Johanna Maria Lind(1820-1887) Considered by many as the most highly regarded opera singer of the 19th century. Lind was already considered a famous Swedish singer before coming to America on a concert tour from 1850-1852. Under contract with P.T. Barnum, she gave 93 concerts here in America before going back to Europe. She was such a sensation while in America that glass houses made pictorial flasks with her image on them and they also sold the glass inserts to button makers who also jumped on the bandwagon by making buttons with her image on them. This collection of"Jenny Lind" buttons were made during the 1850's and were amassed almost 50 years ago by a collector from Massachusetts. Having 39 buttons mounted on a card and measuring between 9-14mm. Most of my buttons were obtained years ago through estate sales and antique stores. Back before button collecting became extremely popular and the truly vintage buttons became harder to find! I don't use modern. Cheap plastic, filler buttons. All of the buttons that I use are generally from the 1800's through1950's. I try never to"harm" a button. I devise creative ways of using these treasured keepsakes without ... moregluing or harming them in any way. Only gluing buttons, or removing shanks if they were damaged when I received them. And when I do use glue. You won't find'globs' or'strings' of glue on my vintage button creations. I do not use a hot glue gun and mass produce. I use only the finest jewelers' adhesives. And take my time designing just the right piece. In some of my creations I also use vintage jewelry parts. Stampings and findings. Again, nothing modern is used. Several pieces have 14K gold or sterling silver chains. A good portion of my vintage brass findings were obtained from a woman who purchased them years and years ago from a vintage costume jewelry manufacturer who had gone out of business. These gorgeous brass findings had been sitting in their warehouse for years before being bought. They are vintage. And yet they are unused. Most of the findings are from the 1940's and 1950's. Because I only use vintage or antique buttons. They may show wear and age. This is expected from something that is 60-100 years old. Each piece is a one-of-a-kind original. This is a very nice lot of 42 antique waistcoat buttons. They have been together since at least 1974. When they were entered into the 36th Annual Meeting and Exhibit Of National Button Society in Concord, New Hampshire. They won a white merit ribbon, which will be included to the auction winner. I am not a button collector. So hopefully the pictures will describe themselves. There seems to be all kinds. They are attached to the card by their shanks. Lot of 38 Metal Waistcoat Buttons • One & Two-Piece • Brass, White Metal, Pewter
Here. For you, is a great lot of antique Victorian waistcoat buttons. Of the lot. Five have self shanks. The rest have loop shanks, one of which also has a metal plate which shows some rust. Two have Paris back marks; the remainder are not marked. Many of these buttons have floral designs. Some have fancy borders, one is a lion's head, two are enhanced by cut steels, and one has subtle iridescent luster. These buttons range from 1/2" to 3/4" in diameter.

They are both black, the man looks much like a soldier of some type; which is unusual for a waistcoat because most of them are of women or just a design made of glass and he has a small chip on the front of the button, and the shank is wobbly. The other one is a bust of Jenny Lind; the lady one has a Paris back mark. Their measurements are 23/64”just under 3/8” ½” and they both have loop shanks. some of the photos. It is a perfectly good example of an antique charmstring. It measures 7/16” and it has an inserted wire loop shank. But they aren’t perfect. One of them, the blue one, has a dent on the top edge that is not a chip. The dent looks more like a defect, the goldstone one is excellent, the clear one with reverse carving underneath has a wobbling shank. Other than that, these are fine looking collectable buttons. They measure 5/16” ½” 9/16” and They all have loop shanks. I always test my buttons for Bakelite and they are guaranteed to be what the listing states! FYI: I have tested these for Bakelite by rubbing with baking soda to see if the button leaves a yellow stain behind ... moreor I use the hot water smell method(I do not use 409 or Semichrome because of the chemicals they contain) I will be listing several other buttons in the future so Check out my other items!
