Listing 170 55 Black Glass. Possibly some Jet buttons. Most are round. Many are decorated with cut steel, or applied gold decorations. Some have siler luster trim. Some have etching. Very pretty. Most of the Underleak collection was completed before and during the early years of the Second World war, so most of the collection would have come before 1941. These buttons have been boxed up for 60 to 75 years. They were used and displayed prior to being put away. Please see pictures to determine the condition. Ask questions or ask for more pictures if you want to see an additional views. We have inherited a button collection from Minnesota. We have counted over 70.000 buttons so far. They were started by a woman in 1867, who, as a child, began her first charm string. We understand she was 7 years old when the collection was begun. Her name was ... moreMrs. Anna Underleak. She exhibited her collection at the Minnesota State Fair in 1939. At that time, she had close to 40,000 buttons. She and her daughter determined to have the largest collection in Minnesota, and it appears, they kicked it into full gear in the late 30's early 1940's because many of the cards of buttons are dated during that time. We are not sure when Mrs. Underleak died but her daughter died in the early 1970's and our mother purchased the whole collection as part of the daughter's estate. When our mother counted the collection in around 1999-2000, she came up with the total of 83,000 buttons. We have now inherited it, and are beginning to sell it. We are not sure whether it ever was the largest collection in Minnesota. But there are several newspaper articles, with pictures, that show Mrs. Underleak surrounded by her buttons in 1939. She was in the St. Paul Paper and the Pine River Journal. We have no experience with buttons, other than using them, so we are trying to learn about them as quickly as we can. Antique Victorian Black Jet Glass Buttons 10 Leaf & Clover/ 4 3-Leaf/ 1 Basket
There is one basket weave pattern button in this lot which has a browner tone to it. This button measures approx. 9/16" in diameter and is signed"IRGC/ Goodyear" on the back. The four with the three leaves etched in the center measure approx. 1/2" in diameter- all four are in very good condition. The ten with the leaf& clover pattern measure approx. 9/16" in diameter. Four of these have tiny nicks in the clover-shaped centers. And all have normal usage scuffs on the backs. Up for auction is a rare set of 12 black glass jet buttons with gold gilt. The buttons have a molded relief design. It is rare to see a set of 12 of these buttons in this condition. One button has the shank missing. On the center tip of 4 of the buttons there is a very very small amount of the glass missing. This can be seen only with a magnifying glass. 2 of the buttons have a little more missing that can just barely be seen by the naked eye. Some of the buttons have very small areas of gold rubbed off. This is a collection of Victorian jet black buttons that a lady put on a tree to give her sister as a present 44 years ago. I doubt you'll ever see another like it. unless she had more than one sister. It is a certainly a one-of-a-kind piece. The picture. Surrounded by a black satin ribbon, is about 7 1/2 x 10: and the frame is 11 x 13 inches. But. It's the buttons that are the neat thing. They are genuine Victorian buttons from the 1800s. There are 30 unique antique jet black buttons, each different. All are fancy, some having an aesthetic appearance with leaves, etc. I've looked closely, and see no two that are exactly alike.
