long seams are by hand as well. Backing. Binding& Batting The white backing is clean and bright but has about 8 blocks where damage on the front shows through as clusters of small through-holes on the reverse. The sweet little hand-applied indigo binding along two sides gives way to a machine-applied black gingham along the other two. But both bindings are heavily worn and frayed along the edges. Please note that some of the binding appears missing in the overall picture. But that's just my sloppy editing. It's there all the way around. The batting is super thin and even. Though I do find some flat spots and of course there are losses in the centers of the blocks where fabric has worn away. Condition The quilt's condition is strong and clean. But clearly very compromised thanks to that red wearing away and the resulting damage to batting. Although there's heavy wear and through-holes in the star blocks, I find very little damage to the beautifully quilted open white blocks. I only detect minor surface wear, snagging etc. on four of them. I note some minor staining which is pictured.

Antique/Vintage CHURN DASH Quilt TOP made in New England c.1875. This wonderful early quilt top is 76 inches long by 70 inches wide. There are a total of 42 Churn Dash blocks that are each 8 inches square. The cotton fabrics are scrumtious INDIGO BLUES. MADDER BROWNS, MOURNING prints, assorted SHIRTINGS, etc. that have never been washed and are crisp and vibrant. The Mourning print sashing between blocks is 2.5" wide. The two side borders are 4.5 inches wide by 76" and they are of a little darker Mourning print. Every stitch is done precisely by Hand with all points sharp. Excellent never used condition with no spots or stains. Pix#11 shows a small eraser size hole near an edge. The last pix shows a close-up of the back. I bought several of her quilts& will be listing all of them this week. Many of her quilts were exhibited in the Delaware(Ohio) Art Museum in 1974. This quilt has never been laundered& certainly does not need to be now. It's crisp& clean ~ you can still see the pencil trace lines. You might recognize this quilt pattern as"Robbing Peter to Pay Paul" but it is actually called"Dolly Madison's Work Box" the difference being that the blocks alternate in color. It only makes sense that Mrs. Evans made this quilt. Dolly Madison was born in Philadelphia, Pa. into the Quaker faith. The quilt measures 82" x 67" is in extremely good condition, museum quality, with no rips, tears or holes, no fraying. You will only find one pin point-sized stain& one other small very light one(pictures 13& 14) The quilting is amazing with 11 spi. The borders are quilted in a long rainbow design and a very unique diamond design. But this one has to be the most unusual one. This antique hand sewn top is from Indiana. Set in a very rare and hard to find sampler setting. Most unusual large central feather star surrounded by a different block patterns. Top is completely hand sewn with tiny stitches as shown. Extremely neat and tiny stitches. Central Red fabric framing the feather star is deep rich turkey red as shown in close up. The wonderful early fabrics can be dated out of Eileen Jahnke Trestain's book on antique fabrics. Indigo blues. ... moreEarly green, turkey red, shirting cottons, early weaves. A lot of the setting cotton is an oatmeal pin dot print I haven't seen before. All sewn by hand very carefully. Blocks are very unusual as they are 16 inch blocks. So seamstress would of had to draft to this size. Central star is 26 1/2 x 27. 12 ~16 inch blocks. Quilt top is is 71 x 73 inches. Condition is crisp. Unused, unwashed. Very nice with typical light age freckling and light toning along edges. Colors are very strong and bright. Slight fade to the old over dye green. There is 1/2" single rod work throughout the quilting. Hand bound and pieced. Each piece measures 1" x 1" Filled with a thin cotton batting. Hi And Welcome to my Auction~~ Today I have here a Really Rare Stunning Visual Indigo Blue& Double Irish Chain Postage Stamp Quilt With a Double Postage Stamps On Point Stunning Border ~ This is an all Cotton Quilt The Stitching is so Tiny I can Not even see it with my maginifying Glass Teeny Tiny Stitching at approx ~ 18 to 20 stitches per Inch but the Stitching is what I call a Micro Tiny because it is the the tiniest stitching I have Ever seen AMAZING so it may be even be 22 Stitches per inch~ This Also Has Initials of J. O. S. In at least 4 Areas on the backside the quilter surely Must have wanted to make sure Someone Knew Who Made this Quilt ~it Is a Masterpiece for Sure ~~ ~This Quilt has One Indigo Blue Ditsy Print Pattern used for the Entire Quilt Stunning ~ ~The Postage Stamps are a Tiny little 1 inch Stamps~~This Quilt dates ... moreapprox ~1860 to 1890's ~~It is Rare& Stunning to find A Indigo Blue& White Double Irish Postage Stamp Quilt ~With approx 18 it maybe even be 22 Micro Tiny Stitches per Inch Top side only ~Amazing!~ ~I did give this Quilt a Gentle Quilt Bath and it was laid to dry in our Nice Farm Fresh Country Air~~So it Fresh and Clean ~~ This Quilt is In Excellent Condition For Its Age It has Some Edge Wear with some fabric popping along the Edge front and back on the what I call the chin area where they would have pulled on it but not to bad Really ~~The Binding Is Still in tack but is Fraying No Excessive over all wear to the fabric ~ ~This Quilt Is a ULTRA Thin Thin Light Weight Quilt ~ There is batting but she must have layered it very very Thinly hence the 20 stitches or more to the Inch ~There maybe a few small spots here or there maybe some slight yellowing I don't see any But this Quilt was Dirty ~This quilt Did take 5 days to soak ~It was Not cleaned I think for about 100 years ~But It is now Fresh Clean And Stunning and Ready for A new Quilt Keeper to Enjoy ~ ~ This Quilt is an all Cotton Fabric Quilt the batting is Super Ultra Thin ~ The Stitching is so micro I think

Primitive Pillow 7 by 7 Red White Blue Star Antique Cutter Quilt Indigo
A fantastic primitive pillow made from a beautiful antique quilt square. The old fabrics are beautiful. The horseshoe print on the red fabric is really fun. The hand stitches on this quilt are amazing. I think you can see that in the photos. However. Too many worn spots mean the quilt can't be used-the fabric on the plain squares setting these blocks was completely shattered. So I've made pillows to be used as decorations-on your bed or chair, or in a basket. The pillow is about 7" by 7" The corners are slightly boxed, to give the pillow a nice shape. The pillows are stuffed with new bamboo fiberfill. The pillow has a complementary antique/vintage button sewn in the middle. The pillow is backed with a piece from an antique reclaimed cotton homespun towel-another piece of fabric history that needs to be saved and admired. ... moreBoth the front and back have an authentic patina of age.
