Although they are just over 3/8" across, the brass is very elaborately stamped and cut forming a sort of bezel setting over the mother of pearl centers. Vintage / Antique Mother Of Pearl Button With Steel Cut Moon And Star
This button is small at 9/16" but it packs a lot into that size. It is mother of pearl that shines with iridescence under light especially a green color. The circumference has a higher ridge and inside the drum created inside that ridge there is a riveted steel cut crescent moon and a steel cut star surrounding the sew through holes of the button. It is old and is not perfect. Having some light rust spots and some roughness, but it is quite unusual and just imagine the work it took to create such a button. The dime in the last picture is included to illustrate relative size and is not included in the auction. Payment is expected within two days of the end of the auction. Antique Victorian or Earlier Large Mother of Pearl Cut Steel Fancy MOP Button
I bought a collection of very old buttons out of a top drawer of an antique cabinet. This is an auction for one of those buttons. I actually have three of these which I will be selling separately in 3 different auctions but at the same time. If you want all three. Please bid on three in each of their respective auctions. THIS AUCTION IS FOR ONE OF THE BUTTONS. The other two are for sale in a separate listing. Click on SELLERS other auctions to bid on the others. This button is very large. It measures 1 1/2" It has some weight to it. It has a combination of exquisite carving. Applied carved leaves and cut steel beads and the ends securly fastened with expert tiny holes in this wonderful button. The pictures do not accurately show the luster of this fine piece. It has a hank loop in the back for attaching to a cloak. Jacket, etc. The condition ... moreis really nice for its age. There may be a tad of discoloration on one or two of the steel beads but no problems with the MOP, abalone or whatever other medium they used. There is a blue and pink sheen to the shell when the button is held in certain light. Never seen anything like it. You may want to search for my other listings and check out the other buttons. There does not appear to be any chips to the Mother-of-Pearl. Two of them are missing the round steel part, that belongs under the shank on the back(see photo) Everything else looks fine. A very nice group of six matching mother of pearl circles with metal eight point stars. Each button is about 1/2"5/8" across. They each have a metal loop in the back that is intact.
