Once again I managed to truffle out some delightful items for you to browse through. And I will be listing these as I retrieve them from their boxes. South West France was rather cold and rainy this May– not what I had been expecting at all! Nevertheless, the wonderful brocantes and antique markets proved to be a fabulous hunting ground. And my contacts had stored away boxes of brilliant antique textiles and ephemera for me to sort through. Do keep a look out over the next weeks as I sort through the treasures and list them for you! A stunning antique hand stitched quilt from SW France- such beautiful pink and red cabbage roses on a subtle teal coloured ... morebackground. The reverse is a darker floral fabric- also stunning. And a really unusual combination. The quilt is in pristine condition. All the edges are hand stitched too, and there are absolutely no signs of wear. It must have bee stored away for many years without being used. It smells sweet, and there are no marks or stains. The edges are rounded- the French quilts are smaller than Durham quilts, and this would make a lovely throw at the end of a bed(shown on a king size four poster) It measures 172cm x 152cm. What is offered here. Is simply an antique french boutis quilt. The pattern is on both sides, and appears as it is shown. The colors are marvelous. From golds to cream, rose to bordeaux wine. Gorgeous purple colors greens. Its really hard to take wonderful pictures of such a large object. I will be pleased to take more for you as 5 are all I have taken. Grand quilt fits over my queen bed quite nice. No holes or repairs that I notice. I have had it for many years mostly packed away which is a shame for such a great beauty. Quite heavy, so I do apologize for shipping costs. All my items are from a pet and smoke free home. Please ask any questions you desire, I will be happy to answer! A very lovely antique French quilt with beautiful floral designs on both sides. One side has wonderful pink faded roses& the other has a typically French Provencal type print. This is a plump quilt. Filled with fluffy wool& hand-quilted in a simple diamond pattern. It's larger than you normally see with this type of quilt too& must be lovely& warm. It measures 188cm x 172cm(74" x 67 1/2" would be used just on top of the bed, like an eiderdown, rather than hanging down to the floor. The fabrics are beautiful cotton rose prints. Each side has a different fabric that contrast superbly with the other. The colours are soft and subtle warm natural colours. Dusty rose, browns and greens on a pale cream background. In great condition for its age. The edges are fractured and there is a small hole on one corner, plus odd tiny holes as shown in the photographs. It could be repaired and it has no patches, so the overall look is fabulous. There are 9 rows of quilting around the outside edge. Which again, contrast beautifully with the inner diamond pattern. The boutis is in an unwashed condition with surface dust but no major stains or marks. It measures ... more72" by 68" and weighs 4.050kgs. Welcome to ~FRENCH VINTAGE LINENS AND ANTIQUES~ Where You Will Find Beautiful and Unusual Vintage Linens& Apparel and Antiques from France ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~Remarkable Antique French All-White Boutis~ French Quilt with All-Over Stitching and Scallops This little'boutis' is simply put.rare and exceptional for its all-over stitching. And because it is white-on-white. It is made of 2 layers good. Strong white cotton fabric with a'batting' probably cotton) in between the two layers. This was likely a marriage quilt. Or perhaps it may have been made for a baby. There is a small center medallion set on a ground of diamond or lozenge-shaped stitching and then comes a deep border all around with swirling and looping swags. All finished with little scallops on all four sides. Virtually all the original stitching ... moreis in place with only a couple of small areas where a few stitches are missing. This quilt isn't huge in size. But it is grand for the absolutely wonderful stitching that covers it. The maker was clearly accomplished as the work is even and precise with lots of definition. The measurements for this French boutis are 75 inches by 78 inches. Was it perhaps made for a child? Or was it meant to go at the foot of a bride's bed? And wouldn't it now be superbe as a table cover? I bought this quilt from one of my favorite sources. This is a French lady who has a real passion for old French linens and things of this sort. She told me that this quilt was dusty and dirty when she acquired it in Provence. But with patience she soaked it and carefully washed in many times and dried it in the Provencal sun until it is now bright white. It is in near-perfect condition save for the minor missing stitches.so it was likely just stored for years in a dusty attic. My source dated it to around 1890 to about 1920 and told me that all-white boutis of this type were commonly made in the south of France for marriages and births. All in all. ANTIQUE DOUBLE SIDED FRENCH BOUTIS QUILT.C1800s WONDERFUL EARLY FABRIC
