As far as quilting and the extraordinary patterns of tiny stitches. This is the best whitework quilt I have ever had and even seen outside of book pictures. It is absolutely museum quality. It is square and measures 82" square putting it in the 1830-50 range. These are most often brides quilts. The quilting ranges to 20 stitches per inch and even tighter for pattern quality. It is absolutely perfectly quilted all over done with fundamental love and joy. the most dynamic center 12 pointed star or sun. The sun center has 12 beautifully porportioned overlapping rays. This GORGEOUS cotton 1890's(some fabrics are earlier) center medallion/postage stamp/4-patch/diamond in a square tied quilt is all hand stitched. It measures 78" X 80" and is in very good condition. AFRICAN AMERICAN QUILT VINTAGE ANTIQUE 1950-1960 MEDALLION HOUSETOP VARIATION HERE WE HAVE AN ORIGINAL AFRICAN-AMERICAN QUILT This is a great example of a make-do quilt; making a very attractive quilt out of small scraps of a variety of fabrics. It includes cottons. Wool blends, poly/cotton blends and poly. The back of the quilt is lining fabric; suit type lining. There are three 12 patch medallions in the center of the quilt with house-top strips surrounding the medallions. A heavy binding was hand sewn on the edge of the quilt. Cot-size quilt was very common for children and farm laborers who stayed out in the barn. It has no holes/tears. Loose seams, discolorations, or stains on the top of the quilt. The back of the quilt- the lining fabric has four small thinning areas with small separations in the fabric. STURDY cotton medallion quilt is hand and machine pieced and hand quilted, with fabrics dating from 1870 to 1930. The inner field has rolling stone blocks, surrounded by a flying geese border, then an outer nine patch variation border. It measures a generous 80" X 82" and is in mint. Unwashed condition, with a couple of small, faint age spots and no wear. There is quilting around the piecework and in straight line designs in the background. All at even 6-7 stitches to the inch. The back and hand stitched binding are the same vintage cheater cloth quilt. And the batting is thin. Whimsical late nineteenth century conversation prints can be found in places. EXCITING rare CRISP never washed MEDALLION pieced antique quilt TOP with cheddar
Miss the old version of this page? everything on one long page. otmce. Ere is an absolutely splendid. Striking little pieced, unwashed quilt top in a rare medallion setting. Although many of the fabrics look much earlier, including that delightful focal-point grandly patterned Cheddar, the top probably dates to around the 1890's when a reliable, durable black first became available for fabric printing. Originally collected in Quebec. Size This quilt top measures about 68 x 72 inches inches. The center focal piece of cheddar yardage is about 14 inches square. The pieced zigzags are less than 1 inch wide. Construction The top is entirely hand-pieced. Very neatly, save for that last lone border along a single side, which was added by machine. Condition The quilt top is in excellent. Notably crisp, starchy condition, clearly never washed ... moreand very nearly flawless. I can find maybe four small, well hidden spots in that oversized pink printed gingham pattern, a single spot in one blue band and that slight mottling on the single piece of outer border where the purple is beginning its inevitable shift towards tan. Antique Calico Crib Quilt~ Postage Stamp, Center Medallion, NY
Very nice. Early crib quilt in a Postage Stamp patchwork with center medallion. there is a border on each end. Nice variety of calicoes are c1880-1910's including cadet and indigo blue, madders, ginghams, black mourning, shirting, etc. Backing is a double pink which also serves as the binding, being brought back to front and machine stitched. Thin cotton batting with all-over cross hatch hand-quilting at about 9 v.s.i. A few old stains that are light brownish and small-see pics. Quilt is in nice, clean condition, and unwashed by me. No splits or tears that I can find, little edgewear also, probably used little. The little quilt measures about 47" x 62" Found in upstate NY, thank you and enjoy. It's a Crazy quilt with a center medallion Wheel of Chance that circles around a square block rather than the typical circle. It has lots of nice hand stitching with a variety of embroidery stitches used. The fabrics are mostly silk, with a few cotton pieces. Backing is a gorgeous forest green satin. Quilt is foundation pieced and apprears to be entirely hand stitched. Size is a very generous 78" x 98"+/ Circas early to mid 1900s. Overall. This is in good condition. There are several pieces of silk that are either deteriorated or missing. My guess is around 20-30 pieces, more or less. I tried to count them but its very hard to find them. With a variety of different patterns- log cabin, pyramid, sawtooth, postage stamp, etc. arranged in a concentric configuration. It measures 74" X 76" and is in good. Unwashed condition, with varying degrees of deterioration in approximately 10% of the silks(the worst is shown in the photos) including the binding in places. The back is an early solid brown cotton. Antique Handmade BUCILLA? Embroidered Quilt Blue & White Flower Medallion CUTTER
Very old quilt that I purchased at a recent estate sale. The seller thought her grandmother made it from a kit in the 40's. I do not know if it was a bucilla kit or not. There are 16 squares that are floral embroidery. Each one is different. I have taken a photo of some of the squares. The workmanship is very nice. Some fading on the blue parts as well as a few patches of white(maybe bleach spots on the blue. This is still a great old quilt that can be used in any cottage chic setting. The blue is a very soft blue. The quilting is all hand done as is the embroidery work. Some with french knots etc. Batting is thin due to years of wear. Outer fabric appears to be strong old cotton. I am so amazed that I found no broken stitches.

RARE ANTIQUE EARLY 19TH CENTURY CHINTZ MEDALLION BIRD OF PARADISE QUILT TOP
Found in Hillsdale. New York, this rare, museum-worthy chintz medallion quilt top is antique, early 19th century, circa 1800-1810. It was critiqued by a quilt restoration expert in a quilt study group on the east coast. Gleaned from this review is the following: Sewing: Whip stitching technique is typical late 18th into 19th century. Many imported fabrics- European plus Indian origin plus whaling trade routes. Fabrics: Diversity of copper plate-etched fabrics- many with 2 overlays of color. Labor intensive but very sophisticated early techniques. Which indicates that fabrics were expensive in their own time. Many small printing houses produced distinctive prints and these traveled via trade routes. This awesome quilt top measures 97" x 75" The chintz medallion bird of paradise is set on point and measures 26" square. It is ... moresurrounded by triangle blocks. Applique hexagon blocks, and bordered in the corners with chintz blocks. They are then surrounded by a multitude of early four-patch blocks, hexagon blocks, and chintz blocks. The four-patch blocks measure 6" x 6" the hexagon blocks measure 7" x 8" and the chintz blocks measure 7" x 7" The top is entirely hand-sewn, most of the blocks using the tiny whip-stitching technique. The quilt top is in good condition overall. There is some age-related staining on some of the blocks. But nothing major. There are no open seams that I could see. A couple of the four-patch blocks shows some deterioration of the brown fabric, and a couple of the chintz blocks show some instability, but for the most part, the blocks have integrity. The colors are strong and not faded. The chintz still exhibits its glaze, which you can see if you hold the fabric up to the light. This quilt top has never been washed.
