I collected these. ... moreAs I found them, over time. There is a nice variety here and in a variety of sizes. They range in diameter from 3/4" to 1 5/8" I have broken them down into groups of six, and pictures 2-11 show them in close-up, so you can see what is here. I started with the largest ones in picture 2, and tried to work down in size from there. I included a quarter at the top of each picture to give you a size comparison. Each button is different and I gave them a light cleaning. All have their shanks, but some of those may be bent. I noticed some light rust on the backs of several. These are not perfect, but are just so much fun, and will surely be enjoyed for years to come. There are a few Gay 90's(pictures 2& 8) one with glass(picture 3, top right) several with an Art Deco feel, pictorials, cut steel, cages, and many others. As I worked to clean them, I thought that each one was special in its own way. The pictures will do a much better job of describing them to you than I can. This auction is for almost two pounds of Victorian and antique crochet and fabric buttons. Ranging in size from 2" in diameter down to 3/8" in diameter. I would say that they are more than 90% unmarked: the ones that are include TW&W Paris; W&K Co; W&K Cie; Defiance; The UB Co. NY; Geschuetzts; D&A Tresse; G&C Paris; NC Marque; Haute Nouveaute; Guarantie Solide; and Schotte Bros. The most visually striking ones have no markings, and some of them are just spectacular! Mainly pad backs or threadbacks. With the very occasional inserted loop metal shank. Some are plain fabric, the majority are decorated with crochet, sequins, patterned thread designs, and one handpainted button that appears to be silk: a flapper portrait! Some are not intact. And a few may be missing beading or may have partial fabric loss. The vast ... moremajority of the buttons are in very good to excellent condition. These 4 buttons were my mother-in-laws who made her living doing needlework in Sicily before moving to NY. The card they are on says NY. They have been around for as long as I can remember which is more than 50 years. The two larger ones are 2 1/4" side to side extends 1/4"The two smaller ones are 3/4" across.

Antique Thistle Buttons Set of 6 - NBS Glass in Metal with Fabric 1800s - 1900s
A wonderful set of six antique thistle buttons. They have glass dome tops. Set in metal with(I think) metal thistles and fabric backgrounds. I believe the National Button Society classifies them as"One piece mounting en cliche on fabric" but am not positive. These are very old, late 1800s to early 1900s and are offered to you as is. I imagine it is quite rare to find one of these, let alone a set of six! One has a crack in the glass. One is missing the fabric, and another has a shank that is bent and needs to be soldered closed. There is also wear/fading to the paint on all pieces. I do not know how to grade buttons. No marks. They measure about 29mm across, just over 1" I am not a button expert but will do my best to answer any questions. Please view all photos as they are considered part of the description. Victorian era black glass buttons with imitation fabric painted tops measure 7/8" in diameter. The colors are pink. Blue, and white. All of the buttons have a self shank molded with the button as one piece. The buttons are in very good condition. One has a couple of chips on the back. There is minimal paint wear(see photos) Very nice buttons. They would make a very nice addition to anyone's antique button collection. Nice to have 3 larger buttons that match!

They are about 11/16” diameter x 5/16” thick, and their back can be sewn thru with needle and thread for mounting. I had some others like these that were coming apart. So I examined them and this is how I think these are made. A dome shape piece of molded horn with a hole in the center is wrapped with silk thread. In and out of the hole until it is covered, and then more needlework, crochet, and/or glass beads added as finishing touches.and there you have a button like this one! Some that are similar are done by weaving a piece a fabric by hand and stretching it over the horn piece, sewing it together in the back ... moreand then completing with crochet or some type of fancy needle work. I always test my buttons for Bakelite and they are guaranteed to be what the listing states! FYI: I have tested these for Bakelite by rubbing with baking soda to see if the button leaves a yellow stain behind or I use the hot water smell method(I do not use 409 or Semichrome because of the chemicals they contain) I will be listing several other buttons in the future so Check out my other items! Antique Buttons Set of BLack GLass with Fabric Center Death Head Knot

They have fabric centers that look to me to be a death head knot. They had string or fabric shanks and measure about 5/8" and are in very good condition for age and type! Antique Wood & Bone Molds for Making Fabric or Thread Buttons, Bone Rings
Group of assorted antique wood& bone molds used for making buttons by covering them with thread or fabric. There are 23 wood molds that measure roughly 1& 1/8" long(shapes are slightly oblong and may vary just a touch) 14 that are roughly 7/8" 8 that are a little over 1/2" and 9 wood molds of various size(from just over 3/8" to 1& 3/16" There are 7 bone molds that are about 5/8" 7 measuring roughly 7/8" two that are 1& 1/8" and two odd ones. Also included are some bone rings(one set dyed brown) I am unsure of their purpose. But assume they were used for some sewing intent. Note: enlarge pic for detail. Striking set of Victorian drum buttons with a textured. Copper-colored top backed with velvet"dots" encompassed by brass sides and rim, with a steel back and loop-shank.