I have for auction this amazing rare to find genuine antique French boutis quilt. It will date to the C1800s and has been totally hand made as a double sided quilt, with a pretty cretonne like fabric to one side with flowers, mainly roses in lemon and gold tones, salmon pink to red and a pale orange into a deep red/brown on a beige background, the other side of the quilt, I think my favourate, is a linen like fabric, beige background with the most beautiful possibly screen printed botanical design with dragonflies, butterflies and humming birds in a pale raspberry into a deep claret, what stunning fabric this is! Now the sad part, this early boutis was found packed away in an attic here in the South of France, there is some staining, some holes, not too many! some of the old woolen batting has moved about within the quilt leaving a lump in ... morethe centre, this I feel could be easily manipulated back into place, the condition is not wonderful but this is a very special and rare boutis and needs someone to love it and spend some time bringing it back to it's original magnificent state, this is not a boutis for someone looking for perfection but for someone that truely loves and understands these rare early textiles, the purist! it measures approx 87.5"x83.5" or 2m22x2m12. A delightful quilt piece from a French boutis. And dating to about 1820. The design is typical of the period, and is in lovely shades of red, aqua and pale aubergine on a cream ground. It is backed with a pretty small print in red and aubergine. The condition is very good. There are one or two very small faults on the reverse. And one tiny mark. Otherwise the"right" side seems excellent. Clean and fresh. It has batting between the two fabrics. This would make a lovely cushion backed with antique linen. Measurements: 22" x 24"

This is smaller than most British quilts from the same period- it measures 139cm x 157cm- perfect as a summer throw ... moreor to display on a bedroom chair. It is freshly laundered and snowy white. There are a few tiny, pale marks- I think these are from the cotton seeds inside the quilt, but they are not intrusive. There is a little clumping of the cotton batting in the small areas that are not so densely stitched. This is a light, summer weight quilt- perfect for these hot days. There is no damage, and no wear to the edges- all the edges are also hand stitched. Very hard to find these quilts in good condition now, so if you love antique Provencal quilts, don't let this one go! More photographs below. PLEASE READ. BEAUTIFUL ANTIQUE FRENCH HAND STITCHED BOUTIS QUILT late 1800s SHABBY FLORALS Please scroll down for more pictures. This is a beautiful antique French boutis quilt that dates from the late 1800s. A really beautiful old boudoir treasure embellished with romantic shabby florals. This large quilt is completely hand stitched and hand quilted and is filled with traditional woollen batting making it warm and tactile. The top carries a delicieux printed cotton that has a soft old white/warm cream background with the design in pinks. Greens, eau de nil, cranberry and deep mauve- all very easy on the eye. The design carries country flower bouquets and smaller flower sprigs and boughs. The flowers are interspersed with branches. Vines and leaves. In between the flowers are small pale vignettes of windmills with a ladder and their slatted sails. The ... morereverse side is turkey red cotton. The quilting is worked within outer rectangular borders with the inner stitching in large diamonds. The top textile is in wonderful condition with just a little wear around the edges commensurate with age and use- it certainly does not detract. There are some marks but it has not yet been laundered- a quick cleaning will soon have it freshened up. The reverse is a little more timeworn as the photographs show. Antique French hand quilted"piqué de cotton" Bed cover/quilt. Measures about 70" x 80" Filled with natural soft and fairly thick batting making this a warm medium weight cover. Hand quilted with g r een thread for the quilting pattern which shows up beautifully on the yellow side- one or two areas where the stitches are missing. A 19th century quilt. Entirely hand made with only some very small holes which don't need repairing. On the yellow side there a re a couple of very small areas which have been rubbed or caught and a faint stain on corner. Photographed. On the green side. A stain(shadow) in the middle and fading from sunlight. A n antique hand made quilt which has aged beautifully. Have freshly washed. Ready to use.

