On the card Czechoslovakia is actually spelled"Czecho-Slovakia, a variety of official spelling used from 1918 to 1920 and 1938 to 1939. The La Mode brand of Bumenthal Lansing Co. buttons where designed in New York during these periods with some ideas coming from Europe. Glass La Mode buttons from Czechoslovakia are far less common than most other of the thousands of varieties they made. The card is aged and fire damaged as shown. 4 Tiny Antique Metal and Enamel Buttons w/ Marcasite?Steel Jewels Beads Scrolls
We have inherited a button collection from Minnesota. There are over 83.000 buttons. They were started by a woman in 1867, who, as a child, began her first charm string. We understand she was 7 years old when the collection was begun. Her name was Mrs. Underleak. She exhibited her collection at the Minnesota State Fair in 1939. At that time, she had over 13,000 buttons. She and her daughter determined to have the largest collection in Minnesota, and it appears, they kicked it into full gear in the 1940's because many of the cards of buttons are dated during that decade. We are not sure when Mrs. Underleak died but her daughter died in the early 1970's and our mother purchased the whole collection as part of the daughter's estate. It is very possible that our mother added more buttons to it, but, when our mother counted the collection ... morein around 1999, she came up with the total of 83,000 buttons. We have now inherited it, and are beginning to sell it. We are not sure whether it ever was the largest collection in Minnesota. But there are several newspaper articles, with pictures, that show Mrs. Underleak surrounded by her buttons in 1939. She was in the St. Paul Paper and the Pine River Journal. We have no experience with buttons, other than using them, so we are trying to learn about them as quickly as we can. We would love to hear from you experts when we mis-categorize something. We will make every attempt to photograph our listings well, so you can determine what the buttons are, even if we can't tell you. We hope you will be completely satisfied with everything you purchase and come back many times as we work through this delightful, but challenging sale. Antique& Vintage Buttons Up for auction is a lot of antique and vintage buttons found at a local estate sale. Which had belonged to the owners grandmother. Included are enamels. Picture(stork, dragonfly, spider) military, huge celluloids that may or may not have the original shank, black glass, MOP, plastics, wood plus some metal victorian buttons still sewn on the store card. Also included in the auction are what I assume were porcelain floral buttons that have had the shanks removed and then were glued to strips of hat banding. 3 Beautiful cloisonne enamel buttons. A lot of nice colors. In good vintage condition. These came out of my mothers estate. Check out our other buttons and buckle auctions. We will be putting on more Estate items and items that we have collected for over 30 years. The last picture shows some of the items. Most items are from my Grandmothers estate. She would be around 115 if still alive. Millions of dollars worth of Antiques were left in the house when they bought it in the 1930's from her Uncle Charles Chandler. He got the house in 1922 when his brother Henry died. The 2 brothers where rich and traveled the world buying fine items and antiques from all over and were especially fond of Oriental. It was ... moresaid that Charles liked the 1896 Worlds Fair Japanese Exhibit so much that he bought the whole exhibit. Grandmas house was a 3 story. 16 bedroom home, stuffed with antiques. In the 1970's her house full of treasures was appraised at 36 million. She died in 1989 and most items went to auction. Her 3 sons split up the rest.
