Happy to offer these exquisite examples of well made AND beautiful vintage. I have dated these c. mid 1800's based on the design and materials. These sweet little brass buttons measure 5/8" Diameter. They are a single layer. Openwork dome with a dimensional floral motif. Each features 8 facet cut steel gems, creating sparkling beauty despite some tarnish. There is a total of 18 buttons. Including 2 which are bent(one of these is missing a steel cut) and 1 other which is only missing a steel cut. Please examine photos carefully for condition and features. These 13 Victorian buttons feature a silvered brass escutcheon in a floral motif with cut steel accents over a shiny sort of midnight blue metal backing. The buttons are about 1/2 an inch across. Overall fair condition with surface rust/patina and shine loss to background piece. Some leaves are bent. Some flowers have lost their silvering. I have not attempted to clean or restore these buttons. They will be well-wrapped and shipped via USPS. Thanks.

Listing 74. 43 Small brass. Cut steel, metal trimmed with celluloid, little jewels, black glass, MOP, etc. Largest button about 5/8 inch in diameter. One plain button says New York City button works. Please see pictures. Most of the Underleak collection was completed before and during the early years of the Second World war, so most of the collection would have come before 1941. These buttons have been boxed up for 60 to 75 years. They were used and displayed prior to being put away. Please see pictures to determine the condition. Ask questions or ask for more pictures if you want to see an additional views. We have inherited a button collection from Minnesota. We have counted over 70.000 buttons so far. They were started by a woman in 1867, who, as a child, began her first charm string. We understand she was 7 years old when the collection ... morewas begun. Her name was Mrs. Anna Underleak. She exhibited her collection at the Minnesota State Fair in 1939. At that time, she had close to 40,000 buttons. She and her daughter determined to have the largest collection in Minnesota, and it appears, they kicked it into full gear in the late 30's early 1940's because many of the cards of buttons are dated during that time. We are not sure when Mrs. Underleak died but her daughter died in the early 1970's and our mother purchased the whole collection as part of the daughter's estate. When our mother counted the collection in around 1999-2000, she came up with the total of 83,000 buttons. We have now inherited it, and are beginning to sell it. We are not sure whether it ever was the largest collection in Minnesota. But there are several newspaper articles, with pictures, that show Mrs. Underleak surrounded by her buttons in 1939. She was in the St. Paul Paper and the Pine River Journal. We have no experience with buttons, other than using them, so we are trying to learn about them as quickly as we can. French Champleve' and Brass Buttons decorated w/ Cut steel points Loop Shank
I am not a button collector- but my mother was- She sewed her entire life and I remember playing in her button can when I was very young- Yes that was the sort of button collector she was- There are probably some special buttons in that can and I will find a rainy day to go through it- But when I opened one of her jewelry boxes there where three sets on buttons inside- This Satsuma pair previously listed in their own auction and this pair- I know something of French Champleve' through my collecting love- I have several Open Salts in Champleve' I tried to find as much information as I could on these before listing them- If I have made any gross or even minor mistakes- Please feel free to teach me- I think from what I have seen previously and currently posted- that the following pertains to these two- They are French Champleve' ... morecirca 1880's- They have a loop shank- The decorations are cut steel points and all are present on both buttons- With open salts- the blending colors of the Champleve' are considered to be older and made during a time when craftsmanship was honored- There are no cracks or chips and they are about an inch in diameter- As with the Satsuma buttons- I am not sure my mother ever used them- Perhaps instead of a special outfit- She simply enjoyed looking at them- I just think it is time for someone who collects and appreciates buttons to have them- These will be individually wrapped and placed in a protective box in a padded envelope- or mailed in a small box depending on which manner I think is the safest for them to travel- Been meaning to add that though we quit smoking a million years ago- we do have cats- So there will be no ashes in my wrappings but there may tend to be a cat hair or two- There are several books available on open salts and most of them are sold on eBay- 5000 OPEN SALTS A COLLECTORS GUIDE by William Heacock and Patricia Johnson- THE OPEN SALT COMPENDIUM by Sandra Jzyk and Nina Robertson- A set of ten books by Allan B and Helen B Smith and T

Size range: Approx. 3/8" to 1 1/2" About 90% of the antique buttons in this lot are 19th century. I stopped counting at 80. I would say about 40-percent have rust or some other issue. Such as a bent shank, but may possibly clean up. One beautiful button is missing a cut steel. Some buttons I would normally throw out, but since they all came from the same collection, I left it intact. I will warn you, though, they are dirty. These buttons are really beautiful and are in great condition.They are the first three of the medium sized buttons. I will be putting up for auction over the next few months. I have purchased a large button collection from a friend who is 86 years old. She stopped collecting decades ago. She collected for 35 years and took good care of the buttons as much as possible. This is an assortment of small buttons the smallest measuring around 3/8" The largest approximately 3/4" They all are very unique and have steel studs, some look 3 dimensional, theres one small one that has blue studs. They are all in great condition I think. There is one Paris button, it is the one with three small studs on a flower branch and rose tones and two levels. We continue offering items from a consignment that have been in a Southwestern New Hampshire family for years. As we have now discovered, back into the first half of the 19th century. My consignor explains; To the best of my knowledge my family were primarily farmers in Dublin. NH. There were several generations living on the farms at the same time. Farm income was supplemented by various means. Hiriam Carey was the Dublin carriage driver for Mark Twain and my Grandmother was a seamstress who also made costumes for the likes of Amelia Earhart and Joseph Linden Smith during their stays in Dublin. Though there may not have been a lot of money to purchase luxuries' or non essential items sometimes the family was given small things for either payment or in appreciation. My mother and grandmother were founders of a local button club and since ... moremy grandmother was a seamstress who made costumes for the Dublin Art Colony plays many of their special collected buttons were remnants of other peoples' purchases. Both have very nice detail in the berries and leaves and would be a nice addition to your collection or to use on clothing or accessories. The loops are in very good condition.
