A very nice set of 5 Victorian Metal buttons. Stamped tinted metal in a copper color of a foliate or leaf pattern on one side. On the other are stamped imitation cut steels over a mirror back. Classed as a twinkle button by collectors. Each button measures just a nudge over 1/2" in diameter. The backs have a wire loop shank and are Japanned(painted black) While the mirror back was very difficult to photograph it is strongly visible in hand. Not always easy to find matching sets. Listing 74. 43 Small brass. Cut steel, metal trimmed with celluloid, little jewels, black glass, MOP, etc. Largest button about 5/8 inch in diameter. One plain button says New York City button works. Please see pictures. Most of the Underleak collection was completed before and during the early years of the Second World war, so most of the collection would have come before 1941. These buttons have been boxed up for 60 to 75 years. They were used and displayed prior to being put away. Please see pictures to determine the condition. Ask questions or ask for more pictures if you want to see an additional views. We have inherited a button collection from Minnesota. We have counted over 70.000 buttons so far. They were started by a woman in 1867, who, as a child, began her first charm string. We understand she was 7 years old when the collection ... morewas begun. Her name was Mrs. Anna Underleak. She exhibited her collection at the Minnesota State Fair in 1939. At that time, she had close to 40,000 buttons. She and her daughter determined to have the largest collection in Minnesota, and it appears, they kicked it into full gear in the late 30's early 1940's because many of the cards of buttons are dated during that time. We are not sure when Mrs. Underleak died but her daughter died in the early 1970's and our mother purchased the whole collection as part of the daughter's estate. When our mother counted the collection in around 1999-2000, she came up with the total of 83,000 buttons. We have now inherited it, and are beginning to sell it. We are not sure whether it ever was the largest collection in Minnesota. But there are several newspaper articles, with pictures, that show Mrs. Underleak surrounded by her buttons in 1939. She was in the St. Paul Paper and the Pine River Journal. We have no experience with buttons, other than using them, so we are trying to learn about them as quickly as we can. These unusual button types were identified by a button expert(not me) and would add interest to any button collection. The shoe buttons were used to fasten shoes. As the name suggests, the whistle button is shaped so that one can blow in it and make a sound, The picture button is metal and shoes a house in the mountains, The twinkle button has a reflective background with a grid over it, and the Victorian are fancy buttons for that day. This auction is for three lovely antique etched. Pierced brass metal twinkle mirror back buttons with a silver metal backing. They each measure approximately 3/8" square and 1/4" depth. These are being sold"AS IS" I believe that if these were shined up. They would be sparkling and one could see the inside of the tiny holes more clearly. If one looks closely at photos, there are iridescent colors of purples, pinks, blue/turquoise.see Photo 2 in particular) Photos have been taken in natural light with no flash. They are a darker brass and are not super bright.they are also much more delicate than photos depicted at a closer view. Please take this into consideration. They look like little pillows.
