18 Antique Glass Buttons w' Silver Luster Finish
18 Antique Black Glass Buttons w' Silver Luster Finish At first glance. These buttons with their shiny rippled surface and hint of red in the grooves look very modern- perhaps made to go with a psychedelic 1960's or early 70's outfit. Look at the back, however, and it's obvious they are much older. There are old brass looped shanks, and the back surface has the slightly wrinkled look of black glass. Glass buttons were made from the Victorian era until the 1950's. Because of the shank style, I think that these were made from between the late 19th century to thte early 1920's. The sides and front have a shiny metallic look, a silver luster finish that was fired on the the glass. The buttons are just under 3/4 of an inch in diameter. A few are just silver colored, but most have a trace of red in the grooves- some buttons ... morehave a slightly darker red than others. They catch the light beautifully and the buttons with a trace of red look different each way they are turned- in some directions they look redder than others. They are in very good condition, a few have tiny chips.ostly on the back edge, and the shiny surface has worn slightly in places, showing a bit of the black glass beneath, but these are truly spectacular and unusual buttons! 24 Gorgeous Black Glass Buttons. Small size. Average size is about 9/16. When I went to measure. I think I discovered a button that isn't glass. It has a back mark which says Pat reg. Dec 28, 1860. I don't know what it is made of. I mistook it for glass. It's not jet. Maybe horn or rubber? Has a matte finish with leaves and berries plant design. I will add a couple more glass buttons to compensate.

Here are 3 beautiful black glass buttons from the 19th century. These are large. 1 1/8th inch across, and decorated with silver luster. These have a design of molded crescent shapes with faceted polygons and dots to resemble cut steel rivets of older style buttons that were steel with rivets. These have applied wire shanks. They are in excellent vintage condition, slight rubbing on the silver luster.
