I don't use modern. Cheap plastic, filler buttons. All of ... morethe buttons that I use are generally from the 1800's through1950's. I try never to"harm" a button. I devise creative ways of using these treasured keepsakes without gluing or harming them in any way. Only gluing buttons, or removing shanks if they were damaged when I received them. And when I do use glue. You won't find'globs' or'strings' of glue on my vintage button creations. I do not use a hot glue gun and mass produce. I use only the finest jewelers' adhesives. And take my time designing just the right piece. In some of my creations I also use vintage jewelry parts. Stampings and findings. Again, nothing modern is used. Several pieces have 14K gold or sterling silver chains. A good portion of my vintage brass findings were obtained from a woman who purchased them years and years ago from a vintage costume jewelry manufacturer who had gone out of business. These gorgeous brass findings had been sitting in their warehouse for years before being bought. They are vintage. And yet they are unused. Most of the findings are from the 1940's and 1950's. This is a highly desirable and very scarce original Victorian button with a stunning champleve design of handpainted flowers and cut steel rivets for sparkle. The top metal layer is crimped onto the brass base and I'm wondering if it might be a thin sheet of gold- as shown. Minor dings to enamel which are barely visible to the naked eye but show up too well in my pics! This was sheer murder to photograph, the black background gives the best color- c1880s-1900, approx. 7/8ths of an inch in diameter- terrific period details and design, mild wear, so elegant. A very nice set of 5 Victorian Metal buttons. Stamped tinted metal in a copper color of a foliate or leaf pattern on one side. On the other are stamped imitation cut steels over a mirror back. Classed as a twinkle button by collectors. Each button measures just a nudge over 1/2" in diameter. The backs have a wire loop shank and are Japanned(painted black) While the mirror back was very difficult to photograph it is strongly visible in hand. Not always easy to find matching sets. Nice Victorian Era Poured Steel to Represent Cut Steels Button inc Fleur de Lis
A nice. Interesting imitation cut steel button. Really quite intricately made. A poured or molded steel top made to represent cut steels. They include round, decorative and fleur de lis shapes. The only true cut steel is the pin shank. The top is then mounted by brackets to the reverse that looks to be a matching cut brass back with an elongated U shank. Measures 13/16ths inch in diameter. Beautiful Victorian Era 1860's-1880's Round Carved Shell Cameo Button Cut Steels
A nice little Victorian era carved shell cameo button. Circa 1860's-1880's. These little cameos were quickly and cheaply made for the masses. They were not made to be viewed close up. Rather just for the effect on the piece of clothing on which they were worn. They are nice examples from a long ago era. This one is of a woman reclining under a tree. It is claw set with a border ring of sparkling cut steels(brighter in hand than under the extreme magnification of the photograph) It measures 10/16ths inch in diameter. 3/4" Circa: 1880-1890 Excellent Condition Please Note: Lately there has been a proliferation of brand new buttons being described- and sold in ebay's"Antique Buttons" category- as" 1940's NOS" Old French Metal" Antique Vintage Art Nouveau Deco Victorian" which would be difficult since those are three distinct eras) etc. etc. including many buttons with cats, rodents, other animals, fables, buttons similar to this one, and other popular subjects used in the 19th Century. Most of these listings claim the buttons are"rare" hard to find" when these run out they're gone" and other similar, frantic verbiage. Ebay"completed listings" are full of them. This has continued unabated for several years now, I guess because it is so profitable as new, novice button collectors ... morejoin the ranks every day, and there are no ebay Vero police for antique buttons. Unfortunately, for most of these buttons, this simply is not true. They are not even"1940's" re-strikes but, rather, BRAND NEW buttons. It is beyond dishonest(IMO, it is criminal) to lie about the provenance(or anything else) in a listing in order to command usurious prices for something readily available on the open market for just a few dollars each if one knows where to look. One also has to wonder why the"scarce" NOS" stock keeps multiplying exponentially. With new versions uncovered every day. But the fact that it does continue unabated makes my pastime of traveling around the country and the world to bring my buyers the finest in AUTHENTIC antique and vintage buttons more difficult, and expensive, with a cost that ultimately gets passed on to all button buyers. There are mostly metal buttons, some with pictures, some with cut steels, and others just very unusual. There are a few glass buttons and some Mother-of-Pearl with set cut steels and carved. Most of the buttons have the loop shank(see photo of backs) The largest button is the glass one at the top and that is 1 1/4" in diameter(and has a chip on the edge) The majority of the rest of the buttons are in good condition. The metal loop shanks on a lot of them are bent but could, easily, be bent right. Some have matches but most do not.