Vintage French hand stitched boutis Rose fabric on one side/ pink check on the other. It is all hand stitched and hand quilted using a thin natural cotton thread. This quilt has been professionally dry cleaned. However there are some dark spots as shown in photos. There are some small holes throughout the textile. Also shown in the photos. The edges of this quilt have damage which could possibly be repaired, but I felt these were part of the charm. I used this beautiful textile spilling out of a large harvest basket in my entry way so the amount of damage did not matter. You can imagine your own great use for this textile. Dear Friends: I have missed being on Ebay most of the summer. But am feeling much better and ready to list another French boutis wholecloth quilt. It is an wonderful quilt of the traditional colors of Provence The front of the quilt is an exciting french soupcon of paisley patterns in red and blue, flowers in red and pink with green stems and leaves on a background of golden yellow. The back of the quilt and the font trim is in the same golden yellow color of the back. This has many similar characteristics to the amazing ivory Boutis that is listed, but the pattern is not as intricate as you would find in a solid boutis. Here the quilting allows for larger sections of trapunto and bubbling, while still exhibiting a pronounced pattern that is more readily translated when looking at the solid backing. This quilt is not without a few issues. ... moreThat I have been assured, by the women who does any restoration work for me in textiles and designer clothing. I tool the quilt into her and we counted 19 places in the backside of the quilt of where the colored cloth has pulled away and two corners that need restitching in the seam. When we carefully lifted the cloth in several of the places, the full cloth was still in existence. Most of the places are very small, but they all show up, because of the stuffing against a solid color. At this time, I am having the back of the quilt repaired in the above mention places. The quilt came from my French quilt lady in Bath. England. I got this quilt and the Eiderdown at the same time, however, I put this one in my suitcase and had her send me the Eiderdown. This really is a stunning quilt and no one will have any doubt where it was made. I must admit. That I love linens more than any other thing to have an obsession over. This has spent many a cold night on our queen size bed underneath a duvet. The size is 66" x 82" It fits exactly on the top of our bed and then with a duvet, one can be all set for a cold winter. One side, is a wonderful nature scene, with a stunning tree, floral and foliage design! This side uses a light to medium weight cotton fabric, and the colors are wonderful! Soft gray blues, faded reds, moss greens, and cream. The pattern is wonderful! The reverse side is a stunning carpet pattern, using a medium to heavy weight, cretonne weave fabric! The colors again are so wonderfully rich! Including: raspberry red, sienna, muted butter yellow, deep gray blues, pink and peach! This textile has a wool batting between the layers and is all hand stitched using a gold toned thread. It is 100% hand quilted and stitched closed. I have laundered this stunning quilt and it is ready to use! ... moreEach side has some little holes that can either be left as is, or can be closed by hand. The nature scenes side has some holes that can either be closed or patched. I can happily find some fabric for patching! The holes are not large, but they are there. There are many very small holes in this side as it was a lighter weight fabric than the reverse. The carpet pattern side was made using a heavier weight fabric, and there are only a few small holes and some gorgeous hand stitched darns! Antique French hand made quilt. Boutis or piqé de cotton A ntique French entirely hand sewn piqé de cotton. Quilted bed cover or boutis, about 72" square. Pale lilac flowers framed with dark mauve. Soft sage green foliage on a cream ground. Back is brick damask weave. Pale shadow stains which faded when I machine washed at 30°. If washed hotter they will probably disappear. Very minor unstitching. Everything is firmly in place. The brick damask side has a few holes and one or two light stains. See photos. Washed and dried. In very good antique condition. Antique French huge hand made quilt. Boutis or piqé de cotton A ntique French early 1900's piqué de cotton. Quilt or boutis. Entirely hand made pure cotton bed cover about 72" x 81" A thick natural batting between the two covers. Held in place with expert hand stitching- see the pink side for the quilting pattern. Held to the light to show an area at one end where the batting has moved because some of the stitches are loose. One side is a creamy beige ground with small pale mauve and pale brown lozenges. The other pink with fine black stripes. There