Pretty Late 19th-Early 20th Cent CELLULOID Fancy Brass Border Center Plate Roses
A very pretty Celluloid button with a fancy brass collet with a fancy border surrounding a central plate on which are painted pink roses with green leaves under a celluloid pane. It has an unpainted tin back with a wire loop shank. Measures just a nudge over 1 inch in diameter. While I would still class it as excellent antique condition it does have some age yellowing/mellowing to the floral print. It likely was white when manufactured but has turned the ivory color age allows. Please use the photographs to aid with my description. They are multi-piece metal buttons that always have a rim that folds over the edge to the back. They have loop shanks. Collectors look for different material centers. Shapes, and subjects. This Austrian Tiny has a celluloid center with tiny flowers. The oval shape is uncommon. Late 1800's to early 1900's. 7/16" Japanned back with loop shank. Excellent condition. Doll size metal button with a faceted dark ruby color rhinestone surrounded by cream color celluloid and a stamped brass border that bears a hint of red tint. Here is a lovely 1& 1/4 inch brass button with marbled celluloid and a textured black glass center surrounded with a thin line of twisted brass. There is a bit of dust in the edges. VINTAGE/ANTIQUE POMPOM CELLULOID? FLOWER BUTTON WITH DELICATE PURPLE CENTER
I can imagine this beautiful button as a necklace. It's fragile look may be deceiving. The reason I say this is because it's very old and none of the petals seems to be broken. The shank on the back is made of plastic? from what I've seen so far most of them are also celluloid. This may have been a replacement shank, I'm not sure it could be the original, I'm just guessing. The center is a deep purple and I hope you can see it in the photo. There seems to be dye traces on the back also. It measures over 1 1/2 inches from far petal to far petal. Please not: All the descriptions I give are what I'm reading about these buttons in books by Elizabeth Hughes"The Big Book of Buttons" or from eBay. Many I can't find any information on. I don't know anything about buttons and would suggest if you buy the buttons ... morebuy it because you"just love it" or study the photos and do research.
