Victorian Set Facny 6 Pin Shank Coral Ball Washed Gold Chain Mount Buttons
During the Victorian period coral was highly regarded and heavily used in jewelry and buttons. Although scarce today this set has survived intact. Six small coral ball buttons all hand wrought by a jeweler/artisan. The chain mount has been hand forged; each link soldered to the next to form a nest for the coral ball. The entire mount was then heavily gold washed. The ball has then settled in place by a pin shank to the base. Since they are handmade each button measures a slightly different size. Each is just a nudge under 1/2 side to side or in diameter and just a nudge over 1/2" top to bottom including the shank. An exquisite set that even with some age related wear is yet very collectable. The case has as evidenced in the photographs surface wear. Although all the varnished leather is intact. The velvet is soiled but would I suspect ... moreclean to be at least respectable for display. The buttons themselves have lost 10-20 percent of the heavy gold wash; mostly on the shanks. One button has very minor evidence of verdigris. Yet they are still a very striking set. Striking NORWALK/BENNINGTON Pottery Button c. 1820's-30's Early Pin Shank
This Connecticut/NORWALK/BENNINGTON pottery button is a contemporary of the Colonial Pearl and other early 19th century buttons. As far as is known these buttons were made only in Connecticut between 1825-1853. This one is one of the very early ones. With a large brass pin shank and the thick clay base. The underside is unglazed for the most part. The colors and patterns are beautiful! Color is actually a dark brown and not the reddish brown the camera makes it appear. Color simply appears dependent upon the light reflections. Measures just a hair over 3/4" in diameter. In very good to excellent antique condition. This button is a striking late 18th- early 19th century glass button. Very heavy crystal/glass slightly saucer shaped that appears to have been heavily hand-faceted around the outer rim. Highly polished button measures 1/2 inch in diameter. It has heavy loop brass pin shank typical of the era. Button is in excellent antique condition.