were some dark stains on the beige side. I machine washed at 30°, the stains have faded, if washed at a higher temperature they will probably fade further or even disappear. I decided to spend last week on a mini buying trip- visiting all my contacts in the North of England and Southern Scotland. I managed to find some beautiful Victorian and Edwardian items– amongst other treats, a collection of silk shawls, fabulous buttons, Victorian christening gowns from an estate in Northumberland, and some stunning hand stitched Durham quilts. I also had a delivery from France, so February begins with a rather splendid mixture of French, Scottish and English treasures… enjoy browsing! An absolute stunner! This is the most beautifully hand stitched antique French quilt I have seen for ages. One side has a tiny pink and brown floral sprigged design. ... moreThe other is a pale, plain buttermilk. It would also make a perfect throw- it measures 182cm x 222cm- perfect for snuggling up by the fire, or folding at the end of your bed or chaise longue! It is in excellent condition- no signs of wear to the hand stitched edges. And no holes, rips or tears. The front is in excellent condition with no marks or stains. The reverse has a few pale storage marks, but these will probably disappear if you decide to clean it. Beautiful 19th century boutis in fabulous condition! More photographs below. PLEASE READ. Still perfectly useable. The faded pink side a very fine cotton with fuschia flowers. Light olive foliage on a pinky beige ground. Wearing at edges and in the middle. Pale pink rose patches. The other side is a dark aubergine ground with a golden beige floral motive. This is a thicker cotton. Only found one repair. At one point in its' long life someone machined red binding around the edges. This was a long time ago and it has worn to shreds. There are some stains which may disappear with washing. SUPERB ANTIQUE FRENCH SMALL QUILT BOUTIS FLORAL PROVENCAL EMPIRE 1790-1810
This is an exceptionally attractive small and early quilt. And dates from the late 18th or early 19th century. It is of a small colourful chintz design, and is backed with a dark brown and white check and stripe. There is neat diamond quilting all over, with stripes of quilting forming the border. The pictures show this. It has a thin batting. The quilt originates from the South of France. This is one of the prettiest early quilts I have seen. And is light-weight but firm. The condition is excellent for the age, and there are just a few very small, hard to find openings on the reverse only. As seen. There was no effort to match the brown and white cotton with the seam across the reverse. There is no seam on the front. A wonderful little quilt with the multitude of uses. MARCELLA BEDSPREAD FRENCH DOWRY Boutis Piqué de Marseille Pure White Quality
Sooo hard to find. Even in France. These antique Marcella bedspreads are named from the French Mediterranean port of Marseille, where this type of woven bedspreads started in the middle of years 1800. Then Lancashire cotton industry developed a mechanised technique of weaving double cloth with an enclosed heavy cording weft. The resulting imitation Marseille quilts became an important industry for Lancashire from the late 18th to the early 20th century(Wikipedia) This marvellous and authentic coverlet/ bedspread is truly French and antique. Coming from a traditional dowry/ trousseau, probably Provence/ end of years 1800. It is a stunning array of a large central medallion with sun flowers, and highly raised lilies, acanthus leaves, scrolled frise, diamond bands. on a textured backgound. The patterns are incredibly tri-dimensional, full of ... moredepth and movement. It is not easy to picture white linens and really the photos don't do it justice. Measuring 86"61 x 74"80(220 cm x 190 cm) So a bit heavy. and snowy white, except some storage marks that will wash beautifully. There are also some dust marks and two or three intricate repairs showing that the coverlet has been oloved and taken care of. A SOMPTUOUS FAMILY HEIRLOOM. GORGEOUS ON A BED OR SOFA. O nce I saw one displayed as a table cloth on an antique farm table. The result was simply stunning, a marvellous decorator piece!

Morceau(one quarter) of antique French boutis/quilt/coverlet. Ca. 1910/20, all hand-quilted and sewn, displaying the same floral cretonne on both sides. The top side fabric is applied and quilted against the wool batting. On reverside, there is the traditional red satinette between the floral fabric and the wool batting, see photo 6. The cotton fabric is a lovely antique cretonne printed with small pink rose bouquets and swags of purple lilac or wisteria. Measuring 39"1/2 square. It has two hemmed edges, the two others are crude cut. There are some tears and wear as shown on pictures. And minor staining on one side, see photos as they are part of the description.
